Eastern Cape launches audit of independent schools after alleged rape of girl, 7
Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade has ordered an audit of all independent schools in the province.
This after the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl at an independent school in Matatiele.
The department described the incident as a 'wake-up call' for provincial education authorities.
Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade says an audit of all independent schools in the province has begun, following the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl at an independent school in Matatiele.
The incident, believed to have taken place in October, surfaced on social media in late March, prompting Gade to write to Bergview College to revoke the school's registration certificate - an action he quickly rescinded - after the school approached the Eastern Cape High Court in Makhanda to challenge the decision.
In a media briefing at the department's Mandla Makupula Leadership Institute offices in East London on Thursday, he said the alleged rape was an 'eye-opener' for the provincial government.
'That is why we established an inter-ministerial committee led by Safety MEC (Xolile Nqatha) in the province and (Police) Minister Senzo Mchunu at national level,' Gade added.
The Eastern Cape has 309 independent schools of which the provincial education department subsidises 117.
The department's deputy director general for institutional operations and management, Thembani Mtyida, said the incident in Matatiele was a 'wake-up' call.
'We need to strengthen the monitoring systems of all operations at independent schools. The department has established multidisciplinary teams to visit each independent school for compliance.'
Mtyida added:
Our approach is to target those schools that receive [subsidies] from the department, which are 117 in total. We have completed the process of auditing them. In the next week, we will start with the next phase where the rest of the 192 [independent schools] will also be visited.
He said issues like pupils' safety, infrastructure, police compliance, curriculum implementation and staff vetting form part of the auditing process.
Gade added he still believed the decision to write to Bergview College to revoke its registration was needed at the time.
'We don't have regrets. We are still firm that we were correct. We wanted the school to take actions regarding the incident,' he said.

Free State police seek Grade 11 pupil kidnapped by ‘fake' cops
Free State police are searching for 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, who was allegedly abducted by two men impersonating police officers. The men were driving a white Toyota Hilux with blue lights and a siren when they allegedly stopped Baukudi and a family friend, Daniel Malebatso. Baukudi was allegedly separated from Malebatso, and their cellphones were later found abandoned under a bridge. Free State police have launched a manhunt for 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, who was allegedly abducted by two men who pretended to be police officers on Thursday. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane said the incident unfolded shortly after Baukudi, a Grade 11 pupil at Martie Du Plessis Special Needs School in Fichardt Park, was picked up as usual by a family friend, Daniel Malebatso. Covane said Baukudi was reportedly driving the Suzuki Ertiga when they left the school. While travelling along Vereeniging Drive in Ehrlich Park, a white Toyota Hilux GD-6 double cab fitted with blue lights and with a police siren blaring stopped them. 'Inside the Toyota Hilux, there were two unknown male persons, one wearing a police uniform and the other a blue tracksuit,' Covane said. 'According to the complainant [Malebatso], the suspects' bakkie was fitted with blue lights on the grill and what looked like a police radio inside.' Covane said the man wearing the police uniform accused Baukudi and Malebatso of being involved in drug transportation using the Suzuki Ertiga. He said the men ordered Malebatso to lead their convoy to Park Road police station, with Baukudi inside the vehicle with the men. However, during the journey on Vereeniging Drive, Malebatso lost sight of them. 'Daniel alleges that a truck went between the Suzuki he was driving and the Toyota Hilux, and he never saw it again,' Covane said. 'Daniel recalls that one of the suspects was speaking Sesotho fluently and even mentioned the name 'Thipe'.' The cellphones of both Baukudi and Malebatso were discovered abandoned under the Ferreira Road bridge. WATCH | Barefoot, injured, malnourished: Over 20 'kidnapped' men found in Centurion Police have since opened a case of kidnapping and impersonation of police officials at Park Road police station. Dangers of leaving children in hot cars and the law that protects good Samaritans
SALT LAKE CITY () — Over 1,000 children have died from being trapped in a hot car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 39 children died from heatstroke from inside a car in 2024, up 35% from 2023. Mike Ishida, Battalion Chief of the South Salt Lake Fire Department, explained it doesn't take much heat to make a car dangerous. He said, 'Even if it's 70 degrees outside, the chances that vehicle rising above our critical levels for an exposure to your kids or pets could be extreme and ultimately cause death.' The NHTSA says 52% of child deaths from being in a hot car come from being forgotten they are even there. 25% come from children finding a way to get into a car left unlocked and unattended. The third leading cause is from doing it on purpose. Ishida said leaving a small child locked inside, even for brief moments to fend for themselves, spells a lot of potential trouble. He detailed, 'We're talking toddlers and infants. The chances of them being able to help themselves are pretty much zero.' He continued, 'It's terrible as a parent thinking, you know, I'm just going to take a second to run in the store. Maybe a second turns into 10 minutes. It's not worth it.' Utah has a that can protect you from civil liability if you break into a car to free a child you think may be in danger. But, there are very key steps to follow: The person has to truly believe the child is in imminent danger, The car has to be locked and there is no other way to get into the car. Before breaking in, 911 has to be called to alert first responders. They can only use force that is necessary to free the child. No extra damage that doesn't make sense. They have to stay with the child until a first responder arrives. If one of those is not followed, the person could find themselves liable if a suit is filed. Ishida expressed the importance of calling 911 and letting first responders help.
