Egypt set to increase cigarette and alcohol prices
In its general session on Sunday, the Egyptian House of Representatives approved a government-proposed bill to amend certain provisions of Law #67 of 2016 concerning the Value Added Tax (VAT).
The amendments aim to bolster the state's financial resources and enhance tax and social justice.
The bill, presented to the plenary session, includes a provision to increase the minimum and maximum prices of cigarettes by 12 percent annually for three years, starting from November 2025.
The bill also allows for the possibility of reducing this percentage based on production costs.
Furthermore, the legislation will convert the tax on alcoholic beverages from a percentage-based system to a fixed-rate system, with progressive taxes imposed based on alcohol content.
This will be accompanied by an annual increase of 15 percent for three years.
The proposed law also stipulates subjecting the services of literary agencies and certain media services to VAT, while abolishing previous tax exemptions on these services to boost state revenues.
Additionally, crude oil will be subjected to a 10 percent tax, with the cancellation of its previous tax exemption to further enhance public revenues.
The head of the Tobacco Division, Ibrahim Imbabi, told local media that the minimum price for the first tier of cigarettes has been raised to LE48, up from LE38.8.
This allows tobacco companies to increase prices up to this value. He added that the second tier's maximum price has been raised to LE69, replacing the previous LE48, with the third tier beginning at LE 69 and above.

Egypt extends condolences to Sudan following deadly gold mine collapse - Foreign Affairs
Egypt has extended its heartfelt condolences to Sudan following a tragic gold mine collapse in eastern Sudan that resulted in dozens of fatalities, according to an official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. The statement added that the Egyptian government reaffirmed its full solidarity with Sudan during this difficult time, emphasising its support for the Sudanese government and people in facing the aftermath of the disaster. Egypt also expressed the most profound sympathies to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured, read the statement. At least 11 people have been killed following the collapse of a gold mine in northeastern Sudan, local media reported on Sunday. According to the Sudanese media, the incident occurred on Saturday in the Howaid Desert, located in Nile River State. Egypt, Spain explore enhanced agricultural cooperation
Alaa Farouk, Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, met with his Spanish counterpart, Luis Planas, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, to discuss avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. The meeting is part of Egypt's broader strategy to reinforce ties with EU nations and enhance the international presence of its agricultural exports. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 6th Conference of African and European Union Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security, held at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome. The ministers focused on key issues essential for bolstering food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development. Central to the talks were water management strategies, particularly efficient usage practices, and the implementation of advanced field irrigation systems. Farouk underscored the importance of partnering with Spain to introduce cutting-edge technologies in smart agriculture and modern irrigation methods. He also highlighted opportunities for knowledge exchange across agricultural value chains and encouraged increased Spanish investment in Egypt's agri-business sector. Planas, in turn, commended the exceptional quality of Egyptian agricultural products and their rising profile in international markets. He expressed keen interest in enhancing trade in agricultural and food commodities between the two countries and extended a formal invitation to Farouk to visit Spain later this year, notably to attend a major agricultural exhibition set to take place in Madrid.
