
Dafm Funded Project Protecting Fresh Fruit and Veg From Diseases
A project in the University of Limerick (UL) that is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) is being used to assess the risk of foodborne pathogen contamination in fresh fruit and vegetable productions.
The SafeGreen project is coordinated by Professor Achim Schmalenberger, who spoke on Agriland's AgriFocus podcast this week.
The project samples apples and spinach, as well as their processing and storage environment, in collaboration with spinach and apple producers to assess potential sources of contamination.
This includes water and fertiliser sources, bird droppings, and insects, as well as dust particles from nearby livestock.
During the project, foodborne pathogens, including listeria monocytogenes, pathogenic E. coli, and salmonella enterica are monitored using cultivation dependent and independent methods.
These pathogens are responsible for a significant amount of product recalls and are among the most lethal foodborne pathogens.
Dr. Schmalenberger explained that consumption of fresh green vegetables and fruits is encouraged for health benefits under the Healthy Ireland framework, for their ability to provide consumers with vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre.
As a result, leafy vegetables consumption, including spinach, has substantially increased in Ireland and the EU. Likewise, consumption of fresh fruit has improved for the same health benefits.
Nevertheless, according to Dr. Schmalenberger, levels of consumption are still "significantly below" recommended targets of five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.
He believes that one barrier to achieving the five-a-day consumption goals is the potential contamination of the food products with hazardous bacteria.
In particular, consumption of unprocessed fruit and vegetables that are cultivated in the open environment, such as spinach and apples, pose a potential risk through contamination by foodborne pathogens.
A number of outbreaks and product recalls related to spinach and apples contaminated with listeria monocytogenes and other foodborne pathogens have highlighted these potential risks.
Dr. Schmalenberger explained that limited knowledge exists on potential sources of contamination for fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown in open fields, and that potential sources of contamination may originate from fertilisers of animal origin, such as farmyard manure.
SafeGreen is coordinated by Dr. Schmalenberger, in partnership with Teagasc Ashtown's Kaye Burgess, and University College Dublin's Enda Cummins.
The project started in 2024, and has since established and validated detection methods that are applied in a first round of testing with participating farmers.
The project is not initiating stakeholder involvements to include further growers of spinach and apple to join the testing phase.
However, Dr. Schmalenberger said that it his team are employing Living Lab principles that encourage co-innovation by stakeholders.
His team are also also drawing up a form for stakeholders to sign up, from keeping informed to actively taking part.

New veterinary medicines rules will put small independent traders out of business, minister warned
A range of veterinary medicines, currently available over the counter, will become prescription only from September 1. But agriculture minister Martin Heydon has been urged to postpone the implementation of the new regulations. Senator P J Murphy called on him in the Upper House to conduct a full and independent review of the economic and social impact before the sector is regrettably and permanently damaged. He said the move under the new Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023 would deem all antiparasitic veterinary drugs to be prescription only. These remedies are used on farms on a day-to-day basis to treat cattle for conditions such as worms, fluke and lice. Mr Murphy said the products were on the market under tight Department of Agriculture control, with experienced well-trained staff providing advice to farmers at the point of sale. According to new EU harmonised legislation, prescribing must be undertaken by veterinary practitioners, who are also permitted to sell and dispense these products. Most importantly, there is no requirement for vets to keep prescribing and dispensing separate from one another, creating a concerning conflict of interest. 'This shift is not just a regulatory update. It is an economic and structural seismic shift to the many small independent licensed traders across this country. 'According to the Central Statistics Office, Ireland's veterinary medicines market is worth approximately €400m annually. 'While €300m of this already ends up with veterinary practitioners, the remaining €100m goes to a network of small, independent merchants and co-ops found in towns and villages across rural Ireland,' he said. Mr Murphy said the Independent Licensed Merchants Association, which represents 350 of these smaller merchants countrywide, warns only 38 of its members can remain in business under these new rules. 