Relocation of Ambedkar Open University to A.P. brings cheer to stakeholders

The Hindu24-05-2025

The decision to relocate the headquarters of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) to Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation, has brought to the stakeholders.
The university employees working at the study centres located in Andhra Pradesh, and not received salaries since January this year, heaved a sigh of relief as their financial ordeal will end soon. The BRAOU management in Telangana had refused to certify their services since January citing lapse of the 10-year period during which Hyderabad served as the common capital of the two Telugu-speaking States as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. It had also refused to admit students from Andhra Pradesh from 2024-25 academic year stating that it was winding up its A.P. operations and leaving thousands of aspiring students in the lurch.
The BRAOU is listed in the Class X schedule of the A.P. State Reorganisation Act and the bifurcation process of the university (distribution of assets and liabilities between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the stipulated 52:48 ratio respectively), has not yet been done.
Established in August 26, 1982, as Andhra Pradesh Open University through the APOU Act, it was the country's first open university and was renamed as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University on October 26, 1991. While the government is keen on ensuring that admissions to the open university are rolled out in the academic year 2025-26, the details of how the officials plan to go about the admission process due in June, is yet to be known.
The official announcement of the proposed new headquarters of the university at Eluru was made on May 23 through GO No. 24. The university is seen as the need of the hour by students who are unable to pursue higher education through conventional institutions and intend to opt for distance education mode.
However, its proposed location at Eluru has not gone down well with many stakeholders, who feel that the university being a State-level facility, it should be established at Vijayawada.
One such demand has come from the leaders of Kula Vyatireka Porata Samithi (KVPS). The samithi's State general secretary A. Malyadri has urged the government to locate the new facility on the premises of Ambedkar Smriti Vanam in Vijayawada, as the place is centrally located and accessible to students from across the State. Besides the fact that the place is well connected, he said the partially completed buildings at Ambedkar Smriti Vanam could be utilised for the purpose.
Pointing out that the Officer on Special Duty, Velaga Joshi, who has been overseeing the university's activities from Vijayawada, should be allowed to continue working from here. Mr. Malyadri said he would write separate letters to the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, Minister for HRD and Minister for Social Welfare to consider his plea and do the needful.

Anand Mahindra's Monday Motivation: Dr G Madhavi Latha, engineer behind Chenab Rail Bridge

Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group, said the engineer behind the world's highest railway bridge – Chenab Rail Bridge, Dr G Madhavi Latha, is his Monday Motivation. Highlighting her other accomplishments, Mahindra said Dr Latha is a professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. 'An accomplished geotechnical engineer and Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, she played a pivotal role in the construction of the Chenab Railway Bridge. A commitment that she fulfilled over 17 years,' he wrote in a tweet. 'Dr. G. Madhavi Latha Garu is my Monday Motivation,' he added. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has also congratulated Dr Latha for her 17 years of dedication and sacrifice in building the bridge. 'Another Telugu daughter has made India proud! I salute Professor G. He added: 'Hailing from a small village in Andhra Pradesh, she dedicated 17 years of hard work and sacrifice to build this architectural marvel for the nation.' Dr G Madhavi Latha is a professor of civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. She worked on the project for 17 years, from 2005, shortly after joining IISc, to 2022. 'Working on this project has been an experience of a lifetime,' Latha recently said in an interview with The Indian Express. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab bridge last week. It is the world's highest railway arch bridge. The architectural marvel, Chenab Rail Bridge, is 359 metres above the river. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. The bridge will enhance connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail for the first time in history. The Vande Bharat Express train moving on the bridge takes about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing the existing travel time by two to three hours. PM Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir. This marks a major milestone in Jammu and Kashmir's railway connectivity. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. He also dedicated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation. The 272-km-long USBRL project, which includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges, was constructed with an estimated ₹ 43,780 crore.

Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu condemns journalist Krishnam Raju's remarks against women farmers

Strongly condemning the comments made by journalist V.V.R. Krishnam Raju on Amaravati and the women farmers, during a debate on a TV channel, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said in a statement that making disgraceful and vulgar remarks on them under the guise of political vendetta and media analysis was an unforgivable offence. He warned that all those who crossed all boundaries in hurting the sentiments of women as part of a malicious conspiracy against the capital would face serious consequences. 'We belong to a society that reveres the feminine as divine. This is our tradition — the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem', he observed. He expressed dismay that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) did not give up its behaviour even after the people rejected its 'toxic culture' in the 2024 elections. 'There can be no tolerance for the appalling comments that demean the women of the capital region. I strongly condemn this perverse trend being perpetuated under the cover of politics and media', he stated, while criticising the YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for not taking responsibility for the incident. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy's silence on the matter was deeply troubling as it was in his media channel that the abusive remarks were passed. The NDA government, which respects women and stands as a guardian of their self-respect, would take full responsibility to put an end to this vile culture, Mr. Naidu added.
