Springfield student receives early acceptance to U.S. Military Academy at West Point
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – In a little over two months, a senior at the Springfield Renaissance School, Damon Penna, will be heading to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Penna will be heading to West Point on June 30, then begin seven weeks of boot camp. Throughout high school, he has been involved in a variety of activities to prepare him for this moment.

'I'm very involved,' Penna said. 'NHS President, Student Council President, I do a bunch of stuff with our 'crew,' which is kind of like a Renaissance tradition. Outside of school, I'm part of three different sports, starts with soccer, then swimming, and volleyball.'
A bright future is ahead for this Springfield student turned cadet. West Point in New York is a highly selective U.S. military academy committed to turning cadets into Army officers.
'I have uncles in the army, but also just learning about U.S. history and learning about what the army has done for our country has influenced me,' Penna said.
A big part of Penna's life is service. He frequently volunteers with his grandparents after church.
'The sandwich ministry that we are a part of for our church is a weekly thing,' Penna said. 'We go to mass at 10:00 a.m., and right after we have our sandwich ministry, where we usually make around 400 sandwiches, then go to downtown Springfield to pass them out.'
Penna said that his advice to underclassmen is to continue working hard and to follow your passion.

Rich Tettemer to Retire from WWLP in Massachusetts After 37 Years
WWLP anchor Rich Tettemer is retiring after 37 years at the Springfield, Massachusetts NBC affiliate. He started his career as a videotape editor at WFLA in Tampa, Florida in 1984 and went on to become a weekend sports anchor at KODE in Joplin, Missouri. Tettemer joined WWLP on Patriots Day, April 18, 1988 with the with both the Boston Marathon and the Red Sox morning game. He was named a morning anchor on October 16, 2006, after 18 and a half years on the sports desk and has been the morning news anchor for another 18 and a half years. Below, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, along with his colleagues said goodbye to Tettemer. Tettemer will be replaced by reporter Julia O'Keefe. She'll join Kaelee Collins on Monday. Last week, weather reporter Jack Wu said he was leaving the station for a job in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Chicopee Mayor Vieau wins trophy at Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic teed off Friday morning from Franconia Golf Course in Springfield. The day kicked off with the mayors of Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield and Chicopee all taking part in the coveted Mayor's Cup. Each mayor had three short putts to make. For each one they made, they got to take a second shot at a long putt. Closest ball wins. LIST: Ironman triathlon to cause weekend road closures In the end, Chicopee Mayor John Vieau came out victorious, recapturing the title from told 22News why he looks forward to this event, 'I get to collaborate with the mayors of western Mass. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and West Springfield Mayor William Reichelt have yet to secure the elusive trophy, but they put up a good fight this year. Jeffrey Speller Foundation ‘4 Change' presents check for Springfield youth golf program
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check to the City of Springfield, helping to further their youth golf programs. A student part of the golf program said, 'Thank you for the people who contributed to give kids like me a chance to play golf and sports like these.' Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' charitable golf tournament 22News Anchor Ciara Speller and founder of Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' presented a check for $5,000 alongside her mother on behalf of their foundation, the Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change'. The donation, benefiting the Springfield middle school golf program, was made as her father, Jeffrey, was an avid golfer with a goal to inspire the youth. 'Providing this check in memory of my father, which was made possible through our inaugural tournament in August, is just so meaningful to us. I know that he would be so thrilled with this and we are just so happy to carry his legacy, and his mission and his vision,' 22News Anchor Ciara Speller said. Marc Gomes, the vice president at Van Sickle Academy, shared what this program means for many of his students, 'Giving students from the inner-city the opportunity to do something they may not have an opportunity to do. It's giving them exposure to play golf, which is actually fun, and it is also giving them an opportunity to network.' 'Discipline, self-confidence, resilience, and determination are all key values that are so important to positively shaping a young person's life, and something that my dad really credited this game with positively influencing his life,' Ciara Speller stated. The second annual Jeffrey Speller Foundation '4 Change' is June 28th at Wyckoff Country Club. 'Through that event, we will of course, be able to provide more funding for other deserving youth who want to partake in the game of golf, here in western Massachusetts and beyond.' Golfing spots are limited, but there is also a lunch and dinner for non-golfers to enjoy and still be able to support Jeffrey's mission.
