A group of activists in Manipur has called for a statewide shutdown on Friday to protest the alleged custodial death of a 27-year-old man earlier this month, PTI reported.
The man, Khoisnam Sanajaoba, was arrested in Imphal East district on March 31 on allegations of being associated with banned outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba). He died on April 13, reportedly while in judicial custody, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, India Today NE reported.
Sanajaoba had been admitted to the medical institute earlier on the same day. He had been remanded to the Manipur Central Jail in Sajiwa on April 10.
A joint action committee formed to seek justice for Sanajaoba claimed that he was in fact a 'village volunteer', and sought an impartial investigation into his death. The members of the committee hail from the same area as him – Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai in Imphal.
The term 'village volunteers' has been used for armed civilians guarding villages since an ethnic conflict broke out between the state's Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023.
The joint action committee has also demanded that Sanajaoba's family be given adequate compensation, his next of kin be given a government job, and the post-mortem report and the raw video footage of the examination be made public.
Manipur has been mired in ethnic conflict between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar communities that broke out in May 2023 and has since left at least 258 dead and displaced more than 59,000.
President's Rule was imposed in February this year after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
Between April 19 and April 21, the Manipur Police arrested at least 18 alleged members of several banned outfits, including the Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba), in the state.

Omar Abdullah NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday brought up the issue of the restoration of statehood to the Union territory, at the flagging-off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and the pilgrim town of Katra. "If you see, by the blessings of Mata (Vaishno Devi), lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha has got a promotion and I had a demotion. I was chief minister of a state and now I of the Union territory. However, I believe that it will not take long to rectify it .... Jammu and Kashmir will again get the statehood under your (PM Modi's) watch only," Abdullah said, according to news agency PTI. The erstwhile state was reorganised into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The National Conference vice-president had a previous stint as chief minister when Jammu and Kashmir was a state, and is the first chief minister of the now-Union territory. Abdullah, who shared the stage with PM Modi, Union minister Jeetendra Singh and LG Sinha, also recalled the inauguration of the Katra railway station, an event which was attended by the same set of people. "There are four persons on this stage who were present at the inauguration of the Katra railway station (in 2014). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like MBA in Business Analytics For Working Professionals. Their plan was to bring rail from Uri, along the banks of Jhelum, to connect with the country. What the British could not achieve has happened at your (PM Modi's) hands and Kashmir has been connected to the rest of the country," he added.

Mithi River Desilting Scam: ED arrives at Dino Morea's residence; evidence seized during raids to be used to identify beneficiaries Rs 65 crore fraud

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted raids at the residential premises of actor Dino Morea in Mumbai. The agency also conducted sweeps at multiple locations in Maharashtra and Kerala, as part of a money laundering probe linked to the alleged Rs 65 crore Mithi river desilting scam. Official sources confirmed to PTI that the searches spanned more than 15 premises, covering the homes and offices of Morea, his brother, several contractors, and others suspected to be connected to the case. The investigation is being carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Mumbai Police 's Economic Offences Wing (EOW). According to reports, the scam centres on alleged irregularities in the desilting of the Mithi River. These came under intense scrutiny following the 2005 floods. Despite repeated efforts by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to prevent such disasters through desilting contracts, audits by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and inquiries by the Anti-Corruption Bureau flagged significant discrepancies between the reported word done and the actual work carried out at the site. Investigators state that those involved in the scam, inflated bills, falsified work logs, and systematic diversion of public funds. Tenders for specialised equipment were allegedly manipulated to benefit select suppliers. Authorities suspect that a nexus of BMC officials, private contractors, and middlemen colluded to siphon off crores through fake project reports and bogus claims. Actor Dino Morea had recently been questioned by the EOW in connection with the case. He is not among the 13 individuals named in the FIR, which includes civic officials and private contractors, but the ED is reportedly examining financial links and transactions with his name. Sources told PTI that documents and digital evidence seized during Friday's raids are likely to be key in tracing the fund flow and identifying beneficiaries of the alleged scam.
