'DigitalNEXUS is not just a platform for discussion. It is a collaborative space for ideation, knowledge sharing, and forging partnerships,' he said.
Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of youth in shaping Sarawak's digital future, citing their strong participation throughout the event as an encouraging sign.
'Our young generation is at the forefront of this digital revolution. I am heartened by the high involvement of students, from primary schools to university level,' he said.
'We must equip them with the skills and opportunities to not only adapt to the digital age but to lead it.
'Investing in digital literacy and STEM education remains a top priority for our government.'
The inaugural DigitalNEXUS 2025, held on July 1 and 2, was organised by Unimas under the Office of the Chief Digital Officer, in collaboration with industry partners and both federal and state agencies.
The event aimed to promote knowledge sharing, networking, and innovation in digital technology, while serving as a platform for academics, students, and industry players to exchange insights and discuss key trends.

Sarawak Premier calls for spiritually-grounded, digitally-ready Muslim leaders

Abang Johari speaking at the opening ceremony of the RISEAP International Youth Leadership Training 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Saturday. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 16): Muslim leaders must be spiritually grounded and digitally empowered to meet the challenges of a fast-changing world, said the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Abang Johari. 'In an age of Artificial Intelligence, digital communication and automation, Muslims must not be left behind. We must be equipped with the tools, literacy and mindset needed to serve the ummah effectively, both on the ground and online,' he said at the opening ceremony of the RISEAP International Youth Leadership Training 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Saturday. Abang Johari, who is also the president of the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), urged the participants to embrace technology without compromising Islamic values. He emphasised that RISEAP envisions a future where traditional Islamic values are amplified through smart technology, and where da'i are empowered to lead with wisdom, integrity and purpose in both real and digital spaces. A total of 22 young participants from 14 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Samoa are attending the week-long training. The programme builds upon the International Da'i Training held earlier in Kuala Lumpur in February, co-organised by RISEAP and the International Da'wah Institute of Putrajaya (IDIPKL). It aims to strengthen capacities of emerging Muslim leaders through intensive workshops, cross-cultural engagement and field exposure. 'This training is more than learning how to speak or organise. It is about developing the heart and mind of a true leader, one who serves, who uplifts, and who walks in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad,' he added said. In his address, Abang Johari reflected on RISEAP's founding on November 11, 1980 by Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, who envisioned a platform that would unite Muslims living as minorities across the Asia-Pacific region. 'He wanted RISEAP to bring together Muslim-minority communities to pursue collective ambitions and remain fired with enthusiasm for the Islamic cause,' he said, adding that the organisation's slogan, In Service of Muslim Minorities, still resonates strongly today. He also paid tribute to the late Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who served as RISEAP president from 1988 until 2023 and helped shape the direction of the movement with his passion for youth empowerment and institutional development. With 52 member organisations from 24 countries and territories, RISEAP has grown into a vital network promoting Islamic education, leadership and da'wah. Abang Johari encouraged member organisations to take ownership in designing Islamic education curricula suited to their local contexts. 'Education is central to our agenda, not just in content, but in building character and resilience among Muslim youth,' he said. He also highlighted RISEAP's commitment to reviving Islamic social finance instruments such as baitulmal and waqf, calling them essential tools in addressing poverty, supporting da'wah and sustaining long-term community development. The Sarawak Premier reiterated that the leadership training serves as more than a classroom for young da'i. It is also a space for fostering interfaith understanding, strengthening regional bonds, and preparing youth to be responsible, confident representatives of Islam. 'At RISEAP, one of our primary objectives is to demonstrate our willingness to collaborate with other communities for the advancement of society,' he said.

SIBU (Aug 16): The younger generation must continuously improve their knowledge and skills so they can remain competitive in an open economy, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said more business opportunities and quality jobs are being created, especially with the Sarawak government's focus on green energy and open economy. 'In this context, the Sarawak government has succeeded in attracting investments through the exploration of new economic frontiers that have increased the state's revenue. 'Research and development of natural resources, including the carbon business, have created new economic sources that could potentially multiply income. 'Therefore, the younger generation must enhance their knowledge and skills to compete in an open economy. 'With the government's emphasis on the green energy sector, youths must be ready to seize the job opportunities that will be created,' he said when officiating the Sarawak Education Expo 2025 at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here today. His speech was read by State Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. On the expo, Abang Johari said it provided students with the latest information about education in Sarawak, especially since the establishment of higher learning institutions by the state government has opened up more opportunities for them to pursue both academic and skills-based studies. 'Education is now a necessity because through it, one can discover their personal potential and choose a suitable career path for the future. 'Therefore, this expo plays a role in raising awareness among children — especially in rural areas — about education opportunities at institutions under the Sarawak Foundation, and serves as a platform for the government to disseminate information and guide them to seize such opportunities,' he added. The fourth edition of the Sarawak Education Expo 2025, organised by Sarawak Foundation, aimed to attract 19,500 participants and is being held simultaneously at 30 locations statewide, with the Sibu District Education Office as the host for the launch.
