Hit the line to miss narrowly when fresh at Scone in heavy ground before failing to run home in a deeper provincial race. Much better suited here, drawn to get to the outside of runners, and any rain is a bonus. 5. Wonderful Mistake has to get across from a wide barrier, but is primed after twice finishing a half-length from the winner at Canberra, the latest 13 days ago as a well-backed favourite. 1. Deekaygeebee is a lightly raced Victorian and over the odds after scoring a smart win here 18 days ago.

3. Riverbend Unicorn is an honest and improving local four-year-old who represents outstanding value, resuming off a four-month spell in a tricky race. Has placed five times from seven starts, draws to get a soft run inside, and fitted to run this trip out off a solid 1000m trial on the Riverside track. 5. Doc March is also trained here, and a natural improver after rushing home late to beat all bar the winner second-up, but still shapes under the odds jumping from a wide gate. 1. Dita Von is also trained on the track and hasn't missed a place in four consecutive runs, chasing home a smart one at Albury a week ago, but is also drawn wide. 9. Hot Toddy is desperate for this longer trip third-up. 11. Deebaa at her third start, and 16. Cinephile deep into the prep; can both add plenty of value into wider exotics.

It doesn't get any easier here in a wide maiden sprint, with a few key first starters on show. One of them 4. Explosive Style, a five-year-old mare by Carravaggio, makes the trip over the border and is ready to strike on debut. Careered away to win a trial on the Riverside track here a fortnight ago, and is bred for speed on both sides. 1. Brucedale is a local three-year-old by Shaft on debut in winkers off a handy trial, but draws wide. 3. Der Blaue Reiter is a lightly raced improver, and over the odds second-up coming through that same Federal Maiden in Canberra as one of the better chances in the opening race.

Race 4
7. Due Calzini is a progressive three-year-old well-placed to claim a second career win coming back in class and depth third-up. Did his best work late from the back when resuming in a BM 58 after being backed from $3.70 into $3.00 before catching the eye again running home late in the deeper Guineas Prelude here run at BM 65 level. Again drawn to drift back, but that run tops him off nicely for the step up to a mile, and will carry 1kg less. 6. Dubai Warrior is a big threat, hitting peak fitness fourth-up with gear changes from the inside draw, and dropping significantly in grade from his last two. Keep safe 8. Jamacri, a Warwick Farm-based mare, who also has claims dropping back sharply in distance fourth-up, with blinkers being added.

