Why are luxury European jewellery brands flocking to Dubai?

Khaleej Times27-06-2025
From luxury designers to schools and production facilities‭, ‬Dubai is fast becoming a jewellery hub with a growing number of European brands relocating or expanding to the city in a movement that is cementing the emirate's position in the luxury market as a crossroads of East meets West‭.‬
Panos Melekkis is one of those names‭. ‬The Cypriot fine jewellery designer has been part of a family business spanning generations‭, ‬but he tells‭ ‬KT LUXE‭ ‬that Dubai was the ideal choice for his bespoke design studio‭, ‬embodying‭ ‬'the spirit of modern luxury and artistic innovation'‭.‬
‭ ‬'The city attracts a global clientele who appreciate exclusivity and craftsmanship‭, ‬making it the perfect environment to showcase‭ ‬my creations‭,‬'‭ ‬he said‭. ‬'My atelier in Dubai Design District‭ (‬D3‭) ‬is a place where artistry and craftsmanship converge‭, ‬where clients can immerse themselves in the creative process and witness the transformation of raw materials into masterpieces‭.‬'
He says that with its ease of doing business‭, ‬Dubai offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and creativity‭, ‬and D3‭, ‬in particular‭, ‬has become a hub for luxury and innovation‭.‬
'In Dubai‭, ‬I have access to a global market of high-net-worth individuals who seek exclusive‭, ‬personalised creations‭,‬'‭ ‬he explained‭.‬
‭ ‬'The city's vibrant luxury scene and advanced manufacturing capabilities allow me to experiment with cutting-edge techniques and source the rarest gemstones‭. ‬This creative freedom‭, ‬combined with the ability to cater to a diverse‭, ‬international clientele‭, ‬is what sets my Dubai operations apart from my roots in Cyprus‭.‬'
He says that in the Dubai market‭, ‬his family's bespoke designs‭, ‬high-value diamond pieces‭, ‬and rare coloured gemstones‭, ‬are particularly popular‭, ‬with clients seeking out exclusivity and personalisation‭, ‬and valuing pieces that reflect their individual tastes and tell a personal story‭.‬
But‭, ‬he admits‭, ‬Dubai has also played an influential role in his evolving direction and style‭. ‬'Cyprus‭, ‬with its rich history and Mediterranean influences‭, ‬gave me a deep respect for heritage and the timeless allure of classic design‭. ‬Dubai‭, ‬on the other hand‭, ‬has exposed me to a world of bold‭, ‬contemporary luxury‭, ‬pushing the boundaries of innovation and redefining opulence‭. ‬Together‭, ‬these influences have shaped my aesthetic‭, ‬blending the timeless elegance of European artistry with the dynamic energy of the modern Middle East‭.‬'
Sophie Claudel‭, ‬director of L'ÉCOLE‭, ‬School of Jewellery Arts‭, ‬which already has campuses in Paris‭, ‬Hong Kong and Shanghai‭, ‬says that the school's recent expansion to Dubai is‭ ‬'the natural next step'‭.‬
'We felt that Dubai combines a diverse melting pot of cultures‭, ‬it merges tradition and modernity‭, ‬and has a deep and strong history with jewellery‭, ‬so it makes perfect sense for L'ÉCOLE to be here‭,‬'‭ ‬she told‭ ‬KT LUXE‭.‬
The move coincides with last year's founding of The Dubai Business Group for Gold and Jewellery Designers‭, ‬a Dubai Chamber initiative recognising the city's growing design community and that aims to help develop local talent beyond the city's famous gold and diamond markets‭, ‬promoting Dubai as a global jewellery design hub‭.‬
The school‭, ‬which has classes for children and adults‭, ‬has seen interest not only from the community but also‭, ‬being a rare addition to the country's educational landscape‭, ‬has attracted professionals from the industry‭, ‬with programmes centred on art history‭, ‬gemology‭, ‬and craftsmanship‭.‬
'Dubai is in full expansion mode and attracts so many talents from all over the world‭. ‬It is becoming a significant cultural hub‭ ‬in the region with a growing status as a centre for design and the arts‭.‬'
She said this is having a major influence on the industry‭. ‬'This appreciation is appealing to jewellers from around the world to open their doors and share their craftsmanship and expertise‭.‬
'We are witnessing many Maisons recognising this and creating immersive experiences for the community of Dubai‭, ‬showcasing their‭ ‬exceptional history and unique jewellery creations‭. ‬For institutions like L'ÉCOLE Middle East‭, ‬this environment enables meaningful contributions to the regional creative economy and supports the long-term‭ ‬development of the jewellery sector‭.‬'

Italian firm GDM Precious Metal Refining Recovery and Recycling has also recently come to the UAE‭, ‬becoming the country's first end-to-end recovery and refining plant of precious metals‭, ‬including gold‭, ‬silver‭, ‬platinum‭, ‬palladium‭, ‬and copper‭.‬
Emanuele Esposito‭, ‬director general of Gold Metal DMCC‭, ‬said that for the company‭, ‬there are huge benefits of the expansion‭. ‬'Dubai enables a level of integration that's structurally difficult elsewhere‭. ‬Here‭, ‬recovery‭, ‬refining‭, ‬secure storage‭, ‬and precious metals trading co-exist within a unified operational framework‭ ‬—‭ ‬streamlined‭, ‬compliant‭, ‬and future-ready‭.‬
'As a refinery operating across industrial waste disposal‭, ‬electronic recovery‭, ‬and investment-grade bullion production‭, ‬we benefit from the UAE's regulatory clarity and logistical efficiency‭. ‬We're able to deliver outcomes with speed and precision that would be far more restricted in other jurisdictions‭.‬'
As a luxury destination and a destination for small business‭, ‬Dubai offers the perfect second home‭. ‬'Dubai is a global benchmark for luxury‭, ‬trust‭, ‬and innovation‭. ‬Our presence here places the company at the heart of a thriving ecosystem‭, ‬trusted by investors‭, ‬private clients‭, ‬and artisans alike‭,‬'‭ ‬Esposito said‭.‬
'In Italy and across Europe‭, ‬Dubai is regarded as the epicentre of modern luxury‭ [‬and‭] ‬‮…‬‭ ‬aligning with Dubai is a strategic move‭.‬‭ ‬It communicates that we operate to international benchmarks in a market that values both sustainability and precision‭. ‬It reinforces our identity not only as a refinery but also as a long-term partner in the global precious metals value chain‭.‬'

