Macedonian Thrace Brewery: European Court of Justice Rules That Heineken N.V Must Answer for the Market Abuses of Its Greek Subsidiary
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) this week ruled that damages claims arises from market abuses by Heineken's Greek subsidiary should be decided in the Netherlands court.
The ruling is a crucial milestone in efforts to make Heineken as a corporation accountable for the actions of its subordinate businesses. It followed closely ECJ Advocate General Kokott's September 2024 opinion, finding that there is a 'close connection' between the claims brought against both Heineken and its 98.8%-owned subsidiary on the basis that they form one and the same undertaking which infringed competition law which is sufficient to establish that the Netherlands is the appropriate jurisdiction to hear these claims.
This week's decision represents the final setback for Heineken as it seeks to dodge liability in the Netherlands for the actions of Athenian Brewery. In October 2024, the Amsterdam District Court already cleared the way for MTB to seek damages from Heineken, finding that Heineken and its subsidiary formed part of a single undertaking and, as such, are jointly and severally liable for Athenian Brewery's proven market abuses.
This week's ECJ ruling confirms that the Dutch Court is able to determine the amount in damages Heineken owes to MTB, in a hearing likely to be held this year. MTB is pursuing damages in excess of €180 million, including interest to date. At current rates, more than €7.8 million in interest is accruing annually.
Heineken also faces similar claims from competitors – most immediately from Carlsberg, which revealed in October 2024 that it is seeking more than €300 million from the beer giant in a near identical damages claim also stemming from Heineken's market abuses in Greece. In recent years, Heineken has been fined or investigated by competition authorities in Austria, the US, UK, Hungary, India and elsewhere.
Just this week, as Heineken announced its Full Year Results, a hearing began in the Austrian Cartel Court to determine the final sanction its subsidiary Brau Union will face for proven competition violations. The Austrian competition authority (AFCA) found in 2023 that it had committed anti-competitive practices 'that restrict the sales opportunities and market entry of competing brewers and oust existing drinks retailers from the market'. Given the scale of Brau Union's market abuse, the final penalty could be up to 10% of Heineken's global turnover generated in the preceding business year.
Demetri Chriss, Director of Business Development at MTB, said:
'The ECJ ruling has finally confirmed, at the very highest level, that MTB was right to pursue damages claims in the Netherlands against both Heineken and Athenian Brewery. We find it fitting that the ECJ decision has been handed down 27 years to the day after MTB launched Vergina beer in Greece.
There is no doubt in our minds that Heineken's elaborate tapestry of market abuses has been masterminded and orchestrated at head office, implemented through its revolving cast of Heineken 'lifers' who rotate in and out of their Greek Operating Company.
We look forward this year to obtaining redress for the market abuses that Greece's competition regulator definitively identified more than a decade ago.'

Crown Point council approves three athletic-related businesses
It was a slam dunk for three athletic-related new business requests that came before the Crown Point City Council on Monday. The city council unanimously approved special use allowances for the following: a cheerleading facility at 1055 Troutwine Road; a soccer training facility at 1025 Troutwine Road; and a fitness facility at 1849 E. Summit St. The city council also unanimously approved a special use to allow townhomes to be built at 1525 W. 96th Ave. James Hus, from DVG Engineering, said plans are to build single, six-unit townhomes on a parcel of land located at West 96th Avenue and Merrillville Road. Hus said he didn't know the exact price range of the townhomes but estimated they would be 'north of $250,000.' Hus said he realizes this is the first of two steps since he will need to come back for city officials' approval to change zoning of the property from B-2 to R-3. Once that is completed then construction plans can go forward, Hus said. Russell Pozen, from DVG Engineering, relayed plans for an 18,000-square-foot cheerleading facility to be built at 1055 Troutwine Road. Pozen said the indoor-only business would be open during standard business hours. City Councilwoman Laura Sauerman, R-4th, questioned what standard business hours meant since she envisioned it as more of a '9 to 5' type of business. Pozen said typically the hours for the facility would be in the evening, from 5 to 9 p.m. 'That makes more sense,' Sauerman said. Pozen introduced the owner of the proposed 12,500-square-foot new soccer facility to be located at 1025 Troutwine Road. Owner Andy Bridgman said his facility would specialize in educating young soccer players. Bridgman said he will work with the Crown Point Youth Soccer organization. 'We want to help their teams grow,' Bridgman said. Business hours will be primarily from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the weekdays with some personal training and games on Sundays. Ellen Sistovaris said she plans to open a pilates business at 1849 E. Summit St. that will be named after both of her Greek grandmothers. 'I'm so excited to open this studio,' she said. The new business, which will feature appointment-only yoga and pilates classes, will be called Leni's Pilates. Classes will be held in the morning and early evening and will entail about 10 participants taking yoga and 10 taking pilates.

Kevin Durant Next Team Betting Odds: Where Will KD Land This Summer?
