Pace of AI revolution 'unprecedented' in human history, report finds

The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in our lives is officially unprecedented, according to the woman dubbed the "Queen of the Internet".
Mary Meeker, a venture capitalist known for her internet trend insights, released a 340-page report titled 'Trends - Artificial Intelligence,' where copious research and charts show what she characterises as the 'unprecedented' pace of change in which AI is being invested in, developed, adopted, and used.
Meeker ran capital firm Kleiner Perkins' growth practice during the 2010s, where she invested in future tech giants like Facebook, Spotify, and Canva.
A profile in Forbes credits her with predicting the rise of Apple, Google, and the digital economy with her previous trend reports.
'To say the world is changing at unprecedented rates is an understatement,' Meeker, now the co-founder of venture capital fund Bonds, writes in the new report's introduction.
One of the staggering charts of the report shows that ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI chatbot, reached 800 million users by April 2025, a couple of years after its initial launch in October 2022.
The company's revenue also skyrocketed in a similar fashion; from zero in 2022 to just under $4 billion (€3.5 billion) by 2025.
Based on user data, the rise of ChatGPT, in particular, is history's biggest 'overnight success,' nine years after the company was founded in late 2015, Meeker wrote.
"And, unlike the Internet 1.0 revolution, where technology started in the USA and steadily diffused globally - ChatGPT hit the world stage all at once growing in most global regions simultaneously," according to the report.
The report shows that ChatGPT reached 100 million global users in less than 2 months after its launch, the fastest technology to do so.
In comparison, it took Facebook 4.5 years to reach the same number of users after its launch in the early 2000s.
Meeker estimates in the report that it will take three years for a majority of households to adopt AI technology, down from the 12 years it took for households to start using desktop internet regularly.
There are various factors at play for the 'rapid and transformative' rise of AI, Meeker writes in the report.
There's general buy-in from new AI company founders and more traditional companies for AI adoption, Meeker contends, demonstrated by cash flows being "increasingly directed" towards AI "in efforts to drive growth and fend off investors".
The report notes that technology's biggest players, including NVIDIA, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and China's Baidu have all increased the mentions of AI in their corporate earnings reports to shareholders since 2022.
That, paired with a new wave of AI company founders that are "extremely aggressive" with all stages of the AI product development - from innovation, to product releases, acquisitions, cash burn, and capital raises - means that AI 'user and usage trending is ramping materially faster' than before.
The report also noted that the number of new AI models has gone up 167 percent year over year since 2020, and the size of the data sets they are using is up 260 percent in the same period.
Meeker notes that the decrease in costs to develop new models is also unprecedented.
Citing Stanford research, the report shows inference costs for those that use the tech have dropped 99 per cent over two years, even though the cost of training a model is up to $1 billion dollars (€850 million).
The pace at which competitors can match each other on the market is unparalleled. For instance, Meeker notes that NVIDIA's 2024 Blackwell GPU chip, which helps train AIs to do what users expect, has 105,000 times less energy per token than the 2014 Kepler model.
"It's a staggering leap, not just of cost reduction, but of architectural and materials innovation that is reshaping what's possible at the hardware level," she writes.
Apple showcased its latest technology at its annual developers conference on Monday, showing off a new 'Liquid Glass' software design, a solution to screen out spam texts, and demonstrated it was in no rush to bring out more artificial intelligence (AI) features.
But the latest software features will not be available for several months until iOS 26 (rebranded from iOS 19) is officially released.

At last year's conference, Apple announced a more personalised AI-powered Siri. However, this year Apple only mentioned Siri very briefly.
'As we've shared, we're continuing our work to deliver the features that make Siri even more personal,' said Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Software Engineering.
'This work needed more time to reach our high-quality bar, and we look forward to sharing more about it in the coming year'.
However, Apple did say that AI would be integrated into some products with a focus on making our lives easier.
Apple's WWDC comes just after Google unveiled AI updates at its developer conference last month. Samsung may also announce new phones in July.
'While it might seem others are leading the AI race, it is not a sought-after feature among users and there's no revenue uplift (for now),' tech analyst Paolo Pescatore told Euronews Next.
'Considering the negative perception, Apple needs to tread carefully not to frustrate and disappoint its loyal base of iPhone users'.
But he said that the latest updates provide a more coherent feel and 'Apple remains in an enviable position' given its large installed base of users.
Apple is expected to reveal its latest iPhones later this year.
Apple Watch is getting a new, AI-enhanced 'Workout Buddy' feature. The new tool analyses users' exercise and fitness data, such as pace and distance to then make personalised recommendations.
The demo showed a runner having data such as their heart rate during each kilometre and the distance they run that year at their fingertips. The feature will include other sports too.
The biggest design update is a glass-inspired aesthetic to all Apple products.
Called 'Liquid Glass' it makes icons and menus partially transparent.
Apple said it retracts light and dynamically reacts to your movement with specular highlights.
Apple announced users would soon be able to screen out new senders in its messaging app.
'Unknown senders appear in a dedicated area where you can decide if you want to mark the numbers as known, ask for more information, or delete,' said Darin Adler, a vice president at Apple.
'Until you accept, messages from unknown senders will remain silenced and won't appear as notifications'.
Apple also announced that you will soon be able to create in-message polls.
The tech giant also announced that its users will soon be able to converse with people in different languages with a Live Translation feature.
'Live Translation can translate conversations on the fly. It's integrated into messages, FaceTime and phone,' said Leslie Ikemoto, an engineering director at Apple.
It will work in phone calls, even with a non-Apple responder; your words can be translated as you talk, and the translation is spoken out loud for the call recipient.
And when the person you are speaking to responds in their own language, you'll hear a spoken translation of their voice.
In messages, it automatically translates the text for you as you type and deliver while the response can be instantly translated.
On FaceTime, Apple Translate provides live captions in your preferred language.
Apple has not said how many languages it will support.
Overall, the 'subtle addition of Apple Intelligence across key services will help grow awareness and provide users with confidence to drive further engagement,' said Pescatore.
'The tight integration between hardware, software and services really stands out with this latest move'.
'It looks like Apple has done enough in what promises to be a year of transition as it further builds out its AI capabilities,' he added.

