
Court approves S'wak Forestry Corp application to dispose of seized animal parts
SIBU: The Magistrates' Court here has approved the Sarawak Forestry Corporation's (SFC) application to dispose of half a tonne of wild animal parts and freezers.
These items were confiscated from homes, shoplots, and a pasar tamu in Sibu.
Senior Assistant Registrar Jessica Lee Suk Kiun, acting as Magistrate on Tuesday (May 20), approved the application by a wildlife officer under Section 48 of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998 and Section 407A of the Criminal Procedure Code.
According to SFC counsel DPP Ronald Felix Hardin, the seized items are perishable.
The freezers are considered equipment under Section 407A of the Criminal Procedure Code. He cited limited storage capacity at SFC's regional office in Sibu as another reason for disposal.
He added that one suspect has absconded despite an arrest warrant issued by a Sessions Court judge.
The confiscated animal meat includes wild boar, deer, python species, and a lesser mousedeer.
The suspects are being investigated under Section 37(1) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998.
Several wildlife officers attended the court proceedings.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued the order to allow the prosecution time to obtain the chemistry report and other forensic reports, which have yet to be completed. Prosecuting officer Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin informed the court that the investigation officer had advised that the ballistic and post-mortem reports are expected to take approximately two months to finalise. However, counsel Russell Lim from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who is representing the 30-year-old accused, requested an earlier mention date to enable the prosecution to update the court on the case's progress. Lim further submitted that the case is of public interest and considered high-profile. Genesis is also represented by foundation lawyers Brendan Ting and Zoe Chan. The court also ordered for Genesis to be further remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison. According to the charge, Genesis allegedly murdered Muhammad Zaki Iderus, 34, by shooting at him on Jalan Stephen Yong. The charge is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The Section provides for the death penalty, or if not sentenced to death, imprisonment for a term of between 30 and 40 years, along with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Earlier reports stated that on April 26, two men arrived at the Batu Kawa police station at around 5.30am and informed the authorities that their friend had been shot while travelling on Jalan Stephen Yong. Police later found the victim had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Teenage girl in Kuching gets good behaviour bond for stealing tablet

KUCHING (June 10): The Magistrates' Court here today ordered a 17-year-old girl to be placed on a one-year good behaviour bond for stealing a tablet belonging to an optical shop along Jalan Rubber Barat. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed the order effective today, with two sureties in sum of RM1,000. The order was made pursuant to Section 91(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001, following the submission of the girl's moral report by the Social Welfare Department (JKM). The offence was committed at approximately 1.30pm on Feb 8, 2025 The girl was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction. Based on the facts of the case, the complainant—an employee of the shop—discovered that the shop's tablet, which had been placed on the counter, was missing. After an unsuccessful search, the complainant reviewed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and observed the girl taking the tablet and placing it in her sling bag before leaving the premises. A police report was subsequently lodged, and investigations led to the arrest of the girl on Feb 10. Further investigation revealed that during a search of the girl's residence, she personally pointed out the tablet, which was found on the kitchen table. Jobless man charged with wife's murder in Bukit Gambir, Johor
TANGKAK: An unemployed man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with the murder of his wife in Bukit Gambir, near here, early this month. Mohamad Khairul Azmi Ithnin, 32, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read out to him before Magistrate Lee Kim Kiat. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The accused was alleged to have caused the death of Iecah Junus, 34, at a house in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir, between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm on June 2. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Amirah Sapian requested that no bail be offered and applied for the accused to be sent to Hospital Permai for psychiatric evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The court allowed the application and set July 8 for mention of the case to submit pathology, toxicology, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) reports. Meanwhile, Tangkak police chief Supt Roslan Mohd Talib in a statement said the accused is also expected to be charged in the Muar Sessions Court today under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire. The suspect allegedly set fire to nine vehicles parked at his in-laws' residence in Kampung Pengkalan, Kampung Durian Chondong, near here, on June 3. He was remanded for seven days from June 4 to assist investigations.
