Elon Musk's Tesla Hits Mumbai Streets, Model Y Poses With Local Train
Last Updated: The EV giant, which entered India after years of negotiation with the government over tariffs and pricing, opened its first experience centre at Bandra Kurla Complex Elon Musk-owned Tesla has officially rolled into India, with the company's first showroom launched in Mumbai and the sleek Model Y already spotted sharing frame alongside the city's iconic local train. Tesla's much-anticipated India debut took a visible turn on Wednesday when the company's official X account posted a photo of the Model Y parked beside a Mumbai street, with a local train rumbling in the background. On the streets in MumbaiOrder now ➡️ — Tesla India (@Tesla_India) July 16, 2025 The EV giant, which entered India after years of negotiation with the government over tariffs and pricing, opened its first experience centre at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday. The launch was marked by the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who invited Tesla to make the state its partner for future manufacturing and R&D operations. The Model Y, Tesla's mid-sized electric SUV, is being imported as a completely built unit (CBU) from China. Prices start at Rs 59.89 lakh for the rear-wheel drive variant and Rs 67.89 lakh for the long-range version. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2025 in select cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Tesla said customers in India can customise their vehicle through its Design Studio, choosing exterior colours, interiors, and feature packages. The car boasts a range of up to 622 km on a single charge. Tesla's India plans include setting up charging infrastructure, service support, and more experience centres. Four charging stations are expected each in Mumbai and Delhi as part of the initial rollout. This India launch comes amid Tesla's global challenges, including slowing sales in Europe and China. The company is also under pressure to find new markets, and India — the world's third-largest car market — fits the bill.
