'Clean water is secret ingredient of Guernsey oysters'
Guernsey Sea Farms' co-founder Mark Dravers said the "blue economy" - sustainable marine businesses - had become "very fashionable" and had contributed to farm gaining millions of customers around the world.
The farm, based in a disused quarry in northern Guernsey, produces juvenile oysters which are then grown to full size once shipped.
He said the island's clean water is "really important" for achieving paperwork to certify exports as disease-free, which is a "unique selling point".
Co-founder Penny Dravers said the farm shipped "tens of millions of oysters" around the world, including to Canada and Peru.
"People often confuse us with Herm oysters," Mrs Dravers said, "but in fact we don't produce the final product... the oyster that you'll get at a restaurant."
When they send shipments to places such as South Africa, they can have a million oysters in a single polystyrene box, weighing about 10 kilos.
"We'll have a million there and that could be worth £10,000," Mr Dravers said.
The couple believe the reason customers buy from them is because of "the reputation of Guernsey waters".
Mrs Dravers said the farm had strict biosecurity procedures in place to protect the water quality and oysters.
Visitors have to go through a detailed biosecurity induction on arrival, as well as a "water bath that people have to walk through".
Mr Dravers said the farm did not import any oysters in order to maintain biosecurity, despite the island's waters having no native oysters.
He said they also had controls in place to protect against invasive species, such as filtered and ultraviolet treated water.
After more than 40 years in the business, the couple have started to take a more hands-off approach and hand over the reins to "the next generation", Mr Dravers said.
"We're really pleased to show people that there's something going on in Guernsey that isn't just finance," he said.

Multimillionaire investor Kevin O'Leary goes by the nickname 'Mr. Wonderful,' but he doesn't feel the need to play nice—he says being liked has nothing to do with success. In actuality, being a respected and effective business partner is most important, in order to tap into 'signal' mode and drive the best results. It's a leadership style he picked up from working with the late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs in the 1990s, who may not have been the most enjoyable to work with, but whose infectious success drew people into his orbit. CEOs take on all sorts of personas, from the benevolent leader to the cutthroat business executive. Millionaire entrepreneur Kevin O'Leary is famous for his brutally honest, intimidating aura on-screen as a Shark Tank investor—and some of that leadership style rubbed off on him from working with the late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs. 'I don't think people you work with need to be your friends,' O'Leary tells Fortune. 'They have to respect you, and you have to lead them forward on their careers, make the money, and help them achieve their goals.' O'Leary, the so-called 'Mr. Wonderful,' doesn't feel the need to play nice or sugarcoat his opinions, and it may be part of the reason why he's amassed a $400 million fortune through his business success. The serial investor made a big splash in 1999 when he sold his business SoftKey Software Products to Mattel for $4.2 billion, just after working with Jobs on developing Apple's educational software. O'Leary Ventures, his venture capital firm, has also backed more than 80 startups including sustainable company Blueland—which has raked in over $100 million in lifetime sales—and $14.5 million photo printing app Groovebook. Scoring a deal with 'Mr. Wonderful' on Shark Tank and beyond is no easy venture—he's known as a quick-witted, bold, and demanding business investor. And he isn't afraid to ruffle some feathers, as he's embodied a 'founder's mindset' that prioritizes signal over noise. That means being able to get three to five of the most important things done quickly, while drowning out outside chaos and distractions. It's a leadership strategy he observed from Jobs in the 1990s, who often disregarded feelings in order to ensure his business partnerships thrived. O'Leary knows he needs to crack a few eggs to make an omlete—even if it means not being popular. 'I don't spend a lot of time on likability, I don't care about that. It seems so irrelevant. If you spend your time worrying about that, you're going to fail for sure, because you're going to miss the signal,' O'Leary continues. 'The signal is not having everybody like you—that has nothing to do with success…You can't worry about whose feelings you bruise. You've got to get it done.' Working with Jobs and leading with tough love: 'You're gonna deal with it anyways' Silicon Valley CEOs aren't known to be the most friendly or personable—and the late tech mogul Jobs was no exception to that rule. While SoftKey was working with Apple in creating new educational software, O'Leary had suggested that Jobs hear why teachers and students want from the games. But the Apple cofounder was having none of it, stating their opinions didn't matter, and that the programs would work best under Jobs' direction. 'Over time, you want to be part of that momentum, because you're on the winning team. We made a lot of money with Steve Jobs, he was right. 'You make the software, I'll deliver the market. Just go do it right.' I listened to him, and he was right.' O'Leary notes that it's more important to be respected than well-liked. His leadership strategy revolves around leading his business partners forward in their careers, making them lots of money, and helping them achieve their goals. It might require some tough love, but the most successful people he's worked with, including Jobs, aren't hung up on being enjoyable. 'I don't think that's certainly how Jobs operated, and so I don't spend a lot of time worrying about that stuff,' O'Leary says. 