No. 11 Arizona State now seeks something special after Big 12 title debut in unpredictable league
Kenny Dillingham, the 35-year-old coach now in his third season at his alma mater, bluntly told his Sun Devils they really didn't do anything special last year.
'The reality is there's been a lot of teams in college football who have done what we've done, who have won one year and then come back to reality,' Dillingham said. 'What would be special would be to continue to build off of that. The real challenge was how do we not become what normal teams in our situation do, which is fall back to where we've always been.'
After a CFP quarterfinal loss in double overtime to now preseason No. 1 Texas, the No. 11 Sun Devils are the highest-ranked team from the unpredictable Big 12, even after the departure of do-everything running back Cam Skattebo to the NFL. They return quarterback Sam Leavitt (2,855 yards, 24 TDs passing), the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, and receiver Jordyn Tyson (75 catches, 1,101 yards, 10 TDs) is healthy after missing the end of the last season with a collarbone injury.
The last time Arizona State was higher in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 was No. 8 in 1998, what turned into a 5-6 season.
The Big 12's other ranked teams are No. 17 Kansas State and league runner-up No. 22 Iowa State, who open against each other with a conference game in Ireland on Aug. 23, along with No. 23 Texas Tech. All return quality starting quarterbacks.
Texas Tech transformed its program with big money through the transfer portal and made the preseason poll for the first time since 2008, six years before three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a game for the Red Raiders.
Passers and a rusher make contenders
Baylor redshirt sophomore Bryson Washington (1,028 yards, 12 TDs) is the only of the Big 12's eight 1,000-yard rushers back from last season. The Bears, who won their last six regular-season games, also return quarterback Sawyer Robertson (3,335 yards, 27 TDs).
Leading passer Shedeur Sanders (4,134 yards, 37 TDs) went in the NFL draft after two seasons at Colorado, but the next eight top QBs were all coming back, including Iowa State's Rocco Becht, Texas Tech's Behren Morton and K-State's Avery Johnson. The only change was Jake Retzlaff unexpectedly leaving BYU this spring after a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit.
Three seasons after making the national title game, TCU has Josh Hoover (3,949 yards, 27 TDs) after a 9-4 season capped by four consecutive wins.
Old coaches feeling some heat
Only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz in his 27th season has been with his FBS team longer than Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Utah's Kyle Whittingham. The Big 12's stalwarts are coming off huge disappointments in their 20th seasons.
Utah was the presumptive favorite last year to be the team to make its Big 12 debut with a title, but had its first losing season (5-7, 2-7 Big 12) since 2013. Two-time Pac-12 champion quarterback Cam Rising had to 'medically retire', but dual-threat QB Devon Dampier followed new offensive coordinator Jason Beck from New Mexico.
Oklahoma State was 3-9 and didn't win a conference game, its first losing season since Gundy's 4-7 debut in 2005. And there is still plenty of uncertainty with two new coordinators and a lot of transfers.
'The changes in how we go about rebuilding, whether it's financially or roster management, have been challenging but also intriguing,' Gundy said. 'It's different than it's ever been before.'
Familiar new coaches
Scott Frost has reunited with UCF and Rich Rodriguez is back at West Virginia, but they are new coaches to the Big 12 since those schools weren't yet in the league when they were there.
'Whatever head coaching spot, it takes you six to nine months to kind of get a lay of the land,' Rodriguez said. 'Well, West Virginia took six to nine minutes. ... But, then again, there's also times of change.'
The Mountaineers are in their 14th Big 12 season. They has three consecutive 11-win seasons in the Big East from 2005-07 before Rodriguez went to Michigan.
This is UCF's third Big 12 season. Frost coached UCF's undefeated season out of the American Athletic Conference in 2017, when the Knights declared themselves national champions and he left for Nebraska.
Games to watch TCU opens 2026 in Ireland against North Carolina, but this year will be in Chapel Hill as the visitor for Bill Belichick's UNC debut on Labor Day night.
The Horned Frogs two years ago lost their season opener in coach Deion Sanders' first game with Colorado. Sanders, who was treated this summer for bladder cancer, has his first Buffs game without a son on the team Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech.
Other notable games: No. 11 Arizona State at Baylor, and No. 23 Texas Tech at Utah, Sept. 20; TCU at No. 11 Arizona State, Sept. 26; No. 17 Kansas State at Baylor, Oct. 4; No. 11 Arizona State at Utah, Oct. 11; No. 23 Texas Tech at No. 11 Arizona State, Oct. 18; No. 11 Arizona State at No. 22 Iowa State, and No. 23 Texas Tech at No. 17 Kansas State on Nov. 1; Big 12 championship game, Dec. 6.

