aipur: From dreaming of joining the NDA to securing All India Rank 14 in NEET-UG, it's been a rollercoaster ride for Jaipur's Somya Sharma who set out to fulfil his parents' dream.
Somya's preparation started in Class 11, riddled with doubts and apprehensions about cracking the exam.
"I was interested in Mathematics until Class 10 and wanted to get into the NDA, but my parents wanted me to become a doctor. So, I chose NEET because I could get an opportunity to study at the Armed Forces Medical College. But now that I have such a good rank, AIIMS Delhi is my aim," said Somya.
Preparing for the exam for the past two years and getting less marks in tests sometimes affected his morale, but teachers' and parents' support helped him improve.
The rank-holder strictly stayed away from social media to avoid distractions. "I knew if I made an account on social media, I would use it, so I did not make one," he said.
Somya's turning point came when he scored below-average marks in practice test. A depressed Somya locked himself in a room and did not eat or talk for a few hours. "On this, my parents called my teachers, who explained to me that tests help students understand their weaknesses and strong points," said Somya.
Another student from Jaipur, Devyansh Arora who stood 66 in NEET-UG, shared that he worked on his mistakes and did not repeat them. Devyansh kept a 'Silly Mistake Book', where he would make a note of every mistake that he made to avoid making it again.
Another student Saurav Sharma from Jaipur secured All India Rank 101.

734 Mumbai students get MBBS seats in first round; Latur tops state admissions with 1,203 successful candidates
Pune: In the scramble for MBBS seats across Maharashtra, Mumbai held its ground with 734 students making the cut in the first round of allotments—429 of them in govt colleges. The numbers tell a larger story. While the so-called Latur Pattern—a drill of endless model test papers and marathon study hours—once again contributed to the last cohort of those who made the cut in NEET, Mumbai emerged as the city with the fourth-highest tally, after Latur, Nanded and Pune. Of the 8,138 students who secured seats in the first round across Maharashtra, the highest—1,203 students—hail from Latur district. Nanded came second with 936 students. Both Marathwada districts bagged 24% of the total seats between them. Pune, with 873 seats, and Mumbai, with 734, followed the top two districts in the first round. Unlike other districts, where board exam results are prioritised, schools and junior colleges in Latur and Nanded begin structured preparation for NEET and JEE from as early as Class 8. There are 8,138 seats as per the CET data for 64 govt and private medical colleges in Maharashtra. Latur-based medical consultant Sachin Bangad told TOI on Thursday, "The focus is always on preparation of students for medical or engineering seats in all colleges here. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The Latur Pattern's success in the last few years has also attracted students from all over Maharashtra. They come to Latur, Beed, and adjoining areas for preparation of these entrance exams. " Colleges in these districts have been consistently posting high numbers in MBBS admissions. This year, 37 students from Rajarshi Shahu College in Latur made it to AIIMS and other top medical institutes in the country. Principal Mahadev Gavhane, said, "The systematic approach, backed by long study hours, rigorous tests, and mentoring, have created what many describe as a 'factory of toppers'. This system has been going on for the past few years, and the results are evident. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Urs-e-Ala Hazrat: Tree plantation, free surgeries and edu for poor mark Bareilly Urs
In a way ahead of tradition, the Urs-e-Ala Hazrat observance in Bareilly this year was not limited to religious gatherings but transformed into a large-scale community welfare programme. Spearheaded by social activist and awardee Farmaan Hasan Khan, the initiative integrated environmental conservation, healthcare, and education into the annual commemoration of Imam Ahmad Raza Khan at the Dargah Ala Hazrat. Celebrations at Urs-e-Ala Hazrat in Bareilly (HT Photo) Held on August 20, the programme included the planting of 107 trees, free surgical procedures for 107 patients from economically weaker sections, and free education for 107 students preparing for NEET and Classes 6 to 12. 'An Urs is not just a religious occasion, it is also an opportunity to serve humanity,' Khan said, explaining the philosophy behind the initiative. The event was organised by the Aala Hazrat Huzur Tajushshariah Welfare Society, founded by Khan, in collaboration with doctors, educators, and voluntary groups from across India. Their combined efforts ensured that the programme delivered tangible benefits to the community rather than remaining a symbolic gesture.