Wizz Air to exit Abu Dhabi: Budget flyers may see airfares go up by 50%, say travel agents

Budget airline Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has announced it will cease operations starting September 1, 2025. Travel agents warn the airline's departure could drive airfares up by more than 50 per cent, as passengers scramble for alternative low-cost options. 'If [passengers] want to divert themselves to other airlines, it'll be a huge cost, maybe more than 50 per cent,' Bharat Aidasani, managing partner at travel agency Pluto Travel, told Khaleej Times. Aidasani explained that this is because ' Wizz Air's ultra-low-cost tickets are often booked two or three months in advance. Now, travellers will face significantly higher fares with other airlines,' he said, adding that the move would erode trust among passengers who rely on early, budget-friendly bookings. 'People who are relying on low-budget carriers like Wizz Air will now have low confidence,' Aidasani said. 'When they book in advance, they feel secure in their travel plans. This kind of disruption impacts not just travel costs, but travel confidence too.' Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said in a statement on Monday it was leaving Abu Dhabi, citing a combination of supply chain constraints, geopolitical instability, and limited market access as key reasons for its withdrawal from the UAE capital. Re-booking and refunds Passengers with bookings after August 31, 2025, will be contacted by Wizz Air via email with options for refunds or alternative travel arrangements. Moreover, those who booked through third-party providers are advised to contact their travel agents. 'Re-booking costs will depend on factors like the season, availability, and specific routes,' Aidasani said. 'July and August are high travel seasons, so many had already booked for summer travel well in advance.' 'For travellers, low-cost carriers like Wizz Air are very important,' said Malou Prado, a travel agent. 'We used to get a lot of clients requesting Wizz Air because it was the cheapest option available. Even those who were traveling specifically to Abu Dhabi chose Wizz because of the price.' Despite the loss of Wizz Air, some industry professionals believe other regional players could step up to absorb the displaced demand. 'Maybe flydubai,' Prado suggested, when asked who might fill the void. 'They're more stable. Maybe there will be partnerships with flydubai, or even Etihad.' However, she acknowledged that no other airline offers the same mix of ultra-low prices and aggressive promotions that Wizz Air did.

'A blessing': UAE motorists say 'long-awaited' Emirates Road upgrade will help save time

UAE residents expressed gratitude as the country announced a Dh750-million upgrade to Emirates Road. The infrastructure development promises to transform one of the country's most congested traffic corridors. The project will focus on upgrading the critical Intersection No. 7 in Sharjah through widening roads, and the construction of six bridges. The move was met with enthusiasm from daily commuters who have long endured traffic delays on this vital route connecting the eastern, central, and northern cities to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Mohammed Al Hammadi, a Sharjah resident who travels weekly between Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, described the project as a 'blessing' that will significantly improve his commuting experience. 'I use this street and intersection frequently because I travel between Sharjah and Abu Dhabi weekly,' Al Hammadi said. 'May God reward our sheikhs and our distinguished government for this project.' Al Hammadi emphasised the strategic importance of the intersection, noting that 'it connects all the cities of the country. Those coming from the eastern, central, and northern cities pass through this intersection towards Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as towards the interior of Sharjah city.' 'The project will have a great impact on people and will bring them happiness, shorten travel time, and help save at least an hour during peak hours — morning commute and afternoon return,' he added. Residents praise infrastructure investment Abdullah Al Shaer, a resident of the Al Zubair area in Sharjah who uses the route daily, echoed similar sentiments about the project's potential benefits. 'I use the road daily, and of course it is considered the best option to reach Dubai and the capital Abu Dhabi,' Al Shaer stated. He described the upgrade as 'a positive and important step to improve traffic flow and enhance quality of life,' while expressing hopes that 'the expansion works will be according to the highest standards and implemented with the least possible impact on drivers.' Mohammed Ahmed Al Dhahoori, a member of the Advisory Council of Sharjah, expressed particular satisfaction with the project's announcement, describing it as a 'vital project that has been long awaited for years.' He noted that the project, which will begin implementation in September and continue for two years, comes after 'many continuous demands from road users, persistence, waiting, and follow-up by our wise leadership.' Al Dhahoori extended appreciation to the UAE's leadership for prioritising infrastructure development. 'I would like to express a word of thanks, appreciation, and gratitude to our wise government and to the officials and their work teams who are responsible for these vital projects that serve the country, for the great efforts they make to develop projects, care for them, and their diligent follow-up,' he stated. Meanwhile, another road user, Reem Hasan from Sharjah said "this expansion will save me a lot of time as I and my family use this road often to commute to Dubai." The Emirates Road upgrade project, announced by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represents one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region's transportation network. The 25km project will begin at the Al Badi intersection and extend to Umm Al Quwain, with construction scheduled to commence in September 2025. Key features of the project include: The project is expected to reduce travel time by 45 per cent and increase road capacity by 65 per cent, addressing one of the most persistent traffic bottlenecks in the UAE's federal road network. For many residents, the promised reduction in travel time will translate into more time with family and reduced stress from traffic congestion.