No. 4 Clemson brings a wealth of experience, national championship aspirations
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — The Clemson Tigers have a Hall of Fame level coach in Dabo Swinney, a Heisman Trophy hopeful in quarterback Cade Klubnik and one of the most experienced teams in the country. So it's little wonder the fourth-ranked Tigers are overwhelming favorites to repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference champions. At the league media days in Charlotte, 167 of the 183 media members pegged Clemson to win its ninth ACC title in the last 11 years. Of course, the Tigers have their eye on a bigger prize — a third national title in 10 years after losing to Texas in the College Football Playoff last season. 'The guys have put the work in,' Swinney said. 'We've been around a lot of good teams, and this team has the ingredients to be a really good team, but we've got to go do the work. We can't talk about it or predict our way into it.' The Tigers return eight starters on both sides of the ball, including Klubnik, who threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns and ran for 463 yards and seven scores as a junior. He is 19-9 overall at Clemson's starting quarterback, leading the school to conference titles in 2022 and 2024. High retention rate ESPN puts Clemson's return production rate at 80%, the highest in Division I football. The only starters they lost from last season were running back Phil Mafah, tight end Jake Briningstool and offensive lineman Marcus Tate on offense, and defensive tackle Payton Page, linebacker Barrett Carter and safety R.J. Mickens on defense. Swinney likes to reminds his players that 'experience doesn't come at a discount." In other words, they have to earn it on the field. Receiver room Clemson has produced high-level receivers like DeAndre Hopkins, Tee Higgins, Mike Williams, Sammy Watkins and Hunter Renfrow. After some recent down years at the position, the Tigers look loaded at the position this year. Clemson's top returning target is Antonio Williams, who bounced back from an injury-riddled second season with a career-high 75 receptions for 904 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He also ran and threw for a touchdown. The Tigers return Bryant Welch and T.J. Moore, who became the first freshman duo in a Power Four conference since 2000 to each record at least 650 yards receiving and five TDs. Tyler Brown, the school's leading receiver in 2023 as a freshman, is back too after receiving a medical redshirt. Junior Cole Turner and FCS transfer Tristan Smith are viewed as capable starters by Swinney, too. Klubnik looks for encore season Klubnik decided to return to college for his senior season rather than enter the NFL draft, giving the Tigers a smart, reliable signal caller. While some fans wanted to run Klubnik out of town following the 2023 season during which the Tigers had their streak of 10-win seasons snapped at 12, Swinney threw his support behind him. Then came a huge junior season for Klubnik, now considered one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. Klubnik said some of his focus this offseason has been spent improving his ability to make plays on the move. '"I was good on the run last year in terms of throwing the football, but just trying to become elite and not scared to make any throw," Klubnik said. 'I want to be more explosive downfield, too." Bringing the heat The Tigers should have one of the nation's best defensive lines, led by T.J. Parker. Parker had 11 sacks and 28 quarterback hurries in 2024, numbers that ranked him among the most disruptive edge defenders in the nation. Peter Woods will move back into his more natural position as a defensive tackle this season. Purdue transfer Will Heldt gives the Tigers another proven pass rusher coming off the edge, and Stephiylan Green and veteran DeMonte Capehart will bolster the run game inside. Playoff ready Playoff experience could pay dividends for the Tigers. Between conference championship games, bowl games and the college football playoff, Clemson has won at least one postseason game in 14 straight seasons, the longest active stretch in the nation. The schedule The Tigers open the season with perhaps their toughest game, hosting No. 9 LSU on Aug. 30. Clemson hosts SMU on Oct. 18 in a rematch of last year's ACC championship game,. On Oct. 4, Swinney faces off against North Carolina's Bill Belichick and North Carolina but the ACC schedule does not include Miami and Florida State is a home game. Bankruptcy case still looms large for Buccaneers rookie safety Shilo Sanders
Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie safety Shilo Sanders might be a close call to make the team's 53-man roster when the deadline comes to cut players next week. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles recently said that Sanders is a "very hungry" player but that this week would be "very important" in determining who makes the cut, including a preseason game Aug. 23 against Buffalo. In the meantime, perhaps nobody else has a bigger financial stake right now in what happens to Sanders than the man Sanders owes more than $11 million. That man is John Darjean, a former security guard at Sanders' school in Dallas when Sanders was 15 years old. Sanders, son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders, is still trying to get that debt erased in bankruptcy court after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2023. If Shilo Sanders succeeds in court, he can start over financially, free from that debt and with minimal damage to his bank account. But if Darjean succeeds in court instead, Sanders will not be discharged of his debt to him. Darjean then could pursue debt collection against him after the case is over, including by having his wages garnished with the Buccaneers, according to experts contacted by USA TODAY Sports. In that case, Darjean would want Sanders "to make as much money as possible – or at least enough to pay (Darjean's) claim,' said Angela Littwin, a law professor and bankruptcy expert at the University of Texas. Darjean therefore has a rooting interest in Sanders making the team even though the two are longtime adversaries in court. NFL teams must cut down their rosters to 53 active players on Aug. 26. A