Toronto Maple Leafs sign depth defenceman to new contract
A Toronto Maple Leafs depth defenceman has signed on for another year. On Tuesday, the club announced William Villeneuve has a new one-season, two-way contract. The 6-foot-2 draft choice from 2020 (122nd overall) has been a regular with the American Hockey League's Marlies for the past three seasons, averaging 50-plus games. The 23-year-old had 40 points (four goals, 36 assists) last season on the farm and was high on the list to be recalled by the Leafs in case of injury. The Sherbrooke, Que., native has 90 points in 165 career regular-season AHL games. Prior to joining the Marlies, Villeneuve racked up 153 points in 216 career regular-season QMJHL games with the Saint John Sea Dogs, a second team league all-star. On Monday the Toronto Marlies announced the signing of forward Alex Nylander to a one-year AHL contract. Maple Leafs' William Nylander named Sweden's hockey player of the year Nick Robertson and Maple Leafs avoid salary arbitration with one-year deal In 64 games with the Marlies last season, he scored 23 goals and had 44 points. He played in five games with the Leafs but did not record a point. Ontario Reign Sign Parker Berge To One-Year Extension
The Ontario Reign have re-signed defenseman Parker Berge to a one-year deal, it was announced earlier this week. A product of Edmonton, Alta., Berge split the 2024-25 season between the ECHL's Greenville Swamp Rabbits and the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. Across a combined 57 regular season games, he scored six goals and added 35 assists for 41 points. Prior to making the move to the pro game last fall, Berge played his junior hockey in the WHL for the Regina Pats and the Everett Silvertips. Over 213 career regular season games, he collected 18 goals and 82 assists for 100 points. With Berge extending with the Reign, he stands a good chance of making his AHL debut in 2025-26. A smart, skilled defender who knows how to exploit lanes in the offensive zone, Berge made his presence known in his rookie pro season and will only continue to get better.
