Renewable Energy Certs an option: Expert
Published on: Mon, May 05, 2025
By: Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: Nirinder and Nazliyah. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's clean energy transition is not only benefiting the environment but could also create new economic opportunities through carbon credits and renewable energy certificates, according to electrical engineer, Nirinder Singh Johl. 'With the second-lowest carbon emissions from electricity in Malaysia, Sabah is well-positioned to capitalise on its cleaner energy mix, particularly as global businesses increasingly look to reduce their carbon footprint,' he said at the at the inaugural Sabah Renewable Energy Conference 2025's Panel Session 2 titled Overcoming Hurdles and Transforming Tomorrow: Sabah's Renewable Energy Transition Strategies. 'There has been a new standard on carbon credits for grid-connected energy storage. Probably Sabah could explore that,' he said, adding that it gives a bit of financial sense to having storage. The Asia CarbonX Change PLT Chief Executive Officer pointed out Sabah's environmental advantage, noting the significant difference in carbon emissions compared to Peninsular Malaysia. 'Peninsula is 0.75 tons of CO2 per megawatt. We do not have coal here. We took a chance, a stand some time ago as a result of which the grid emission factor of Sabah is 0.55 and Sarawak obviously lowest, 0.19,' he said. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) represent another opportunity for funding clean energy projects in the State. Nirinder described these as the block chain for the green market. 'Every time you generate one megawatt hour, you stop conventional energy production with the same amount. The one from renewable does not have carbon in it. 'REC is basically the currency for the renewable energy market,' he said. For Sabah to fully participate in this market, he suggested developing a local certification system. 'If Sabah wants to go, probably Sabah needs to have an issuer, a Sabah issuer or probably in Malaysia, we call it M-VAX. We call it S-VAX for Sabah issuer. This is how you brand yourself,' he said. He said the financial incentives are substantial, with RECs commanding different prices depending on market maturity and regulatory requirements. 'Solar RECs in Peninsular Malaysia cost USD5, while in Singapore they command USD65 due to their carbon market and compliance requirements. 'When taxation comes in here, the prices of RECs will go up, making it perfect sense to include in your financial model,' he said. Among his recommendations for Sabah's renewable energy development was aligning power purchase agreements with the actual lifespan of energy plants. 'If the economic life of a solar plant is 25 years, give them 25 years. A hydro is 32 years, then give them 33 years,' he said. Meanwhile, Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad Sector Head of Industry Partnership Nazliyah Mohd Ali said the expansion of renewable energy is also creating demand for workers with specialised skills. 'Last year, we conducted 10 sectors of impact study for Artificial Intelligence, digital and green economy to understand what the impact to the Malaysian workforce is,' she said. 'Based on the findings, we understand that there is a need for energy-related skills like energy economists, energy traders, all those things are moving forward for the next three to five years. 'Based on the National Energy Transition Roadmap, we know that there are a need for 62,000 professionals in green technology, green field,' she said. To bridge the skills gap, TalentCorp has come up with the MyMahir Future Skills Talent Council and developed tailored programs. 'We developed curated programs, which are very much according to what industry wants. We want to see what the skills gap from the fresh graduate are and see what we can do to fit in the gap in terms of the skills,' she said. For those interested in exploring these career paths, she pointed to available resources online. 'This study, the impact study is actually available online. You can go to mymahir.my and you can actually download this copy. 'We have another separate platform for secondary and primary schools. If you have children, you can go to our platform and they can see interactive videos to understand what is actually done in layman terms for them to learn,' she said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Avangaad divests RM44.5m FSO asset to re-allocate capital for next-phase investments -
MAIN Market-listed marine operations service and solutions provider Avangaad Bhd [formerly E.A. Technique (M) Bhd] has finalised the sale of its floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel for a US$10.5 mil (RM44.5 mil) to deliver an immediate gain of RM29.4 mil. At any rate, the latest divestment unlocks RM44.5 mil in immediate cash flow to the group which is now more precisely identified as a marine COP (coordinator, operator and partner). The proceeds will be strategically re-deployed into higher-yielding and longer-tenured assets in line with Avangaad's long-term strategy while providing additional headroom for financial flexibility. For starter, the transaction is expected to strengthen the group's financial capacity to sustain a broad, balanced fleet and to expand its service offerings across oil & gas (O&G) and non-O&G markets. 'This transaction is about creating optionality. We are monetising this asset at the right time to ensure Avangaad stays agile and well-capitalised. In asset strategy, success lies in aligning capability with contract tenure,' commented Avangaad's executive director Datuk Wira Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin. 