bankruptcy judge later will make the call on Sanders' $11 million debt, possibly by the end of the year. Sanders, 25, went undrafted by NFL teams in April but signed a three-year contract with Tampa Bay for nearly $3 million. Darjean declined comment on Sanders' future prospects. Why Shilo Sanders is going through bankruptcy The debt stems from an incident that happened between Sanders and Darjean in September 2015. Darjean said in court documents previously that Sanders assaulted him with his elbow and fist when he was trying to confiscate his phone at school that day in 2015, resulting in permanent and severe injuries, including ongoing pain and incontinence. Records show he had to be transported to the hospital that day and then underwent spinal surgery a few days later. Darjean sued Sanders in 2016, seeking damages for the injuries. In response, Sanders claimed self-defense and filed counterclaims. But the case dragged on during the pandemic and when it finally went to trial in 2022, Sanders didn't show up for it. In 2020, Sanders let go of his attorneys in the case, who otherwise would have notified him of the trial and could have helped him avoid the worst-case outcome that happened next. The trial went on without him and ended with a default judgment against Sanders of $11.89 million, to be paid to Darjean. Then when Darjean moved to collect on that debt in 2023, Sanders filed for bankruptcy to try to get it wiped away in a discharge. What's next in Shilo Sanders' bankruptcy case? Debtors generally file for bankruptcy to automatically 'stay' or stop debt collection against them and to discharge their debts. This is allowed under the law and sometimes is used as a tactic. But there are some circumstances in which debt is considered by law to be "nondischargeable," meaning a debtor can't erase it in bankruptcy court. Darjean cited this in two complaints he filed against Sanders in bankruptcy court as part of his effort to get paid what he's owed. One argues that Sanders omitted or concealed assets in his disclosures and therefore should be denied a discharge under the law – an accusation Sanders' attorneys denied. The other complaint argues the debt is nondischargeable because it stems from a 'willful and malicious" injury. The judge must determine in the latter case if it was a 'willful and malicious' injury and not self-defense. That judge is expected to do so after hearing witness testimony and other evidence in a mini-trial about what happened that day 10 years ago. No trial date has been set. Possible outcomes for Shilo Sanders If the judge finds credible evidence that Sanders acted in self-defense, Sanders could get the debt discharged with no further debt collection or future wage garnishments. In this scenario, Darjean would only get a small fraction of what he was owed – all from certain assets owned by Sanders before his bankruptcy filing. But if the judge determines it was not self-defense and was instead 'willful and malicious,' then he could rule the debt is nondischargeable and Sanders would be on the hook to pay the full judgment even after the bankruptcy case is over. 'Nondischargeable debt survives after the bankruptcy, so if the $11 million is deemed nondischargeable, Darjean could continue debt collection once the bankruptcy case is over and the automatic stay is lifted,' said Christopher Hampson, associate law professor and bankruptcy expert at the University of Florida. 'After the bankruptcy, Darjean could try to collect on the $11 million by serving a writ of garnishment on Sanders' employer, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, directing the Bucs to redirect a portion of Sanders' paycheck to Darjean. In that legal action, Sanders would be protected by federal law, which limits garnishment to 25% of his post-tax income.' It also could be much less than that, depending on the circumstances. State laws could help further restrict what Darjean could garnish from Sanders. What if Shilo Sanders doesn't make the cut in Tampa? He could end up on the team practice squad or he could get a chance with another team. If he doesn't pan out in the NFL, it's not clear what he would do that would pay as well as being a rising star on an active NFL roster. That's why it's in Darjean's interest for Sanders to make the team and perform well in the NFL, building wealth that he could pursue to satisfy that judgment if it's not discharged. But pursuing debt collection and trying to seize personal property to satisfy a judgment can be a cat-and-mouse game if the debtor is not willing to cooperate with the creditor. Sanders could try to thwart debt collection through legal loopholes and lawyers. 'Most people honestly don't have enough personal property to make it worth going after,' said Theresa J. Pulley Radwan, a law professor at Stetson University in Florida. 'The stuff you and I own probably isn't valuable enough to recoup a significant judgment.' It's different if the debtor is wealthy. Future success in the NFL would ensure that. Tampa Bay opens the season Sept. 7 at Atlanta. Sanders previously declined to discuss the case other than telling reporters in 2024 that "at the end of the day everybody is gonna know the truth about everything." Falcons tackle Kaleb McGary carted off the field with leg injury
In the Falcons final training camp practice, one of the team's most respected and valuable players had to be carted off the field. Right tackle Kaleb McGary, who's responsible for protecting the blindside of quarterback Michael Penix Jr, suffered a left leg injury on Wednesday. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] McGary underwent an MRI after he was carted off. The Falcons will be holding their breath that it's nothing serious. 'A starting tackle, to lose him like that in practice. You never want that stuff to happen,' McGary's teammate Billy Bowman Jr. after practice. 'Ultimately we've got his back and we're going to go out there and fight for him and hopefully he has a speedy recovery.' The Falcons drafted McGary with their first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He has started 92 of 93 games during his Atlanta career and recently signed an extension through 2027. Atlanta will play in its final preseason game on Friday against the Dallas Cowboys.
