Sitapur encounter: UP STF guns down 2 shooters accused in journalist Raghvendra Vajpayee's murder; Rs 1 lakh bounty on each

Time of India4 days ago
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), in a joint operation with Sitapur police, gunned down two wanted criminals —Raju Tiwari and his brother Sanjay Tiwari—in an early morning encounter in the Pisawan area of Sitapur on Thursday morning.
Both were carrying a cash reward of ₹1 lakh each for information leading to their arrest.
According to Additional Director General (ADG) of STF, Amitabh Yash, the slain duo were residents of Atwa village under Misrikh police station limits and were the prime accused in the sensational murder of journalist and RTI activist Raghvendra Vajpayee.
The 36-year-old reporter, associated with a national Hindi daily, was shot dead in broad daylight on March 8 in Sitapur.
While police had arrested Shivanand Baba and two others a month after the murder, the shooters had remained at large—until Thursday's encounter.
STF officials said the shootout occurred during a targeted raid based on intelligence inputs about the movement of the absconding accused. As the joint team closed in, the suspects opened fire, prompting retaliatory action.
Both Raju and Sanjay sustained serious bullet injuries and were rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), from where they were referred to the District Hospital, Sitapur.
Doctors there declared them dead on arrival.
Additional SP of STF, Raj Kumar Mishra, said that Raju Tiwari alias Rizwan was also wanted in the 2006 murder of Sub-Inspector Parvez Ali in Lakhimpur Kheri. In that case, he had allegedly hacked the officer to death and fled with his service revolver.
His brother Sanjay Tiwari had shot and killed one Devi Sahay Shukla in 2011 in the Machhrehata police station area of Sitapur.
STF said the brothers had a long and violent criminal record spanning over two dozen cases, including murder, loot, dacoity, and illegal arms possession.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and further legal formalities are underway, officials said.

Mamata pays tribute to Khudiram Bose, slams makers of Kesari Chapter 2 film

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (August 11, 2025) paid tributes to freedom fighter Khudiram Bose on his death anniversary and criticised the makers of Hindi film Kesari Chapter 2 for allegedly misrepresenting Bengali revolutionaries. Ms. Banerjee claimed that the film wrongly named Khudiram Bose as "Khudiram Singh" and Barindra Kumar Ghosh as "Birendra Kumar" from Amritsar. The CM described Bose as "a symbol of patriotism and supreme sacrifice." "On the martyrdom day of revolutionary Khudiram Bose, I offer my respectful homage. Let me write something. Recently, in a Hindi film, revolutionary Khudiram was referred to as 'Singh.' Why are those who gave their lives for independence being insulted? Will language-terrorists now drag the name of the pioneering immortal revolutionary Khudiram as well?" she posted on X. "Our indomitable youth from Medinipur has been portrayed as a boy from Punjab. Unbearable! But we have always paid tribute to this man, a symbol of patriotism and supreme sacrifice," Ms. Banerjee added. FIR against film An FIR was registered against the producers of Kesari Chapter 2' at Bidhannagar South police station in June for allegedly misrepresenting historical facts related to freedom fighters from Bengal. The complaint accused the film of inaccurately portraying Khudiram Bose as "Singh" and describing Barindra Kumar Ghosh as "Birendra Kumar" from Amritsar. Bose Khudiram Bose, one of the country's youngest freedom fighters, was hanged on August 11, 1908, at the age of 18 for his role in the Muzaffarpur bomb case. Ms. Banerjee mentioned the State government's initiatives to preserve Khudiram Bose's legacy, including the development of his birthplace, Mahabani, and the surrounding areas through the Mahabani Development Authority. "Additionally, from installing a statue of martyr Khudiram in Mahabani to renovating the library, constructing a new spacious auditorium, a conference room, everything has been done. An open-air stage has also been built. Alongside, modern cottages have been constructed for visitors, and the historic Khudiram Park has been revitalised. The entire area has been adorned with lights," she said. She further noted that the state government had named a Metro station in Kolkata after Khudiram Bose. "Not only in his birthplace, Medinipur, but to honour this great revolutionary, we have also named a metro station in Kolkata after him. We are proud," Ms. Banerjee said.
