Meta just scored a small win in its feud with Apple

Yahoo25-02-2025
Meta has been pushing lawmakers to make Apple and Google's app stores responsible for verifying age.
Several states just introduced bills that would require parental consent for teens to download apps.
Apple has squashed this attempt before, but this is a small win for Meta.
The backstory to the ongoing feud between Meta and Apple is so ancient and entrenched — like the Hatfields and McCoys, House Atreides and Harkonnen, or Katie Maloney and Tom Sandoval — that it's hard to remember all the slights and tiffs along the way.
Here's an incomplete backstory: Meta doesn't like Apple's tight-fisted control over its devices, which Meta says is preventing it from developing more features for its smart glasses. Apple's Tim Cook has publicly taken swipes at Meta over its privacy stumbles. And in January, Mark Zuckerberg went for the jugular, saying on Joe Rogan's podcast that Apple hasn't "really invented anything great in a while."
Vicious.
One front of the current battle is over who should be responsible for restricting kids and teens from accessing social media apps — something both companies argue the other should do.
Meta has published a blog post from its head of safety stating its position that the app stores — Apple and Google — should be the ones restricting app downloads for younger users. Apple has concerns this would invade privacy, and critics worry this would encroach on free speech.
And it appears Meta just won a small victory.
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that nine states have introduced bills in the last two months that would require Apple and Google to take up the unwanted task:
Keeping kids safe online is a multifaceted issue with no single good, clear answer.
Lawmakers are finding themselves vexed by how to come up with solutions to a problem their constituents clearly care about. According to a 2024 Pew Report, 38% of parents said they argued with their teens about screen time, and 43% said that it was "hard" to manage their kids' phone use.
But don't count this as a total win for Meta just yet. These bills are merely introduced, not passed, and a similar bill introduced in Louisiana was eventually shut down after intense lobbying efforts by Apple.

I test headphones for a living — here are the 3 most exciting upcoming rumored headphone and earbud launches

2025 is well underway now, and we've had some big launches already. We've seen new AirPods come along, as well as Sony's flagship WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones. But there are more headphones and earbuds that are just over the horizon, rumored to be filled with revolutionary new features and specs. Some are going to arrive sooner rather than later, but they're all still in some way a mystery. We've got potential new AirPods and Sony's next pair of wireless ANC earbuds waiting for us in the future. But what is each of them going to look like, and how are they going to perform? Nothing is certain, including release date — but that doesn't stop us from getting all excited about them. Here are some of the most exciting potential headphone launches that I'm looking forward to. The AirPods Pro 3 might be coming sooner than you expect. There's Apple's September event coming up soon, and there are signs pointing towards their imminent announcement. Given that the AirPods Pro 2 are now 3 years old, a refreshed model seems incredibly likely. While no one has complete details, rumors tell us that there's plenty to look forward to: Improved ANC is almost certainly on the cards, but there are rumblings of the heart rate monitor seen the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. They're likely to get some form of a new design as well, with potentially smaller stems. There are some that would have you believe there'll be a touchscreen on the case, but there isn't any clear indication to show that's the case. And while we're pretty sure that we're going to see something at the September event, we're still not completely certain. Neither do we know the price — although we're hoping they stick at the same $249 as the previous model. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. We'll have to wait until September to see more. The AirPods Max were first released in 2020, and the only refresh they've seen was a basic upgrade that added a new USB-C port this year. Given how slow Apple has been to make even minor changes to the Max, it doesn't seem incredibly likely that the AirPods Max 2 are right around the corner. Still, there are some big rumors about what we might see when Apple decides that the time is right for the world to see some new AirPods Max. The most exciting rumor is around a new connection method (beyond Bluetooth) for those Hi-Res tunes in Apple Music. On the list of potential upgrades are a new case to replace the useless model that came with the first generation, allowing for greater protection of the headphones, and new controls with touch panels similar to Sony's touch controls. The most exciting rumor is around a new connection method (beyond Bluetooth) for those Hi-Res tunes in Apple Music. Unfortunately, there's little more to glean, and we're not totally sure about what date we can even expect an announcement. Still, I'm excited to see what Apple has in store for us with the next pair of AirPods Max. Sony's brand-new WH-1000XM6 over-ears haven't even been out a full year yet, but I'm already looking forward to its next in-ear flagships, the Sony WF-1000XM6. Now, admittedly, the WF-1000XM5s are still an excellent pair of earbuds, but they're starting to look a little old now after Bose released the QuietComfort Ultra earbuds. There's very little out there about the XM6 earbuds, although there are a couple of things we're hoping for: Better sound would be nice and increased battery life. ANC improvements to bring them up to par with the Bose competition would be good as well — but again, there's little news around what we're going to get. We're not even sure when we're going to get them, but it tends to be about a year after the release of the over-ear flagships. That means we're 8 months or so away from a potential look at the new earbuds — and I can't wait. Follow Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. Google answers our prayers, adds 10x zoom button to Pixel 10 Pro camera app

TL;DR The Google Pixel 10 Pro phones now have a 10x zoom button in the camera app. This is a long-overdue addition as Pixel Pro phones are all capable of good-quality 10x shots. This also means you no longer have to rely on the Pixel Camera app's finicky zoom slider to get to 10x. Google's Pixel Pro phones all have high-resolution 5x periscope cameras, enabling 10x shots at a lossless resolution. This capability makes these devices stand out among the best camera phones on the market. Unfortunately, the company doesn't make it easy to quickly access this zoom level, as it doesn't offer a 10x button in the camera app. Fortunately, we discovered that the Pixel 10 Pro series now offers a 10x zoom button in the camera app viewfinder. This is a long-overdue addition, coming over six months after colleague Rita El-Khoury criticized this omission. Check out our image below from a demo unit at the Made By Google event. C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Phones like the Pixel 7 Pro and newer Pro phones have 48MP 5x periscope cameras, and Google simply crops the center 12MP to produce a 10x shot. In other words, this is the furthest you can go with the periscope camera without resorting to hybrid zoom and other software-based techniques. This approach means you can often take good-quality 10x snaps in daytime conditions. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. However, the lack of a 10x zoom button felt like a missed opportunity to showcase the phones' long-range camera performance. Instead, Pixel owners had to resort to using the zoom slider, which I personally found extremely finicky and sensitive. Google's zoom slider doesn't snap to 10x, often landing on arbitrary figures like 10.5x or 9.8x. These arbitrary zoom ranges are generally worse than 10x, as they often require additional software tricks (e.g., super-resolution and image fusion) that can introduce undesirable artifacts. Rita and I aren't the only Pixel owners looking forward to a 10x zoom button, though. In a December 2024 poll, just over 70% of surveyed Android Authority readers said they wanted a 10x button in the Pixel Camera app. So this is clearly something many Pixel owners will be happy to see.
