Key roster moves Red Sox must make before trade deadline arrives on July 31st
The Boston Red Sox are in a tough spot as the MLB trade deadline on July 31, 2025, gets closer. With a 33-36 record and fourth place in the American League East, they're just 3.5 games from a wild card spot.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has big decisions to make to help the team reach the playoffs. Injuries and a weak pitching staff mean the Red Sox need to act quickly. Here's what they should do to improve their roster before it's too late.
Breslow must bolster the pitching staff to spark a playoff push
The Red Sox's pitchers have struggled this year, with Garrett Crochet doing most of the heavy lifting. Injuries to Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito have made things worse, and Tanner Houck and Walker Buehler haven't been reliable.
Adding a strong starting pitcher could steady the rotation and support Crochet. Breslow might look at someone like Sean Manaea, who can pitch a lot of innings. The bullpen also needs help, as Aroldis Chapman has been inconsistent.
A solid reliever like Ryan Helsley could secure close games.
Trading a prospect like Marcelo Mayer could bring in a top pitcher, but it's a tough call. With Roman Anthony's recent call-up showing promise, Breslow must weigh short-term wins against future plans.
FanGraphs gives Boston a 17.9% chance at a wild card, so every move matters. Smart trades now could keep the Red Sox in the playoff race.

Roman Anthony's debut adds hope, but it isn't enough alone
Roman Anthony's debut has excited Red Sox fans, with his first MLB hit and a huge 497-foot homer. He drove in two runs in a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay, showing he's ready for the majors. But one young player can't solve all the team's problems. The offense needs a right-handed hitter to support Rafael Devers and Triston Casas.

Breslow could trade Jarren Duran, who's playing well, for a slugger like Teoscar Hernandez.
The outfield, with Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu, is okay, but injuries to Masataka Yoshida show the team lacks depth. Breslow needs to add players without losing too many prospects, as Boston's farm system is strong. With just a 0.8% chance of winning the World Series, the Red Sox must act fast. Anthony is an energetic player, but the team could use some more firepower to fight a playoff position.
The Red Sox have been given very little time to rescue their season.
There have been injuries which have negatively affected the team and the pitchers have been poor. Breslow's choices at the trade deadline will decide if Boston can make a playoff push. Adding a starting pitcher and a reliever could fix the pitching problems, while a new hitter would strengthen the lineup. Roman Anthony's debut is a bright spot, but he can't do it all.
Trading players like Duran or prospects may be necessary to improve. With a tight wild-card race, every game is important. Boston's front office needs to be bold to give the team a chance. Fans want to see the Red Sox in the playoffs, and the next few weeks will show if they can make it happen. The deadline is coming, and Breslow must make the right moves.

Aaron Civale's trade request triggers sharp response from Brewers manager after bullpen role decision
Frustrated by bullpen role, Aaron Civale demands trade (Getty Images) Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale may have already reached the end of the road with the team just a year after his arrival. Frustrated by a recent demotion to the bullpen, the 30-year-old pitcher has officially requested a trade, per MLB insider Ken Rosenthal. Brewers pitcher Aaron Civale demands trade after bullpen demotion sparks major tension with management Aaron Civale's second season in Milwaukee has been marked by injury setbacks and shifting roles. After missing nearly two months with a hamstring strain, he returned in late May and made five starts, posting a 4.91 ERA over 22 innings. However, his spot in the rotation was handed over to rising prospect Jacob Misiorowski, prompting the Brewers to move Civale to a relief role—something he has never done in the regular season over his seven-year MLB career. According to Rosenthal, Milwaukee is 'exploring its options' with Civale, though no immediate trade appears on the horizon. Since joining the Brewers at last season's trade deadline in a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, Civale has appeared in just 19 games. His limited time with the team and lack of bullpen experience only add complexity to the situation. Brewers manager Pat Murphy addressed the situation candidly when asked about the veteran's trade request. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "I mean, we deal with players being unhappy all the time," Murphy said on Thursday evening. "That's their right to do and Aaron's got a great history. He's performed well for this organization. He's got a right to feel how he wants to feel, but now it's time for him to go behave. He's got to go pitch for us if we ask him to pitch for us, and I think he will. He's that type of guy and I respect him a great deal. I think he'll go pitch for us. It doesn't matter whether he likes the decision or can't be concerned with that. It's his behavior that we've gotta be concerned with and I'm confident he'll behave well." Murphy stressed that while Civale may not agree with the decision, professionalism matters most. 'He's got to go pitch for us if we ask him to pitch for us, and I think he will. He's that type of guy and I respect him a great deal,' Murphy added. 'It doesn't matter whether he likes the decision or not... we can't be concerned with that. It's his behavior that we've gotta be concerned with and I'm confident he'll behave well. ' Despite the trade request, Murphy painted Civale as a 'first-class guy' and does not expect locker room drama. With the Brewers sitting at 36–33 and third in the NL Central, the team is still very much in the playoff race. Whether Civale remains part of that push—or finds himself in a new clubhouse soon—remains to be seen. Worry mounts for Mets as ace Kodai Senga exits game with apparent hamstring injury against Nationals
Image Source: Getty Caution turned a concerned eye to the way of the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon when ace right-hander Kodai Senga exited his brilliant start against the Washington Nationals with an apparent hamstring injury. Senga had allowed a MLB-best 1.47 earned-run average before leaving, but the incident immediately following the sixth inning of a game that would lead to a 4-3 Mets win. This sweep will forever cast a pall on the otherwise strong outing. Senga will be placed on the injured list, and an MRI is scheduled for Friday to evaluate the strain, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed following the game. The play that caused concern for Kodai Senga The whole incident took place during the sixth inning of the game. CJ Abrams hit a grounder between first and second, which went off the glove of Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. Senga got up and tagged the bag after receiving Alonso's high throw. Senga seemed to stumble when he landed during the pitch, and he quickly grabbed the back of his right leg somewhere in the vicinity of the hamstring, then he fell to the ground. He was quickly surrounded by trainers, manager Carlos Mendoza, and teammates. As Senga finally exited the field on his power, limping significantly and sending a deep sigh of relief, but extreme concern through the Mets dugout and within Citi Field, some 20 minutes later. Senga's early exit ended a fantastic outing where he had allowed just one hit and one walk through 5 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five. Impact on the New York Mets' rotation and season If Senga were to miss the latter half of the season, it would deal a serious blow to a Mets rotation that has been one of the best in baseball this year. Senga had been throwing like an actual Cy Young candidate, striking out hitters with his devastating "ghost fork" and elite command, all throughout the 13 starts. This injury also raises red flags regarding Senga's health and fitness, as he was sidelined for nearly his entire 2024 regular season after suffering a shoulder capsule strain and a high-grade calf strain.