'I know a lot of people don't like me because I'm blunt and I tell the truth—I don't really care. It's the truth today, it's the truth next week, it's the truth in six months. You're gonna deal with it anyways.' Moments Jobs proved his success required ruling with an iron fist Jobs was well known for creating tense work environments, but after all, diamonds are made under pressure. As a perfectionist who loved to micromanage his employees, even the smallest perceived error could have resulted in a tirade. For instance, staffers on his Macintosh team were once berated for having improper spacing in the system's interface. The devil is in the details—and now there are more than 100 million Macs in use. 'It created a high-pressure environment,' Chris Neck, professor of management at Arizona State University, wrote about Jobs' intense leadership style. 'He pushed the original Mac team with impossible deadlines, often clashing with engineers but producing a revolutionary product.' Neck noted that this abrasive approach lost Apple some key talents, such as Macintosh computer designer Jef Raskin, who decided to leave the company in 1982. Even when Jobs was pursuing other projects outside of Apple, he had that same trademark intensity. Jobs was one of the three founding fathers of Pixar Animation Studios, after having purchased the group from LucasFilm in 1986. But to get iconic films like Finding Nemo and Toy Story off the page and onto movie screens worldwide, he put staffers under an intense work schedule. No one wants to be woken up to their boss calling them at 3 a.m.—but picking up the phone wasn't optional with Jobs on the other end of the line. 'He would call—especially the producers—at any time, day or night, three in the morning, you're on vacation, doesn't matter,' Pete Docter, chief creative officer at Pixar who formerly worked under Jobs, said at Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Gala this year. 'He wants to talk to you about it, you're on.' O'Leary told Fortune that he thought Jobs' leadership style was 'something else'—but he admired how he was able to command teams, keep his eye on the prize, and stay in that 'signal' mode. It's a mindset and strategy that's infectious to work with, he says. 'I'm not saying I liked him that much, but damn, I respected him. Because he had incredible execution skills—he could say, 'I'm going to get from here to there, and get it done.' He didn't give a damn who got in his way,' O'Leary reminisces. B.C. man lied to steal brothers' A&W franchise, court rules
A man who tried to steal a fast food franchise owned by his two brothers was excoriated by a B.C. Supreme Court judge, who called him 'dishonest, entitled, ungrateful and jealous.' Norman and Bradley Phaneuf sued their brother, Vern Phaneuf, for claiming 50 per cent ownership of A&W restaurants they operated in Maple Ridge and for trying to cut them out of any profits from the restaurants — all because of a paperwork error. 'The consequence of this error, if allowed to stand, is that Vern … would be entitled to receive 100 per cent of the profit which was created by Norman's and Bradley's successful entrepreneurial efforts,' the judge wrote in a decision made on Thursday. The case stems from a holding company the brothers created for several new franchise locations they were planning to open in 2010 thanks to an expansion opportunity offered by A&W. All four brothers were shareholders in the holding company. Norman and Bradley, who ran the restaurants, owned 80 per cent. They offered 10 per cent each to Vern and Terry (now deceased), in non-voting class B shares, as gifts. Vern had done accounting work for the family's previous franchises and Terry had provided loans. When the ownership documents were being amended, Norman and Bradley's shares were mistakenly listed as 'non-participating,' which means they are not entitled to profits from the restaurants, while Terry and Vern's shares were 'participating,' giving them access to dividends and sale proceeds, despite only making up 20 per cent of shares. Vern, a certified public accountant with a Bachelor's degree who works as an investment banker, drew up the paperwork. Norman and Bradley, neither of which had a post-secondary education, told the judge they did not understand or know what the terms 'participating' or 'non-participating' meant. As a result of the error, which was only discovered in 2020, Vern claimed that he and Terry owned 50 per cent each of the holding company that controlled the franchises as part of a 'de facto shareholders' agreement' that would see Norman and Bradley's shares redistributed. The judge rejected the claim as 'irrational and nonsensical.' 'It defies all logic and credulity to believe that Norman and Bradley would invest heavily and work tirelessly in businesses they had no ownership interest in,' Basran wrote, calling Vern's claim 'irrational, self-interested, and a seeming product of his imagination.' 'Vern fabricated this entire 'de facto shareholders' agreement' narrative to try to take advantage of the mistake in the articles of the companies that describes the class A shares as 'non-participating', in an attempt to benefit himself,' Basran wrote. Basran praised the evidence from Norman and Bradley as 'logical, forthright, straightforward, consistent, and coherent.' The judge had far harsher comments for Vern's testimony, noting that he 'lied repeatedly and unrelentingly,' and that 'virtually every element of his evidence lacked truth, clarity, and logic.' The judge pointed out that despite claiming he always knew how the shares were structured, Vern originally denied that he created the shareholder documents. Vern also claimed that his brothers lured him to B.C. from a partnership in a Saskatchewan accounting firm, with an offer of 25 per cent ownership of one of the franchises. The judge pointed out that in reality, Vern received a 50 per cent interest in the franchise and that he had never been a partner in the accounting firm. What happens next after union certification at Amazon warehouse in B.C.
