The astonishing election numbers Aussies don't see: 'This is a problem'

Yahoo06-05-2025

Across 7,000 polling places, the Australian Electoral Commission used 250,000 pencils, 240,000 branded vests, 80,000 ballot boxes and 5,000 rolls of tamper-proof tape. So you might be wondering what happens to all those materials now.
As most of us were watching the vote counting unfold on television, staffers were busily emptying out schools, community halls, and churches. And it might bring you some joy to read that most of the items will either be reused or recycled.
The AEC told Yahoo News the voting booths, tamper tape, vests and pencils are stored away for reuse in future elections, and voting booths are either recycled or donated to schools and charities.
But environmental experts believe Australia could be doing better when it comes to elections. Particularly major political parties like Labor, Liberal and the Greens, who all use polypropylene corflutes and soft plastic advertising signage.
RMIT Professor of Information Sciences, Lisa Given, has published a detailed plan in The Conversation about reforming Australian elections. Speaking with Yahoo News, she noted several other countries are doing a better job at running them more sustainably.
'We're lagging behind India… Its election commission has directed parties not to use single-use plastics,' she said in relation to a 2019 direction that did away with corflutes.
The AEC has shifted away from using white-coloured ballot boxes to brown cardboard which is more easily recyclable. Given believes political parties should consider following its lead with their own advertising.

When it comes to the materials used by the AEC, the problem isn't as simple as doing away with paper ballots and cardboard voting booths and going digital. Most people know that ChatGPT and Bitcoin use massive amounts of power, and running computers to count and tally votes would also be energy-intensive.
Given would like to see the AEC introduce an energy and waste reduction strategy for elections. But she believes the problem will only be truly combatted by pressure from average Australians who want to see change.
'I haven't seen a lot of change in the types of materials used between elections. I think government needs to bring in mandates, but that will likely only occur if the population says, hey, this is a problem, we need to tackle it,' she said.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong: Ballooning government debt may make bitcoin the world's reserve currency

More government debt, more potential opportunities for the crypto bulls. "One thing that is clear is that democracies around the world are having trouble getting deficit spending under control. If you study history ... once you decouple currency from hard commodities the inevitable story is they get overprinted and extended, right?" said Coinbase (COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong at the Coinbase Annual Summit in New York City on Thursday. Armstrong said it's not a coincidence that bitcoin prices are hitting records as US debt reaches all-time highs. "I want the US to remain the reserve currency status," he added. "But if the debt situation doesn't get fixed, I do think that eventually bitcoin will have to become the reserve currency for better or worse. It's not going to be the Chinese RMB because I think they have their own debt problems." Armstrong joins Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk in warning about the ramifications of rising government debt. Musk is fresh off a dust-up with President Trump on the matter, slamming the debt projected to emanate from the administration's signature "big, beautiful" tax bill. The crypto industry has seen a host of catalysts this year that have fed the bull narrative. The Trump administration has moved to create a bitcoin strategic reserve (though its framework remains TBD). Companies such as GameStop (GME) and Strategy (MSTR) have been big buyers of bitcoin to diversify their cash holdings. Trump Media & Technology (DJT) recently announced a plan to raise $2.5 billion to buy bitcoin. Stablecoin legislation is navigating its way through the government. And Circle's (CRCL) IPO was met with resounding enthusiasm. Morningstar data on 294 crypto funds revealed they hauled in more than $7 billion in net inflows in May, the highest since December. Bitcoin funds attracted net $5.5 billion and ether funds a net $890 million in May. Despite the positive news, Coinbase shares are only up 3% year to date — relatively in line with the S&P 500 (^GSPC). The company's first quarter sales fell 24% from the prior year amid a slowdown in trading activity. Analysts went on to warn of a more challenging transaction environment for the balance of the year. "We still struggle to identify the next cryptocurrency catalyst that deeply engages retail and thus powers Coinbase earnings," JPMorgan analyst Ken Worthington said in a note. Worthington rates Coinbase shares a Neutral with a $215 price target, suggesting 16% downside from current levels. Of the 30 sell-side analysts that cover Coinbase, Yahoo Finance data shows 30% rate the stock a Buy, while 535 rate it a Hold. 'First crypto president' Trump claims credit for ending Operation Choke Point 2.0

'First crypto president' Trump claims credit for ending Operation Choke Point 2.0 originally appeared on TheStreet. President Donald Trump claimed credit for ending Operation Choke Point 2.0 while speaking to the Coinbase State of Crypto Summit on June 12. Trump said he ended the Biden administration's war on crypto, and his administration unleashed American innovators to do what they do best — lead the world into new frontiers. Operation Choke Point 2.0 is a popular term within the crypto industry that refers to what the industry leaders call a covert effort by U.S. regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to insulate crypto companies from the traditional banking system. The term draws upon the original Operation Choke Point, a 2013 Department of Justice initiative during the Obama presidency that pressured banks to stop servicing "high-risk" but legal industries like gun dealers and payday lenders. The president continued: Many have called me the first crypto president, that's an honor. I really do consider that a very big honor, actually. Trump also reminded his audience that he created the first presidential working group on digital assets and appointed "pro-freedom, pro-innovation" Paul Atkins as the SEC chair. It was under the term of Gary Gensler as the SEC chair that the agency adopted an aggressive campaign against the crypto industry for alleged securities violations. Trump also highlighted other achievements of his administration, such as the orders to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve and the digital assets stockpile, the progress on the GENIUS ACT that deals with stablecoin regulation, and the support for USD-pegged stablecoins. The president claimed that his administration will work toward creating clear and simple market frameworks so that the U.S. dominates the future of crypto and Bitcoin. Notably, the Trump family itself is involved with several crypto projects, such as meme coins, the USD1 stablecoin, World Liberty Financial, Bitcoin mining, and crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Trump-linked stablecoin lands on the project launched by his wealthiest VIP guest

Trump-linked stablecoin lands on the project launched by his wealthiest VIP guest originally appeared on TheStreet. Justin Sun, the Chinese-born billionaire founder of the TRON blockchain, revealed on X on 11 June that the first USD1 stablecoin has officially been minted on TRON. Sun called the development as: "a small step for USD1, a giant leap for stablecoins!" A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency that, unlike usually volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, aims to maintain a stable value. Pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, USD1 is a stablecoin launched by World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance (DeFi) project linked to the Trump family. While President Donald Trump himself acts as the chief crypto advocate at the project, his sons Donald Jr., Eric, and Barron act as its ambassadors. The family holds a 60% stake in the project. Notably, TRON founder Justin Sun was the wealthiest guest at the private dinner gala hosted by Trump for the top 220 holders of the TRUMP meme coin on May 22. Sun bought TRUMP coins worth $19 million to make it to the VIP event. As previously reported, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had sued Sun in March 2023 for allegedly selling unregistered securities. After Trump won the presidential election in November 2024, Sun invested $30 million into the World Liberty Financial. Thereafter, the SEC, Tron, and Sun jointly urged the court in February 2025 to stop the proceedings. As per DeFiLlama, the stablecoin market is worth $251 billion, and USD1 accounts for a mere 0.0086% share. Besides USD1 and the eponymous meme coins, the Trump family is also engaged with other crypto ventures, such as Bitcoin mining and crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