Grit and determination leads to a stunning win by Joe Pride's smart mare In Flight Randwick feature
In Flight, racing's pin-up girl, wasn't entitled to win at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The track wasn't as wet as she prefers, she was slow to begin and the race tempo was against her but the flashy mare was still able to find a way to beat a classy field in the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes (1200m). There might have been better horses to win the Australian Turf Club's feature winter sprint but few who try as hard as In Flight. The venerable Charley was there to watch the race named in his honour. He has seen all the great champions win on the famous track over his celebrated 70 years in racing but even he was full of admiration for the mare's determination. ' In Flight looked like she was going to run a good second but you had to like the way she really dug deep to win,' Charley said. 'Earlier in the day, Joe Pride told me this was a race he had never won before but he felt he could do it with this mare. 'I'm happy for Joe because I think he's an outstanding trainer and he's got a good horse with In Flight.' But Pride, who trained a hat-trick of winners to close out the Randwick meeting, started his stable winning streak with In Flight but admitted he was concerned when the winter sunshine resulted in the track being upgraded to a Soft 7 prior to the Bob Charley Stakes. 'When this track started drying out, I was a little bit concerned as the best version of this mare is on really wet tracks,' Pride said. 'The times they are running today aren't too slow at all so for her to come back from winning on a heavy track in Brisbane and get the job done is a very good effort. 'She has earned her crack at this level of racing but that was harder than what we would have liked today. She is doing a great job.' In Flight, ridden by Jay Ford, was backed into $2.35 favourite but she made her supporters sweat before she reeled in topweight Brudenell ($21) near the line to win by a long head with Contemporary ($12) just over a length away third. Ford also admitted he was concerned mid-race when the speed slackened and In Flight was conceding Brudenell a considerable start on the turn. 'To be quite frank, I thought they would go quicker than what they did,' Ford said. 'In the first furlong or so, they spread right out but then the speed backed off. 'I just had to bide my time with cover then present her but she still had it all to do which just shows how genuine she is. 'The second horse laid up outside the lead off a controlled tempo but she was still able to run him down. She was brilliant, just brilliant.' Ford said In Flight 'feels on song' this preparation: 'It's easy to say now she has two stakes wins to her name but she is just oozing confidence,' he said. In Flight is a rising five-year-old mare and was purchased for $220,000 as a yearling by Jamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbreds of Private Eye and Think About It fame. Pride believes we haven't seen the best of In Flight yet. 'In Flight is going to keep getting better with age. This time next year she will be a better horse again,' he said. 'But she's a pretty thing. Look at her tail, there are so many different shades of grey in it, she's a beautiful filly. 'I love her. I wouldn't see she is a sweet thing, she can be a bit of a 'tart' but she has all the attributes a good mare needs.' Pride then completed a race-to-race double when Headley Grange ($3.70) came with a powerful late surge through the pack to score by three-quarters of a length from Green Shadows ($15) and Dark Glitter ($21) to win the Singapore Pools Handicap (1300m). Headley Grange was held up for a run from the top of the straight and would have been a good thing beaten but jockey Adam Hyeronimus persevered, found a gap and the Pride sprinter did the rest. Shohisha's stunning win at Randwick highlights David Payne's mastery in training strategies
The maestro David Payne has enjoyed a hugely successful training career by not following convention. So, we shouldn't have been surprised when Payne produced another training masterclass when Shohisha won the Drinkwise Mile Handicap (1600m). Payne's filly was jumping from 1100m straight to the tough Randwick 'mile' course and it seems most punters and form experts had put a line through her chances. Shohisha drifted in betting to start the rank outsider at $15 in a competitive seven-horse field but she finished powerfully wide out to score an exciting win. But Payne, who has trained over 100 Group 1 winners, didn't know what all the fuss was about. 'Shohisha has been looking for the mile, if it is in their genes, they will get the trip,' Payne said. 'It didn't worry me she was going from 1100m to 1600m because in South Africa and in England, that's the way they train. 'If you run a horse out of its comfort zone, they will struggle, it's common sense. 'I was a jockey and if you ride them in a 1000m race, you are pushing and pushing all the way. 'It's often a harder race than if you run them at 1400m or 1600m where they can settle.' Only a length separated the first six over the line with Shohisha ($15), ridden by Tom Sherry, came from a clear last on the turn and arrived late to win by a nose from Pippie Beach ($13) with Piggyback ($5.50) a half head away third. Sherry admitted he was concerned about the slow early tempo set by Bright Red, ridden by Nash Rawiller. 'It's always a worry when you see Nash (Rawiller, Bright Red) in front,' Sherry said. 'There was not a lot of speed horses and he was taking complete control of the race but I still had confidence in my filly. 'Obviously, Mr Payne is a master at jumping them up massively in trip. From 1100m to 1600m is not an easy task. 'Off the slow tempo, I was able to utilise her turn of foot and I was extremely happy with her performance today. 'I have a lot of time for this filly, she has a great attitude. She attacked the line strongly, ran right through it, I'm sure she will get further and in better class, too.'' Shohisha improved her race record to three wins from just seven starts and although the filly obviously handles rain-affected tracks, Payne doesn't plan to keep her in training during winter. 'We will aim her at races like the Golden Pendant.' Meanwhile, emerging apprentice Anna Roper had a contender for ride of the day as she drove Thunderlips through the pack to win the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1400m). Thunderlips ($5) burst between runners to score by a long neck and deny jockey Ash Morgan his fourth winner of the day on Anythink Goes ($21) with Wooloowin ($51) running an improved race for third, a long neck further back. Trainer Bjorn Baker lauded Roper after the fast finishing win of Thunderlips. 'An excellent ride by Anna,' Baker said. 'She was able to overcome a wide gate and put him in a good spot. 'But he's a strange horse because it looks like he's only plodding but then he picks up late.' Roper said 'everything went to plan' on Thunderlips until the field reached the 600m. 'He was completely off the bit at the 600m and I was worried he wasn't going to find anything,' Roper said. 'But when the gap opened up at the 300m he wanted to sprint through it. He's hard work but it's nice to get the win on him.'