'That is a potential loss of nearly 90% of this industry. This is a choice that is anti-competitive,' he said. He said the justification given for this change was the need to combat antimicrobial resistance and improve traceability and oversight via the national veterinary prescription system, which requires all prescriptions to be on a central controlled database. 'However, as a person who has worked my whole life in the cattle farming sector and administered these medications on thousands of occasions, I assure this House that we as farmers are not in the habit of overusing these expensive medications and do not use them when they are not necessary. Indeed, it quite on the contrary. I fear the inevitable price rise, which will result from the gifting of a monopoly on the sale of these crucial antiparasitic products, could result in their under-use, leading to severe animal welfare concerns. 'I have great fear that it could also lead to an increase in the purchasing of these medicines through black market sources,' he said. Mr Murphy said while the goals of health and EU compliance were important, implementation must reflect Irish rural reality. Without safeguards for independent merchants, this regulation risks creating a dangerous monopoly in the veterinary medicine distribution sector, he said. Fine Gael senator Mark Duffy said from discussions he had with the farming community in Co Mayo, there were serious concerns about the upcoming proposals and changes and how these threatened to monopolise the market. 'We need to have a discussion before these changes are brought into effect because it could have serious ramifications and increases in cost for farmers,' he said. Senator Sean Kyne, leader of the House, said the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act was passed in the Houses of the Oireachtas in the summer of 2023. 'That is the law we are working with. There may be some sections that are now being commenced, but the law has been agreed and passed. There were debates on those matters at the time. 'I will raise this matter again with the minister for agriculture, Deputy Heydon. Perhaps there are issues with the commencement of some of these regulations,' he said.

‘Just be in the present moment': the tyranny of western McMindfulness
Sometimes, the present moment is precisely what we need. Sometimes, it is unbearable. The present moment is not a benign psychological state of calm and tranquillity; it is to be approached with caution because it is potent with possibility and the potential to unravel our cobbled-together lives. 'Just be in the present moment,' we might say to the overstretched parent, the struggling adolescent, the commuter getting home in the dark or the junior doctor 11 hours into another Friday night working in A&E. Often this is a heartfelt and well-intended response to witnessing our fellow humans in distress; an expression of a genuine desire to offer comfort and support. However, this is not always the wisest response; it ignores what we know about the human mind, obscures the structural issues that underpin much human distress and runs the risk of victim blaming. READ MORE Like every generation before us, when faced with the inevitable challenges of being human, we seek simple solutions to complex problems. We turn to our contemporary healers seeking a balm or a quick fix for the troubled heart and mind and the exhausted body. And now, more than ever, we place our hope, perhaps too readily, in the promise of the present moment, overestimating its power and mistaking it for a cure. These minds of ours seem to have minds of their own sometimes. Racing ahead, spiralling back, caught in loops or worry and scenes we never meant to replay. There is little doubt that the human mind needs to be rescued from the rollercoaster of worry and rumination, the cycle of graphic catastrophisation we are all gripped by from time to time. However, the imperative to simply 'be in the present moment' is often a well-meant but naive response that fails to grasp the complexity of the human mind. The 'just be in the present moment' cultural obsession has taken firm root over the past two decades, emerging in part from the oversimplification of mindfulness meditation. This trend has been described as 'McMindfulness': a westernised, reductive, fast-food version of Eastern meditation practices, stripped of their ethical and moral foundations. Opens in new window ] Experienced meditators might smile at the naive expectation that one could inhabit the present at will or, indeed, remain there for prolonged periods of time. Or that 'being in the present moment' is a straightforward choice; like flipping a switch and we're suddenly in the arms of the present moment, luxuriating in contentment and calm. Worryingly, the present-moment obsession locates the source of distress firmly within the individual, overlooking the structural and systemic conditions that underlie so much human distress. In so doing, the concept of 'the present moment' is co-opted to serve an increasingly individualistic and meritocratic social narrative. The current obsession with the present moment also plays into the lucrative wellness culture we find ourselves immersed in. A