Treasury to manage rationalisation of RON95 subsidies now, says Rafizi

PETALING JAYA : The decision on the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation plan has been fully handed over to the finance ministry following a Cabinet decision, says economy minister Rafizi Ramli.
He said his ministry has engaged with the Cabinet four times regarding the matter and the current position is to await further updates from the finance ministry.
'The finance ministry will manage the entire process for RON95 subsidies after this.
'I think we should wait for their official announcement. It is best to get more details from the ministry,' Bernama reported him as saying after a forum in Kuala Lumpur today.
In March, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan was reported as saying the mechanism for the targeted RON95 subsidy was still being fine-tuned.
He said the government did not want to make any premature announcements on its implementation and an announcement is expected after the first half of this year.

Service tax expansion won't affect everyday services, say banking groups
The tax revision would not affect services such as savings, e-wallets, credit cards or ATM transactions. PETALING JAYA : Three major banking associations have assured Malaysians that everyday banking services will not be affected by the upcoming expansion of the service tax on financial services. The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM), the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM), and the Malaysian Investment Banking Association (MIBA) said the revised scope, which will take effect on July 1, would only affect selected corporate, treasury and investment banking services. They said that essential consumer services involving fees or commissions, such as those related to current or savings accounts, e-wallets, or credit cards, would be exempted from the service tax. Services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, payments, local fund transfers, debit card issuance and related annual fees, and ATM or branch transactions like bill payments or statement printing remain exempt from the service tax. 'These are considered essential banking services and remain out of scope for service tax purposes,' the associations said in a joint statement. They also confirmed that interest, profit-based charges, penalties, and credit card annual fees would not be affected. These exemptions, they said, are meant to ensure that routine banking for individual consumers remains untouched by the expanded tax framework. 'All banks under ABM, AIBIM and MIBA are committed to transparency. Where the service tax applies, the charges will be clearly indicated and communicated to customers,' the associations said. Customers unsure of how the expanded tax scope affects them have been urged to contact their banks directly. 'The banking industry will continue working with relevant authorities to ensure this transition is handled clearly and responsibly,' they said.

Ikim chairman dies at 76
Nur Manuty was appointed as Ikim chairman in May 2023. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) chairman Nur Manuty has died at the age of 76. An aide to Nur said the former PKR senator breathed his last at 11.27am at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Bernama reported. Nur, who served as a senator from 2015 to 2018, was appointed as Ikim chairman in May 2023. He replaced Kamal Hassan, who died three months prior to that. Nur used to lead the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, which was founded by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in 1971, and was also active in PKR, which he joined after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998. He was appointed as the party's information chief in 2010 and was most recently head of PKR's religious bureau. He contested general elections twice, in Larut and Bagan Serai in 1999 and 2013, but lost both times.

Sabah Umno open to working with GRS, but only if it's sincere
Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said overlapping seat claims with GRS in areas such as Pantai Dalit and Tanjong Keramat were a major hurdle to cooperation. PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno is open to working with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, but only if the ruling coalition is sincere in its approach to seat negotiations, says its chief Bung Moktar Radin. Claiming GRS tended to change its stance once an agreement had been reached, Bung said: 'We are still open to working with any local party, but they must be sincere. We don't want insincerity. 'What I mean by insincerity is that we agree on something today, then tomorrow they change their stand or change their decision on seats or put their candidates as independents for seats which we are contesting,' Bung told FMT. Bung said overlapping seat claims in places such as Pantai Dalit and Tanjong Keramat were making negotiations harder. 'That's why GRS has to be sincere when it negotiates with us,' he said. 'Our doors are still open. It is not too widely open and neither is it tightly shut.' However, Bung said Umno did not expect major problems with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) over seat distribution, as the two coalitions typically contested in different areas – PH in urban seats, and Umno in rural constituencies. He added that Sabah Umno was looking to contest in 35 seats, up from 32 in the last state election. Bung's latest comments mark a shift from his stance earlier this month, where he reportedly said that Sabah Umno would not work with GRS and would consider cooperation only after the outcome of the polls. Barisan Nasional and PH earlier announced an alliance for the Sabah polls, which must be held by the end of the year. However, the alliance prompted GRS to threaten to go solo. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim then stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. Masiung Banah, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president, was reported to have said that GRS was expected to contest at least 53 seats, while PH would go for 20 under their electoral pact. GRS and PH are currently allies in the Hajiji Noor state government, while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly.
