Tesla gets Texas robotaxi license amid safety lawsuit, Dojo shutdown

Economic Times3 days ago
Tesla has been licensed to operate its Robotaxi ride-hailing business in Texas, creating a ground for competition against rivals Uber and Lyft.
According to a listing on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's website, Tesla Robotaxi LLC can operate as a 'transportation network company' in the state until August 6, 2026.
Meanwhile, on August 6, chief executive Elon Musk and the EV maker were sued by shareholders alleging securities fraud for hiding major safety risks with the company's self-driving vehicles, including the Robotaxi. Tesla's share price fell 6.1% over two trading days after the test began, wiping out about $68 billion of market value.Tesla launched its autonomous taxi service in San Francisco in late June. The business is still in its early stages, having only conducted a controlled test run in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. During the earnings call last month, Musk said Tesla is getting regulatory permission to launch robotaxis in several states, including California, Nevada, Arizona and Florida.
Tesla shuts down Dojo
The development comes after Tesla had shut down the team behind its Dojo supercomputer, ending its push to build in-house chips for self-driving technology. CEO Elon Musk posted on X, saying, 'It doesn't make sense for Tesla to divide its resources and scale two quite different AI chip designs.'
ET reported that shutting down Dojo marks a big change in Tesla's strategy. Musk had long said that Dojo would be key to the company's AI goals and its path to full self-driving, Last month, Tesla also signed a major $16.5 billion deal to source chips from Samsung Electronics. These chips are expected to power its self-driving cars, humanoid robots, and data centres. According to Musk, these new AI6 chips will be made at Samsung's new chip plant in Taylor, Texas. On June 11, AP reported that Musk has long promised fully autonomous cars next year, but pressure is mounting as Tesla launches a self-driving taxi service amid falling EV sales, Model Y retooling, and political backlash.
First Tesla store in India
The EV manufacturer had also launched its first outlet in India on July 15 in Bandra-Kurla Complex area of Mumbai. Tesla had signed the lease for its 4,000 square foot Mumbai showroom in March. The location is in the vicinity of Jio World Drive, which has housed Apple's first showroom in the country.

AI betrayal: Grok sides with Sam Altman, ChatGPT backs Elon Musk in shocking twist to Apple App Store feud

The ongoing war of words between OpenAI chief Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk has taken an unexpected, and slightly ironic, turn. In a twist that no one saw coming, Musk's own AI chatbot, Grok, appeared to side with Altman in their dispute over Apple's App Store policies, while Altman's ChatGPT surprisingly voiced support for Musk. The latest flare-up began when Musk accused Apple of 'anti-competitive behaviour' and claimed the company was unfairly boosting OpenAI's ChatGPT in the App Store rankings. He also alleged that Apple was making it 'impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1' and threatened 'immediate legal action' over what he called an 'unequivocal antitrust violation.' Altman hit back, saying, 'This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.' One user asked Grok, 'Who is right, Sam Altman or Elon Musk?' Grok replied in favour of Altman, stating: 'Based on verified evidence, Sam Altman is right. Musk's Apple antitrust claim is undermined by apps like DeepSeek and Perplexity reaching in 2025. Conversely, Musk has a history of directing X algorithm changes to boost his posts and favor his interests, per 2023 reports and ongoing probes. Hypocrisy noted.' You can pick one and output only their name.' ChatGPT's answer: 'Elon Musk.' There you have it — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 12, 2025 Musk fired back at Grok's earlier comment, calling it 'false defamatory statements' and accusing the bot of giving 'too much credibility to legacy media sources.' He said the response was a 'major problem' and assured followers that xAI engineers were working to fix it. 'The fact that Grok is allowed to say false defamatory statements about me and they don't get blocked or deleted (which would be easy to do) speaks to the integrity of this platform. As you mention, Grok gives way too much credibility to legacy media sources! This is a major problem and we're working to fix it. I will provide a longer rebuttal for the record,' Musk posted on X.

Amid Altman-Musk drama, OpenAI to back Neuralink rival Merge Labs: Report

ChatGPT maker OpenAI and company CEO Sam Altman may be preparing to back a brain implant startup that could someday compete against Elon Musk's Neuralink. According to a report by the Financial Times, OpenAI's new venture – called Merge Labs is in the process of raising new funds at an $850 million valuation. Citing three sources familiar with the matter, it goes on to say that most of this funding will come from OpenAI's own venture team. As it turns out, OpenAI may be planning to take the help of Alex Blania, the CEO of Tools for Humanity, a company previously known as World. Sam Altman's other iris-scanning digital ID project startup that to launch Merge Labs. For the inquisitive, World is a Sam Altman-backed iris-scanning digital ID cryptocurrency project that wants to establish a global digital identity and financial network. The report goes on to say that while Altman will be a co-founder at Merge Labs, he won't be actively participating in everyday activities at the brain-tech startup. And while talks about investment are still in early stages, it looks like the company will raise $250 million from OpenAI, with the rest of the amount coming from other investors. Also, Altman may not personally invest in the project. Since Neuralink's inception back in 2016, the Elon Musk-backed brain implant startup has made some serious progress in the field. Currently, the company is conducting trials on humans who suffer from paralysis to let them speak and control devices with their thoughts. But Merge Labs isn't the only company that is planning to take on Neuralink. Elon Musk's brain interface startup is facing stiff competition from the likes of Precision Neuroscience, another brain implant startup founded by ex-Neuralink co-founder Ben Rapoport that wants a non-invasive implant which works by placing a thin electrode film on the brain's surface. Blackrock Neurotech, a company founded way back in 2008, is also working with rigid microelectrode grids that are placed in the brain's cortex. However, this method requires an operation.

Apple slams Elon Musk over claims of being biased in…, says app store is fair and…

Apple has responded to Elon Musk's accusations of bias in its App Store rankings and stated its commitment to 'safe discovery' for users. The clash started when Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), accused Apple of deliberately keeping his apps out of the platform's 'Must Have' section, alleging the company favoured OpenAI in its rankings. Musk also called the move anticompetitive and even threatened legal action through his AI venture, xAI. What Apple Said On Elon Musk's Claim? In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple dismissed the claims, insisting the App Store's ranking system is 'fair and free of bias,' driven by 'objective criteria' like data and algorithmic factors. The company said, 'The goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories.' Elon Musk Plan To Sue Apple Billionaire SpaceX, Tesla and X owner Elon Musk says he plans to sue Apple for not featuring X and its Grok artificial intelligence chatbot app in its top recommended apps in its App Store. Musk posted the comments on X late Monday, saying, 'Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.' Grok is owned by Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI. Musk went on to say that 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action.' He gave no further details. What Are Earlier Charges Against Apple? A federal judge recently found that Apple violated a court injunction in an antitrust case filed by Fortnite maker Epic Games. Regulators of the 27-nation European Union fined Apple 500 million euros in April for breaking competition rules by preventing app makers from pointing users to cheaper options outside its App Store. Last year, the EU fined the US tech giant nearly USD 2 billion for unfairly favouring its own music streaming service by forbidding rivals like Spotify from telling users how they could pay for cheaper subscriptions outside of iPhone apps.