wellness culture that also seeks to exist in the absence of meaningful social critique. This culture places an unsustainable burden on individual bodies and minds, demanding self-optimisation without addressing the broader conditions that cause distress. In such a culture underpinned by insatiable individualism, we find ourselves stumbling towards a new kind of exhaustion, present-moment burn out. Sometimes, the present moment is simply too much to bear. Sometimes, it's too painful. Sometimes it's overwhelming. And fundamentally, that is not a failure of will; it is simply not how the human brain works. Advances in neuroscience tell us the brain does not behave like a machine, responding to commands, and switching gears on command. It is the product of millenniums of evolution, shaped to anticipate, remember and protect. It does not yield easily to commands such as 'just relax', 'don't be worrying' or 'be in the present moment'. Our brains are primed for vigilance, to detect threats, escape danger and act fast, not linger and reflect. This immediacy and reactivity once gave our ancestors a survival advantage in a threat-ridden world. It's a 'better safe than sorry' brain in the main; reflection weighing the pros and cons comes later; survival comes first. The human brain's ability to psychologically avoid and deny the present moment is a highly evolved way of protecting ourselves from being overwhelmed. At times it might be the only option, even the wisest one, when life's harshness is unrelenting, when the forces of social and economic deprivation offer no reprieve, and when the lottery of life seems incessantly cruel. Opens in new window ] 'Just be in the present moment' can be a brutal ask that risks exposing the human heart and soul to more than they can bear. In the face of adversity, temporary emotional avoidance may be precisely what's called for. Denial, so often maligned by present-moment enthusiasts, can in fact be our ally. It can serve as an adaptive, protective and even compassionate reflex in the face of the cruelty we can encounter as we make our way through this life. The danger lies in becoming trapped in a pattern of denial: the psychological toll involved in persistent denial is considerable. A little denial can go a long way, but we get into trouble when avoidance becomes a way of life. A life lived in a continual state of denial and avoidance will blunt all of life; we risk living a life that feels hollowed out, flattened. In the present moment we are invited to bow to our smallness and insignificance, where we recognise our place in the vast web of existence, our place in the 'family of things' as the poet Mary Oliver described it. The immensity of the universe is laid bare when the present moment is encountered; this immensity slowly and softly reveals itself to us, offering an invitation to breathe deeply and live more wholeheartedly. In the presence of this moment, our interconnectedness is felt viscerally again, as if for the first time. The present moment pulls the rug from beneath us, uproots us from an anaesthetised individualism and reawakens us to the sharpness and subtlety of our shared humanity. Our long-standing ill-at-ease, out-of-sorts hen on a hot griddle eventually gives way to a bewildering vastness: sparkling with marvellousness and insignificance, tipsy on the freedom of it all. Our current cultural obsession with the present moment often obscures its radical potential, attempting to neutralise its potency. The present moment does not exist in an abeyance of our past or our imagined future. The present moment is never cut off from our past or imagined future; it is carried on the wings of memory and anticipation, rooted in what has been and lifted by what might be. The present moment, nestled quietly here, is not a refuge of sameness or shallow calm. It is the threshold where the familiar comforts of predictability begin to loosen, making space for the life that has been quietly waiting for us all along. 'People in London seem to be finding really creative ways to hurt themselves and each other'
Assisting with the surgery of a man who had suffered 'an unfortunate chainsaw attack' is just the sort of medical drama aspiring doctor Rhys Scully thrives on. 'Luckily, the story had a happy ending,' he tells the Irish Examiner. The 23-year-old has spent the last three weeks in London shadowing some of Britain's leading trauma surgeons. It's been a life-changing experience for the UCD student who says it would not have been possible without the support of his community who fundraised to make the dream a reality. Ever since childhood, Rhys says he has loved nothing more than watching Channel 4 show 24 Hours in A&E. So taken was he with the reality show, he was determined to experience Britain's busiest emergency medicine departments for himself. However, it almost didn't happen for Rhys after a shortfall of personal funds threatened to scupper his chances of accepting the offer of a placement in hospitals under the umbrella of the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. But when his mother Lynsey told her friends about Rhys's predicament, they came to the rescue. Lynsey started a GoFundMe campaign, raising a total of €6,555 for Rhys's flights, accommodation, and living costs during his placement. The medical student said he was extremely touched by the generosity of those who donated after he applied for the initiative through King's College Hospital in London. 