Russia Ukraine war: Moscow launches nearly 500 drones for bombardment, biggest attack in three-year war

Time of India3 hours ago

Russia launched almost 500 drones at Ukraine in the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the three-year war, the Ukrainian air force said Monday, as the Kremlin pressed its summer offensive amid direct peace talks that have yet to deliver progress on stopping the fighting. Despite the difficulties in reaching a ceasefire, Russia and Ukraine swapped another batch of prisoners of war on Monday.
In addition to the 479 drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine from Sunday to Monday, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas.
Ukraine's air force said its air defences intercepted and destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles, claiming only 10 drones or missiles hit their targets. Officials said one person was injured. It was not possible to independently verify the claims.

A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometre front line.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late Sunday that in some of those areas, 'the situation is very difficult.' He provided no details.
Live Events
Ukraine is short-handed on the front line against its bigger enemy and needs more military support from its Western partners, especially air defences. But uncertainty about the US policy on the war has fuelled doubts about how much help Kyiv can count on.
Ukraine has produced some stunning counter-punches, however. Its June 1 drone attack on distant Russian air bases was unprecedented in its scope and sophistication.
Russia intensifies its attacks
The Ukrainian General Staff said special operations forces struck two Russian fighter jets stationed at the Savasleyka airfield in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region located about 650 kilometres northeast of the Ukrainian border.
The statement did not say how the planes were hit and there was no immediate comment on the claim from Russian authorities. Some Russian war bloggers said there was no damage to the warplanes.
Russian officials have said the recent intensified assaults are part of a series of retaliatory strikes for Ukraine's drone attack on air bases that were hosting nuclear-capable strategic bombers. A strike on a Ukrainian air base in Dubno, in the western Rivne region, was one such response, the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.
Two recent rounds of direct peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul have yielded no significant breakthroughs beyond pledges to swap prisoners as well as thousands of their dead and seriously wounded troops. Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated he will keep fighting until his conditions are met.

Police urge citizens to use new anti-narcotics helpline

Jaipur: Rajasthan Police has urge citizens to actively use the Union govt's newly launched anti-narcotics helpline, MANAS-1933, aimed at curbing drug trafficking and supporting rehabilitation of those affected by drug addiction. The 24x7 helpline allows the public to confidentially share information related to narcotics smuggling, as well as seek counselling and guidance for individuals battling substance abuse. The initiative is part of the Union govt's "Zero Tolerance" policy towards drugs and is linked with anti-narcotics task forces (ANTFs) across India. According to officials, the helpline is a key component of the govt's broader vision of achieving a drug-free India by 2047. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, ensuring both security and trust, they said. The directive for state-level implementation and mass awareness of the helpline comes from Mahendra Kumar Khinchi, joint secretary of the home department. All departments have been instructed to ensure widespread promotion of MANAS-1933, with efforts extending down to schools, colleges, and village councils. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Düsseldorf: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo To support this awareness drive, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has launched an official awareness portal — — offering posters, brochures, videos, and other materials that can be downloaded and shared with the public. US-China talks in London: Rare earths, export curbs on table

Talks between the US and China kicked off in London on Monday, with the US signaling a willingness to remove restrictions on exports in exchange for assurances that China is easing limits on rare earth shipments. The Trump administration expects that "after the handshake" in London, any export controls from the US will be eased and rare earths will be released by China, Kevin Hassett , head of the at the White House's National Economic Council, told CNBC. It was the clearest signal yet that the US is willing to offer such a concession. The first round of negotiations since the teams met a month ago is aimed at restoring confidence that both are living up to commitments made in Geneva. During those discussions, Washington and Beijing agreed to lower crippling tariffs for 90 days to allow time to hammer out ways to address a trade imbalance that the Trump administration blames on an unfair playing field. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users Don't Forget To Do This Before Monday Read More Undo Aim is to Dodge Clash The confusion after the Geneva meeting about China's rare earth export-permitting process, combined with US limits on tech shipments and Washington's recent crackdown on Chinese student visas, underscore the complexity of deal-making between China and the US. The US and China "just want to get back to where they were in Switzerland with a few more agreements down on paper to understand what is gonna be licensed, what gets permitted, what doesn't," he added. A phone call last week between President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping appeared to give fresh momentum to reviving talks and reaching a deal. On Monday at London's Lancaster HouseUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet a Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. The addition of Lutnick, who's in charge of curbs on the sale of advanced technology, signals Trump may be willing to consider reversing some of the restrictions that threaten to hobble China's long-term growth ambitions, ranging from tech supplies to jet engine parts.
