Scottish Maritime Museum announces international maritime concert
The Scottish Maritime Museum is "delighted" to announce that Zawisza Czarny, which is believed to be the largest male sea shanty choir from Poland and only crew of singing sailors in the world, and the all-female Glasgow-based Solo Way Ukrainian Choir will join together for an international maritime concert.
The 'Echoes from the Deep' concert will take place on Friday, June 27 at 7.30pm in the museum's glass roofed Linthouse building on Irvine Harbourside.
This is the second time that Zawisza Czarny has performed at the Scottish Maritime Museum with the generous support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh.
Once a year, 50 'singing sailors' and crew members aged 20 to 88 years of age, board the 1952 three-masted staysail schooner Zawisza Czarny and sail to European ports to promote maritime traditions by performing as sailors would have aboard the great sailing ships of old.
The choir performs classical shanties as they would have been sung whilst working on deck, with the division of vocal parts between shantyman and sailors. They also perform instrumental pieces which would have been played below deck during leisure time along with ceremonial songs and contemporary maritime folk.
As well as promoting maritime heritage and building international relationships, Zawisza Czarny commemorates important events in the history of Polish naval and civilian shipping. This year, they mark the MS Piłsudski , a Polish troop carrier lost to enemy action off the UK coast in 1939.
The Solo Way Ukrainian Choir was formed by Bozhena Yakymenko in November 2022. The choir was born from her desire to bring comfort through song to Ukrainian women who found refuge in Scotland after the Russian invasion.
Under the expert direction of Bozhena, who is a gifted bandura player and musician, the choir has quickly built a diverse and rich repertoire of over thirty songs. These range from the heartfelt melodies of traditional Ukrainian folk tunes, carrying generations of musical heritage, to vibrant contemporary hits, including popular Eurovision songs.
Today, Solo Way Ukrainian Choir is a powerful voice of resilience and hope and the group performs at charity concerts and commemorative events, using music to bridge cultures and heal hearts.

'That's not a knife': Sword-wielding man's Crocodile Dundee threat to neighbour
A man has appeared in court after he quoted from the comedy Crocodile Dundee while threatening someone with a sword. Darren Morrison's neighbour had brandished a kitchen knife at him following an altercation over noise, so he responded by fetching a replica sword from his own home. He then brandished the claymore-style weapon at the woman – itself a replica from 1986's sci-fi film Highlander – and quoted from the Paul Hogan hit, telling her: 'That's not a knife…' Morrison, 51, appeared at Tain Sheriff Court to admit a single charge of threatening behaviour in relation to the incident on July 3 of this year. Fiscal depute Adelle Gray told the court that, at around 9.30pm on that date, Morrison and his wife had been trying to put their grandchildren to bed at an address in Westford, Alness. His neighbour was 'playing her music loud' and when asked to turn it down in a Facebook message, she responded by telling them to 'f*** off'. An altercation between those at the house and the neighbour followed, during which the woman slammed doors while holding a speaker. She then grabbed a purple-handed bread knife and began to wave it, shouting: 'I'll take you all – come on then.' Morrison's wife shouted: 'She has got a knife,' prompting him to go inside his own house and grab a replica sword, which was mounted on the wall. He then returned to the garden and stated, 'That's not a knife…' brandishing the sword in her direction. Solicitor Patrick O'Dea, for Morrison, told Sheriff Mark Lindsay, that his client had been referencing Crocodile Dundee with his comment and had 'not been trying to terrify' the woman in question. Following this revelation, the sheriff questioned whether the scene appeared in the original film or its 1988 sequel, noting 'It's where he is in New York.' The famous scene appears in the first film, not the Australia-based sequel. Mr O'Dea told the court that Morrison – a 'genuine first offender' – was simply 'trying to make a ridiculous situation more ridiculous'. He said: 'He bitterly regrets reacting to the complainer's bread knife – he now reflects on it as ridiculous.' Mr O'Dea explained to the court that the 'huge weapon' wielded by his client was a replica of a prop from the 1986 Highlander movie and was not a real sword. Hearing this, Sheriff Lindsay ordered the forfeiture of the replica sword and deferred sentence on Morrison for three months to allow him to demonstrate good behaviour.

He spoke about the situation at the first of their shows in the UK this week. Last month, there was controversy after two people were seen getting cosy at one of the band's concert in the US. They were later named as Kristin Cabot and Andy Byron, who are reportedly married but not to each other. Following the gig in Boston, Massachusetts, Chris, 48, later teased that the 'kiss cam' would continue on the Music of the Spheres tour. He's since spoken about the decision to engage with audiences in that way on the world tour. As reported by HullLive, he made reference to the scandal at the first of their gigs at Craven Park in Hull on Monday. It's just one of two European cities, alongside London, that feature on Coldplay's tour schedule for this year. The reference came as he interacted with the crowd and attempted to read out signs that were held up. Footage shows Chris saying at one point whilst not performing on stage at the gig: "Thank you for letting us visit." He continues by telling fans in the audience at the venue that evening: "We're so happy to be here. And uh ... many of you have written signs. So, I'll take some time to try and read some signs. So, then we'll see what happens, okay?" As he attempts to read one of the signs, he's heard saying: "First of all 'three times in three months' [and you] were at that Boston gig." Prompting later moments later, Chris said: "Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle." According to the outlet, he later spoke again to the crowd and introduced the 'kiss cam'. Chris revealed that the band will continued to include the feature at their shows as a way of meeting some fans in the audience. He said: "We've been [stopping shows to talk to fans for] a long time and it is only recently that it became a ... yeah. So yeah, life throws you lemons and you've got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you." Last month, footage from the Gillette Stadium in Boston went viral on social media due to a moment during the 'kiss cam'. It showed the two audience members on a balcony. Addressing the pair, who appeared to be swaying to the music whilst holding hands, Chris said: "Oh look at these two!" They were also seen reacting to being broadcast on a screen. One of them quickly covered their face before turning their back to the camera, whilst the other ducked out of view. Chris went on to say: "Alright. Come on, you're okay." He appeared to then tease over their reactions, saying to the audience at the venue during the gig: "Oh what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." As the video ends, he begins to say: "I'm not quite sure." The audience were heard laughing initially as the pair hid from the camera after first being spotted cuddled up together. Fans later appeared to be cheering and even whistling as Chris teased over the situation during the gig though.