Similar posts were shared thousands of times more on X and other platforms, including Facebook, TikTok and blogs. Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was elected in March, placed the country's oil and gas industries under direct presidential control the day after her inauguration. They previously fell under the Ministry of Energy and Mines (archived here). However, the government has not announced the cancellation of any energy contracts with the United States. No announcements A keyword search for 'Namibia cancels oil and gas with the US' turned up more posts repeating the false claim, as well as articles debunking it (archived here). The posts began circulating at about the same time as claims debunked by AFP Fact Check alleging that Namibia had announced the deportation of 500 Americans. As reported by AFP in April, Nandi-Ndatiwah explained that the oil and gas sector had the potential to transform Namibia's economy within the next five years by securing energy supplies and creating jobs (archived here). 'Mining contributes 12 percent to our gross domestic product and over 50 percent of our foreign exchange earnings. Regrettably, this figure does not reflect the true potential of mining and our mineral resources,' she was quoted as saying. On May 30, 2025, her presidency responded to the viral posts by labelling them 'fake news' (archived here). Namibia's presidency reiterated this to AFP Fact Check on June 4, 2025. 'The Namibian government has not at any point cancelled any contracts with investors from the United States in the mining, oil and gas sectors,' said press secretary Alfredo Hengari. He added that 'it is not the policy of the government to cancel contracts that are binding'. A US State Department spokesperson told AFP Fact Check on June 11, 2025: 'The online claims that Namibia has cut off the United States from mining and gas are false.' Foreign investment Contrary to the claim, Namibia has become a global exploration hotspot with several international gas and oil companies actively exploring its coasts in recent years (archived here). At the start of 2025, American firm Chevron announced that it had not found commercially viable gas in Namibia's Orange Basin By April, however, the company confirmed it would continue exploration in the Walvis Basin in 2026 or 2027, where firms including TotalEnergies, Shell, and Galp have made discoveries. Similarly, British multinational Shell deemed its Namibia oil discoveries uncommercial due to high gas levels in January. However, France's TotalEnergies believes it can handle these geological challenges, but its investment decision hinges on maintaining production costs below $20 per barrel (archived here). Here are some of the highlights of this year's show gathered by AFP on the scene: - Anti-counterfeiting AI - For humans, spotting the difference between a Lacoste polo shirt and a fake sporting the brand's crocodile logo can be tricky. But French startup Vrai AI believes its artificial intelligence model can tell the two apart based on a simple photo. "AI can detect micro-mistakes" made by counterfeit manufacturers of products like off-the-rack clothes, banknotes or even anti-malarial medications, co-founder Hugo Garcia-Cotte tells AFP. "It's more reliable than humans," he adds. Lacoste has been testing the AI model since November, with customs services in countries like Cameroon and Senegal also taking an interest. Robotic telemedicine Scooting around on castor wheels, column-shaped robots from Hong Kong firm Robocore can serve as mobile advertising billboards -- but for now are mostly deployed for medical purposes in hospitals and retirement homes. "We are in about 200 elderly homes in the United States, 1,000 elderly homes in Hong Kong, and we are in a lot of hospitals as well," boss Long Hei Roy Lim tells AFP. The robots, each a few feet high, use AI to navigate environments autonomously, including taking the lift. They can also analyse patients' medical data and have conversations powered by chatbots from American developer OpenAI or Chinese competitor DeepSeek. Robocore says its robots can save time for health workers, whose workload is cut to simply checking up on what the robots have distributed to patients -- hopefully limiting the impact of doctor shortages. With 50,000 units deployed across 33 countries, Robocore was hoping to expand into new markets thanks to its attendance at Vivatech. Nimble electric vehicles At just 79 centimetres (two and half feet) wide and 2.4 metres (seven and a half feet) long, French startup Aemotion's four-wheeled electric vehicle is designed to weave through traffic, saving commuters time spent in jams. Built in central France, the black transport that's not quite a motor scooter nor really a car is fully enclosed and can carry two people at up to 115 kilometres per hour (70 mph). "We aim to sell 5,000 of these a year within five years," company chief Alexandre Lagrange told AFP at the company's stand, where he is showing off the third version of Aeomotion's prototype. Pre-orders are already open for the vehicle, with the company aiming to get road licensing early next year, with a price tag of 20,000 euros ($23,000). The first drivers will get their hands on one in late 2026 or early 2027, co-founder Alain Dublin said. Smart shoes Imagine being guided on a walk around busy city streets not by brightly-coloured signs and traffic lights, but by vibrations in your feet. That's the promise of Japanese start-up Ashirase, which has developed a vibrating tool that slips into shoes aimed at making life easier for visually impaired people. 'We use AI for accurate positioning, by mixing the sensor data from the Ashirase device and location data from (a) smartphone,' development chief Ryohei Tokuda said. Users simply have to select a destination in the accompanying app and the buzzing inserts will let them know when to turn. Backed by carmaker Honda, Ashirase's smart shoe upgrades are already on sale in Japan. It hopes to bring them to Europe starting with a launch in Germany in September.