'The group's fleet also comprises vessel types capable of securing decade-long commitments, each contributing uniquely to the group's long-term portfolio optimisation.' Moreover, the proceeds would serve as a natural hedge to strengthen Avangaad's agility in navigating cyclical market changes. 'They position us to pursue opportunities that could enhance our earnings visibility and also preserve our balanced mix between O&G and marine logistics,' envisages Mubarak. 'As the group's newly appointed management, we take pride in sharpening our industry differentiator by positioning Avangaad as the Marine COP through our 4P model: Port, People, Product, and Platform.' He added: 'This defines us not merely as asset owners but as the coordinator, operator and partner delivering end-to-end marine solutions. The capital unlocked today further fortifies our agility and decisiveness, thus setting a clear course to redefine integrated maritime solutions in the region.' While the next capital deployment is under consideration, the latest gain re-affirms Avangaad's stable operational cash flow by providing strategic capacity to pursue expanded charter contract opportunities. At the close of today's (Aug 13) market trading, Avangaad was up 1 sen or 3.51% to 29.5 sen with 9.59 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM391 mil. – Aug 13, 2025

MR D.I.Y. posts higher 2Q profit, declares RM142.1mil dividend
KUALA LUMPUR: MR D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd will continue to expand its retail footprint by strategically launching new stores across its core and sub-brands in 2025. 'These efforts aim to reinforce the group's market leadership and its position as the value retailer of choice for all Malaysians,' the home improvement retailer said in the notes accompanying its financial results. MR D.I.Y. sees no material impact on its business operations despite market volatility from geopolitical tensions, tariff changes, and domestic policy shifts, including the revised Sales and Service Tax in July 2025 and the 2% EPF contribution for foreign workers. In the second quarter ended June 30 (2Q25), MR D.I.Y.'s net profit rose 2.2% to RM158.6mil, or 1.67 sen per share, lifting first-half (1H25) net profit 10.9% to RM332.7mil, or 3.51 sen per share. Quarterly revenue rose 1.5% to RM1.2bil, lifting first-half revenue 5.6% to RM2.47bil from RM2.3bil in 1H24. The group opened 31 net new stores during the quarter, bringing the total to 1,502 as at 1H25 - an increase of 12.1% year-on-year (y-o-y). Total transactions rose 5.0% y-o-y to 48.5 million, partially offset by a 3.3% decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction. MR D.I.Y said it remained focused on delivering long-term, sustainable value to stakeholders through strategic investments in growth and technology to enhance operational efficiency, while maintaining a consistent dividend policy. For 2Q25, the group declared an interim single-tier dividend of RM0.015 per ordinary share, amounting to about RM142.1mil, representing an 89.6% payout ratio. The dividend will be paid on Sept 8 to shareholders on the Record of Depositors as at Aug 29.

MR DIY net profit rises to RM158.58mil in 2Q
KUALA LUMPUR: MR DIY Group (M) Bhd's net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2QFY2025) rose to RM158.58 million from RM155.21 million in the same quarter a year ago. Revenue for the quarter under review was higher by 1.2 per cent at RM1.21 billion versus RM1.2 billion. The group attributed the better performance to the contributions from new stores. "This growth came off a high base in 2QFY2024, which had benefited from the Hari Raya festive season. The group opened 31 new stores during the quarter, bringing the total to 1,502 as at 1HFY2025 -- an increase of 12.1 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y)," said the home improvement retailer in a Bursa Malaysia filing today. Total transactions rose 5.0 per cent y-o-y to 48.5 million, partially offset by a 3.3 per cent decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction. On the outlook, MR DIY said the group does not foresee the ongoing market volatility stemming from geopolitical tensions, tariff adjustments, and changes to domestic policies, including the revised Sales and Service Tax effective July 2025 and the two per cent Employees Provident Fund contribution for foreign workers to have a material impact on its business operations. "Looking ahead, the group will continue to expand its retail footprint by strategically launching new stores across its core and sub-brands in 2025. These efforts aim to reinforce the group's market leadership and its position as the value retailer of choice for Malaysians," it said. In a statement, MR DIY announced an interim single-tier dividend of 1.5 sen per ordinary share totalling RM142.1 million in respect of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025, to be paid on Sep 8, 2025. This brings the total dividend payout for the first half of the financial year 2025 (1HFY2025) to RM274.7 million. MR DIY's chief executive officer Adrian Ong said the retailer has steadily increased its dividend payout over the years to deliver strong cash returns to shareholders. "Our consistent track record since our listing in 2020 reflects this commitment. Backed by robust net operating cash flows and solid financial performance, we have exceeded our 50 per cent to 65 per cent target payout while continuing to invest in growth," he added.