As of June 4, DraftKings lists the Rockets, Suns and Timberwolves -- in that order -- as the teams that are most likely to land Kevin Durant this summer. As of June 4, DraftKings lists the Rockets, Suns and Timberwolves -- in that order -- as the teams that are most likely to land Kevin Durant this summer. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The NBA is once again owning the news cycle in June, and we're not just talking about the fascinating Finals matchup between the Pacers and Thunder. In addition to the on-court action set to take place in Oklahoma City and Indianapolis over the next couple weeks, there are massive stories worth keeping tabs on in New York (where the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday), Milwaukee (is Giannis on his way out?) and Phoenix. The Suns are drawing attention because of the growing likelihood that 36-year-old superstar Kevin Durant will leave the desert this summer. Durant, who will turn 37 in September, is currently under contract in Phoenix for one more year, at a salary of just under $55 million. The former Thunder, Warriors and Nets star joined the Suns via trade in February of 2023. He is coming off back-to-back All-Star seasons in '23-24 and '24-25, but his days as a Sun appear numbered after the team failed to reach the playoffs this year despite having the most expensive roster in the league. Kevin Durant Next Team Odds The odds below come from DraftKings (as of June 4). Fine print, from DK: "First Regular Season minute played to be for which NBA team? [2025-26 only]" Note: While DraftKings offers odds for all 30 teams in this market, we're listing the eight that currently have the shortest odds (15-to-1 or shorter). Rockets (+225) Suns (+350) Timberwolves (+400) Spurs (+1000) Knicks (+1000) Pelicans (+1400) Heat (+1500) Mavericks (+1500) Kevin Durant Next Team Breakdown, Prediction While the reporting around Giannis and the Bucks stops short of indicating the Greek Freak already has a foot out the door, it's almost a foregone conclusion that Durant will not be a Sun when the '25-26 season begins next October. The fact that the Suns are longer than 3-to-1 to retain him despite Durant being under contract for one more year is telling. And Tuesday's report from The Athletic's Kelly Iko -- who cited sources saying that Phoenix is in "aggressive in pursuit" of trading Kevin Durant -- marked the latest indication that he will be in a new uniform in October. Best Bet On Kevin Durant's Next Team: Houston Rockets Generally speaking, any time the favorite in a betting market is available at longer than 2-to-1, it's hard to resist. And in this case, there's a lot more to like about the possibility of Houston trading for Durant than those odds. First, let's talk about his potential fit with the young Rockets. Is there a team with a greater need for a veteran halfcourt shot creator and scorer than Houston? Ime Udoka's squad was terrific defensively and in transition this year. Its ability to overwhelm opponents athletically helped it finished second in the Western Conference, behind only the Thunder, at 52-30. But the Rockets entered the playoffs as an underdog against the Warriors because of questions about their halfcourt offense. As many expected, regular-season standouts Jalen Green and Amen Thompson both struggled to get going offensively against Golden State, and big offensive series by Fred VanVleet and Alperen Sengun weren't enough for Houston to advance. Anyone who's watched Durant (a career 26.6 points per game scorer on 52.7 percent FG shooting) can easily envision him thriving alongside what would be one of the most athletic supporting casts in the NBA, regardless of who/what Houston has to get up to land KD. With that in mind, where the future Hall-of-Famer ends up will probably come down to a bidding war between the Rockets, Timberwolves and whoever else emerges. In terms of draft assets, Houston is as flush as almost anyone in the league. It holds the No. 9 pick this year, an unprotected first-rounder in 2027 and all seven of its own first-round picks in the years to come. In total, the Rockets have nine incoming future first-round picks. They also have a deep rotation full of young talent: a staggering eight of the Rockets' top 12 players by minutes played this year are 23 years old or younger. It's hard to pinpoint what it will take to appease Phoenix in a Durant trade, but assuming that A) the Rockets are truly set on landing him, and B) the Suns don't stick to a trade demand that changes Houston's mind, KD feels like a safe bet to start next season as a Rocket. Given those two substantial caveats, I wouldn't recommend the following bet at much shorter than the current price. It's hard to resist at longer than 2-to-1 right now, though. A 0.5-unit play on Durant Next Team: Houston Rockets (+225 at DK) is the way to go here. Newsweek may earn an affiliate commission if you sign up through the links in this article. Liverpool title winner offered SURPRISE escape route by former club
Liverpool look set to conduct a summer overhaul in the transfer market. The club have been linked with several star names - including Florian Wirtz - and have already secured the signing of Jeremie Frimpong. Sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot are also eyeing long-term solutions at left-back, which has become a priority position for the summer market. Advertisement Andy Robertson, 31, is out of contract in 2026 and wasn't always at his best last season. Kostas Tsimikas, meanwhile, has never truly convinced that he could take over from the Scotland international on a full-time basis. The duo shared duties throughout the 2024/25 season but an upgrade is being sought. Left-back to be sacrificed Milos Kerkez looks like he is the chosen candidate - and is said to be close to completing a £45m transfer from Bournemouth in the upcoming days. There won't be space for three senior left-backs at the club however and one of Robertson and Tsimikas should leave. The Greek, 29, is out of contract in 2027 and would probably bring in more money than if Robertson was sold. Advertisement And now Tsimikas has been linked with a return to former club Olympiacos - following earlier transfer rumours suggesting he was a target for Leeds. © IMAGO Olympiacos want Tsimikas back 'Olympiacos is looking favorably on the prospect of "Tsimi" returning to the port,' reads a report in Metrosport in Greece. The Greek champions are seeking to bolster their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League. Tsimikas would provide experience and quality for the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League winners. He spent five years on the books of Olympiacos before joining Liverpool back in 2020. Tsimikas played 29 times under Arne Slot during the 2024/25 season. He made nine starts in the Premier League and five in the Champions League. Overall he's played in 115 matches for the Reds in five years, winning all the major domestic honours during his time at the club.