Number of women in top jobs drops third year in row, WEF report says

The number of women hired to senior leadership positions has slowed for a third consecutive year, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report published on Thursday. The report, which covers 148 economies, says that despite women representing 41.2% of the global workforce, only 28.8% of them reach senior leadership roles. Between 2015 and 2024, the share of women in top management rose from 25.7% to 28.1%, but progress has slowed post-2022. "In many sectors, top-level gains are outpacing mid-level promotions, risking the sustainability of balanced talent pipelines. As cross-industry experience rises, particularly among women, nonlinear career paths are becoming more common," the report added. Overall, the global gender gap has narrowed to 68.8%, the most significant improvement since the COVID-19 pandemic. But even at this rate, full parity is still 123 years away, the data suggested. Iceland maintains its position as the world's most gender-equal economy for the 16th year in a row, with 92.6% of its gender gap closed. Finland (87.9%), Norway (86.3%), the UK (83.8%) and New Zealand (82.7%) are also in the top five. Saadia Zahidi, a Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, said that "economies that have made decisive progress towards parity are positioning themselves for stronger, more innovative and more resilient economic progress." According to data fed into the report by global job website LinkedIn, which has 1 billion members, shutting women out of leadership roles has economic consequences. At the same time, AI is reshaping the world of work and is demanding new skills from business leaders. LinkedIn data suggests that women are 20% more likely to have varied careers, where they develop skills that mean they are now uniquely positioned to navigate, and lead in, the AI economy. Sue Duke, Global Head of Public Policy at LinkedIn, said: "As the global economy is transformed, especially by AI, women must be empowered to deploy the skills and expertise they've developed over the course of their flexible careers." Ukraine and Russia carried out another exchange of prisoners of war on Thursday, based on the Istanbul deal of 2 June. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the latest swap focused on "severely wounded and seriously ill warriors." Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of the POW issued a statement, saying "this is part of a major exchange that continues in phases." "These soldiers require urgent medical care and will receive full assistance, including psychological rehabilitation and financial compensation for their time in captivity," the coordination HQ said. Kyiv is not revealing how many Ukrainian defenders have been exchanged at each stage. Ukrainian authorities are expected to release this information once the exchange is completed. Kyiv announced that many of the severely injured soldiers who had returned home on Thursday had served in combat operations across Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Some of the returned soldiers have been considered "missing" while many have been in Russian captivity for over three years. Kyiv and Moscow have been carrying out prisoner-of-war swaps for the last couple of days. During the Istanbul talks, the sides have agreed to exchange young soldiers under 25 and the severely injured and sick POWs. They have also agreed to repatriate the bodies of the soldiers. On Wednesday, Ukraine said it brought back the bodies of 1,212 fallen defenders. The repatriation was carried out through a coordinated effort involving the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry, the Ombudsman's Office, the State Emergency Service, and other national security and defence institutions. The International Committee of the Red Cross also supported the operation. Officials emphasised that investigative and forensic teams from the Interior Ministry and the Health Ministry are working to identify the bodies in the shortest possible time. Vladimir Medinsky, aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Russian delegation at the Istanbul talks, claimed that Ukraine released the remains of 27 Russian service members. The Ukrainian side did not disclose how many Russian bodies were handed over to Moscow. After the meeting in Turkey on 2 June, Medinsky said that Russia would transfer 6,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and officers.