'Some of these people have never even met me,' Rhys said. 'I am so grateful to them for giving me this opportunity. I really hope that none of them have to avail of my services in the future, but at least if they do it can be my way of giving back.' Survival is priority Rhys, who grew up in Carlow, said he has learned so much from the cases he has assisted with. "I saw a very unfortunate chainsaw attack which required a lot of work. It reaches a point where aesthetics isn't the goal anymore. The priority is survival and, after that, function. Some people come out fine, but other injuries are life-changing. "The team that I'm under specialises in plastic surgery, so they deal with putting people back together again. "I've seen some incredible surgeries including nerve repairs. These are people who, if they were anywhere else, would have to undergo amputations. You get lots of people who get into brawls and break bones as a result. The doctors don't ask questions. 'When people throw punches, they tend to fracture their hand in a specific way so doctors know what to look for. People punching walls out of anger is far more common than you think. You'd assume this is something that only happens in movies, but there are at least two surgeries in the hospital each day dealing specifically with this kind of injury "There have been people who have punched doors, windows, and walls, among other things. You see things that you never thought were possible. "To put it bluntly: People in London seem to be finding really creative ways to hurt themselves and each other. This is unfortunate, obviously, but it's also really important to see from a learning point of view. "Unfortunately, this is how medicine works because you can't know how to treat somebody if you haven't see the injury before." Rhys says that, after his placement, he is going to have a "wealth of knowledge about different injuries and creative ways of treating them when I'm back in Ireland". He also praised the team he is working under for their support and generosity. 'The same consultant who can be harsh and will lay down the law in the theatre, only to buy you lunch afterwards because this is the type of person they are. They have the patients' interests at heart in the theatre, and yours when it's all finished. "One of the best parts for me was being asked to select the music to play in the theatre for one of the procedures. That was such a big deal for me and a real honour.' Rhys Scully praised the team he is working under for their support and generosity, which includes, from left: Maleeha Mughal, Dr Ted Welman, and Dr Markos Antonopoulus. He also enjoys the atmosphere of camaraderie. In the space of 10 minutes, you can go from being head to toe in a gown covered in blood and other stuff to sitting outside with a nice latte talking about plans for the weekend And, he says, the most rewarding part of his experience was seeing the difference treatments can make to lives. 'One of the most positive things I have seen from plastic surgery is what it can do for women with breast cancer. There's something called a Diep flap, which is a type of breast reconstruction surgery that uses the patient's own tissue to rebuild the breast after a mastectomy," he says. "These are the kind of positive things I've seen from plastic surgery for breast cancer. In the past, people would have gone for a mastectomy and that would be it. Some are okay with this but, for others, it can have a huge impact on their self-esteem. For many, it's not just an aesthetic thing — it's a personality thing "This is a very personal thing for people to lose, and they suffer a lot as a result. They can reconstruct the breasts now, so they basically look like they did beforehand. It reduces a lot of psychological distress that can come with a mastectomy. "This is a new option that wasn't there before. Of course, there is also the option of implants — but it's nice to be able to use your own natural tissue as well.' Family support Rhys said his mum Lynsey has been a huge support to him throughout his placement. 'Mum has always been an inspiration to me. She was the reason I went into medicine in the first place. "We often watched 24 Hours in A&E together. She has supported me every step of the way. When I was younger, she gave me books and memoirs about doctors to read. "She wanted to make sure that I was 100% committed and was aware of the life that comes with medicine. The year I was born, she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. It meant that I was constantly coming with her to doctors appointments as a child. While a lot of people hate hospitals, I fell in love with them "I was always asking the doctors questions and watching what they were doing. I saw how they helped people bounce back. Even though I have no aspirations to be a gastroenterologist, I had that same desire to help people.'
