Three Express trains to start from Bhubaneswar New station
BHUBANESWAR: In a huge relief for passengers from northern parts of the city, three Express trains will originate from Bhubaneswar New station from May 12.
The station developed a couple of years back to reduce the burden on Bhubaneswar main station was used as a temporary halt for trains during emergencies.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said Bhubaneswar-Mumbai Konark Express, Bhubaneswar-Secunderabad Visakha Express and Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam Intercity Express will now originate from Bhubaneswar New station and later some other south-bound trains will start from the station.
Bhubaneswar-Mumbai Konark Express will originate at 2.40 pm from Bhubaneswar New Station and the train will leave for Mumbai on its earlier scheduled time after reaching Bhubaneswar main station at 3 pm. Bhubaneswar-Secunderabad Visakha Express will originate at 8 am from Bhubaneswar New station. It will leave for Secunderabad at 8.40 am after reaching Bhubaneswar main station at 8.20 am.
Similarly, Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam Intercity Express will originate at 7.15 am from Bhubaneswar New station and follow its scheduled departure time of 7.45 am after reaching Bhubaneswar main station at 7.25 am. These trains will halt at Mancheswar railway station for two minutes each.
A railway official said the station will serve as a convenient hub for students studying in numerous engineering, medical, and other educational institutions located in north Bhubaneswar.

Pollachi train passengers highlight various demands
The Pollachi Train Passengers Welfare Association has submitted a petition to the Railway Board and the Governor of Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan, pressing for the fulfilment of five vital demands concerning the Pollachi-Coimbatore and Palakkad-Pollachi-Dindigul sections of the Southern Railway. Association president S. Balakrishnan emphasised that the Pollachi Junction serves four taluks- Pollachi, Kinathukadavu, Anaimalai and Valparai, and was in urgent need of improved rail connectivity for the benefit of tourists, pilgrims, professionals, students, and traders. The association has called for the extension of the Bengaluru-Coimbatore Uday Express (Train Nos.: 22665/22666) to Pollachi and Kinathukadavu to benefit the large number of IT and private sector professionals from Pollachi and nearby regions who frequently travel to Bengaluru. It also sought the extension of the Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU (Train Nos.: 66610/66609) to Pollachi via Anaimalai Road, which would greatly benefit students, employees, and tourists. The association has also proposed to the authorities, the introduction of a direct overnight train from Pollachi to Chennai Central via Kinathukadavu, Erode, and Katpadi that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 9 p.m., instead of the existing Palakkad-MGR Central daily express that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 5.20 p.m. It highlighted the need for a direct Tirunelveli-Mumbai (Dadar) Express via Palani, Pollachi, Kozhikode, Mangaluru, and Madgaon (Goa) to improve connectivity to Udupi, Goa and Mumbai, benefitting pilgrims, tourists and businessmen. It also suggested increasing the frequency of the existing Tirunelveli- Mumbai Dadar Express (Train Nos.: 22630/22629). Finally, the association has demanded an increase in the number of coaches in the Tiruchendur-Palakkad unreserved express (Train Nos.: 16731/16732) which currently has only 12 coaches. Citing daily overcrowding, the association has requested four additional unreserved and two to three reserved coaches, especially to serve the elderly, women, and children. Despite repeated petitions over the past seven years, the association noted that there had been no positive response and appealed for immediate action.

Bhubaneswar: For residents of Odisha looking forward to vacationing in places with cooler and pleasant weather, this year's summer has forced many to cancel such plans in the backdrop of terror attacks and adverse weather conditions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The attack in Pahalgam last month caused many to cancel their trips to Jammu & Kashmir, which otherwise is a popular choice among tourists in Odisha during summer. Additionally, heavy rainfall in the hills and extreme hot and humid conditions in the plains further disrupted holiday plans. Popular summer getaways in the state like Puri, Gopalpur, Chandipur and Koraput also saw fewer visitors due to harsh weather conditions. With schools closed for the summer break, many families were looking forward to a peaceful getaway, but the disruption came as a letdown. "We booked our tickets for Kashmir back in March for a vacation in May. But after the Pahalgam attack, we didn't want to take any chance with the kids. Safety comes first. It's unfortunate because this was our first planned trip in two years," said Pallavi Das, a software professional from Bhubaneswar. Many who turned to popular hill stations in the northeast, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand as alternatives faced another hurdle of heavy monsoon rains that arrived earlier than expected and reports of landslides, road blockages and flash floods in the northeast led to a flurry of cancellations. "After a lot of dilly-dallying, we decided to visit the popular summer getaways of Shimla and Manali before the school holidays were over and to get respite from the hot and humid conditions in the state. We didn't want to risk getting stranded and there is no point in staying in a hotel after spending so much," said Rashmita Swain, a homemaker in Bhubaneswar. Travel agents across Odisha confirmed a surge in last-minute cancellations and refund requests. "After the terror attack and with the monsoon coming early, around 60% of our May and June bookings were cancelled. Almost all bookings to Northeast have been cancelled for June," said Sanjay Mishra, owner of a Bhubaneswar-based travel agency. Families that opted for destinations in the plains like Kolkata, Hyderabad or Vizag faced sweltering heat and oppressive humidity. "We went ahead with our Vizag trip thinking it would be better than staying home. But the heat was unbearable. We stayed indoors most of the time. It felt like we wasted money just to change rooms," said Arvind Patnaik, a banker from Berhampur. "The beautiful beaches of Odisha like Puri, Gopalpur or Chandipur are weekend getaways to relax during summer where the temperature is usually lower than what it is in cities. But this year, the humidity levels are high, making it very discomforting and children are not ready to go out of air-conditioned rooms," said Mrinalini Mohapatra, a resident of Saheed Nagar in the city.

Prashanti Express to get addtional AC coach
An additional III-tier AC coach will be attached to train No. 18463 Bhubaneswar-KSR Bengaluru Prashanti Express from May 29 to 31. In the return direction, 18464 KSR Bengaluru - Bhubaneswar Prashanti Express will be augmented with one III-tier AC coach from May 30 to June 1. The augmentation is being done to clear the extra rush of waitlisted passengers. Passengers have been requested to make use of these services, according to an official release.