There are fears that Amazon may pull out of its B.C. operations after a recent Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruling confirmed union certification at a Delta, B.C. warehouse. The LRB recently rejected the U.S. megacorporation's attempt to overturn a previous ruling that granted certification to workers that had signed union cards at the facility, which employs hundreds of people. That previous ruling had found that Amazon had ramped up hiring dramatically to dilute union support, in a move that was characterized as an unfair labour practice by the LRB and was heavily criticized by the Unifor union. While Amazon said it intends to further appeal the latest decision, the progress on unionization has led to fears the company may pull out of B.C. — as it did in Quebec, following the unionization of a warehouse in Laval, Que., in May 2024. Labour experts said the latest ruling is part of a long-running pattern of anti-union activity by Amazon, though much is up in the air over whether the company could pull out of B.C. entirely, given the province's labour laws. "We're certainly always concerned about that. We've reached out to the government to always strengthen the laws," Gavin McGarrigle, the Western regional director for Unifor, said of the prospect of Amazon pulling out of B.C. "We've pointed to the situation in Quebec. We're not going to put up with any of that. We're going to throw everything we have at this." An Amazon spokesperson said the company would determine its next steps after an appeal and that it did not have further comments on its future in B.C. Company historically anti-union: prof. In B.C., if more than 55 per cent of eligible workers at a facility sign union cards, union certification is granted automatically, while if the cards represent at least 45 per cent, a vote may be called instead. The LRB had previously granted Unifor certification through a rare remedial order that's used when employer misconduct compromises the integrity of a vote. It came after Amazon brought in 148 new employees between March and June 2024 — a period that overlapped with two certification attempts by Eidlin, an associate professor of sociology at McGill University, said: "The Labour [Board] basically found that Amazon had behaved in such an egregious way, in trying to prevent its workers from unionizing, that it's made any kind of fair election or certification procedure impossible." Supriya Routh, an associate professor at the University of B.C.'s Allard School of Law who studies labour and employment law, said Amazon has historically been anti-union at their workplaces. "Their union-busting activities are taken as a badge of pride," he said. "But I don't think in the Canadian context that kind of a policy, that kind of an approach, will work — because I don't think it goes well with Canadian sensitivities. "If Amazon wants to do business in Canada, which I do think they have a lot of reasons to do, they'll have to adhere to laws and the legitimate expectations of workers in Canada." What B.C.'s labour laws say Eidlin and Routh both say that B.C.'s labour laws will soon mandate that the two parties negotiate a collective agreement, or have an arbitrator impose an agreement on them. That could mean a ticking clock on when the Unifor union in Delta gets a contract, which would represent a first for a North American Amazon warehouse — but also the possibility of the company pulling out as it did in Quebec. Amazon has steadfastly maintained that its decision to pull out of that province was over cost reductions and efficiency, and it decided to use third-party carriers to provide savings for customers. Eidlin said it may be harder for Amazon to continue to serve the B.C. market if they entirely pull out of the West Coast, saying the company was able to fill the gaps in Quebec through services in Ontario, and the logistics may be more complicated in B.C. According to the professor, while there is limited legal recourse for when a private company ends its operations in a province, B.C. still had a legal framework that aims to defend the core Canadian values of allowing workers dignity and respect at work. "If that's under attack, it's something that should be defended," he said. "It's not something that should be, sort of, jettisoned in the name of competitiveness or something like that." Amazon adds value to local economy: study When Amazon announced the opening of its Delta, B.C., facility in 2018, it had estimated at the time that more than 700 jobs would be created as a result. The company's 2023 impact report stated it has 10,000 full-time and part-time employees in B.C. A paper by Evan Cunningham, a PhD economist at the University of Minnesota, looked at the expansion of Amazon warehouses across the U.S. It found that the company's entry into a metro area in that country had increased the local employment rate by one per cent and average wages by 0.7 per cent. "Actually, most of the jobs created as a result of Amazon's entry are actually not at Amazon warehouses themselves," Cunningham told CBC News. "I find significant positive spillovers across the entire labour market ... these warehouses also created opportunities within construction, within restaurants, within administrative services and also information technology." Cunningham noted, however, that Amazon's entry into an area also saw local housing prices go up, which could actually exacerbate income inequality. "Homeowners see a significant improvement in their wealth as a result of those rising home values," he said. "For renters, on the other hand, the improvements in the labour market are almost completely offset from those higher costs of living."
