RCB to be sold? Diageo weighs options for stake sale in IPL 2025 winner

Time of Indiaa day ago

Diageo
Plc is considering options for its ownership of the
Indian Premier League
cricket franchise
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
, according to people familiar with the matter.
The British distiller has been holding discussions with potential advisers as it weighs possibilities including a sale of part or all of the club, the people said. Diageo owns the team through its Indian unit,
United Spirits Ltd
., and may seek a valuation of as much as $2 billion, the people said.
No decision is final and they may decide against selling the team, the people said, asking not to be named as the details are private.
A spokesperson for Diageo declined to comment. A representative for
United Spirits
didn't respond to requests for comments outside normal business hours.
The discussions come at a time when India's health ministry has been pushing to ban promotion of tobacco and alcohol brands in the IPL, and stop indirect promotion of other unhealthy goods by sports personalities.
Explicit advertising of tobacco and liquor products is prohibited in India, but firms such as Diageo have promoted other products such as soda using top cricketers.
One of the founding teams of the IPL, RCB was initially acquired by Vijay Mallya, a beer tycoon whose
Kingfisher Airlines Ltd
. folded in 2012 after failing to pay creditors. Diageo eventually took over RCB after buying Mallya's spirits business.
RCB recently won the IPL for the first time. The team's biggest star is
Virat Kohli
, who has one of the largest social media followings in the world for an athlete.
The IPL's surging valuations have made team ownership one of the most sought-after assets in sports. A sale could set a benchmark for future deals in what is now one of the world's fastest-growing sports leagues.
The IPL has evolved into a global entertainment and advertising behemoth, rivaling the National Football League and the English
Premier
League in commercial scale. The league's short, three-hour matches draw hundreds of millions of viewers across India and globally.
In the US, Diageo's largest market, tariffs and a consumer slowdown have weighed on premium liquor sales. A divestment could unlock capital at a time when the company is streamlining operations and reassessing non-core assets globally.

Gautam Gambhir's lengthy animated chats with Yashasvi Jaiswal after India A flop grab attention at training

Yashasvi Jaiswal was among the seven senior team players who were sent early to England in preparations for the five-match Test series. Having never batted in England before, it was a great call by the BCCI selectors to include the youngster, who impressed in the recent Australia tour, in the India A series against the England Lions. But it turned out to be an unfavourable outing for the left-handed opener. In four innings against the Lions, Jaiswal scored 24, 64, 17 and 5, thus capping off a poor campaign in the tour games. What added to his woes was that India A captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is also part of the senior squad, albeit as a backup opener, scored successive fifties in the two matches, while fellow regular opener KL Rahul scored a century and a fifty in the only India A match he played. According to a report in RevSportz, on Wednesday, India head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having animated chats with Jaiswal during the team's training session in Kent, where they will play an intra-squad game against India A, starting Friday. Not just one, but twice was Gambhir seen having lengthy discussions with Jaiswal, who also spent considerable time at the nets facing every variety of delivery. While the report did not confirm the exact discussions, it hinted that the chat was largely around his batting and where he could improve and thus adjust to the conditions in England. Jaiswal has made a stellar start to his Test career thus far, scoring 1798 runs in 19 matches, since his debut in 2023. It comprised four centuries and 10 fifties with an average of 52.88. His best performance thus far came against England at home, where he smashed 712 runs in nine innings, with two tons and three half-centuries. Jaiswal will be the player to watch in the intra-squad match, which will be India's only practice game before the England series. According to a report in the PTI, Gambhir has pushed for a "closed door" intra-squad match "to prevent the opposition from getting any ideas on the tactical front, emulating a long-established practice among European football clubs." The Indian team management had done the same during the tour of Australia last November, with BCCI having instructed the WACA officials in Perth to bat fans and media from entering the venue during the practice game.

Renault confirms launch of strong hybrid Duster and Boreal for India in 2026

Renault has officially confirmed the launch of its next-generation Duster SUV and its seven-seater sibling, the Boreal, for the Indian market. Both models will be built on the CMF-B platform, developed in collaboration with Nissan, and are slated to hit Indian roads in early 2026. The new-gen Duster will arrive first, with the larger Boreal (based on the globally sold Dacia Bigster) following later in the year. While initial variants will feature petrol and turbo-petrol powertrains, strong hybrid options will be introduced within 6 to 12 months after the launch. Production for the India-spec models is set to commence at the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai this September. In line with global trends and emission norms, diesel engines will not be offered. Globally, the Duster hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.2 kWh battery, delivering a combined 140 bhp. It features an electric automatic gearbox, offering up to 80% pure electric drive in urban settings. The Boreal hybrid variant, known as the Dacia Bigster internationally, is expected to feature a 1.4 kWh battery, producing a total output of 153 bhp, with a 107 bhp petrol engine and a 51 bhp electric motor. Additionally, Renault is evaluating the possibility of CNG-powered variants of both the Duster and Boreal, aligning with India's growing interest in alternative fuel options. As the company continues its work on a dedicated EV, the emphasis for now will be on strong hybrids and CNG models tailored for India's evolving fuel landscape.

Mood turns sombre at Bombay House after Air India Dreamliner crash

Grief hung heavy over Bombay House, Tata Group's iconic headquarters, after a London-bound Air India Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday — one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history. The mood inside the building, usually abuzz with activity, was subdued as news trickled in of the tragedy involving the airline the group had reacquired just over two years ago. Tata Group, which took back the reins of Air India in January 2022, moved quickly to activate its crisis response and emergency protocols, a group source said. 'Everyone is shaken — the mood is grim,' said an executive. The crash has dealt a blow to the conglomerate's efforts to turn around Air India, especially following its merger with Vistara in 2024. Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran rushed to Ahmedabad on Wednesday and met Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel to assess the situation. 'An emergency centre has been activated and a support team set up for families seeking information,' Chandrasekaran said in a statement. Tata Sons, the group's holding company, holds a majority stake in Air India alongside Singapore Airlines. Tata Trusts Chairman and Tata Sons director Noel Naval Tata, who works out of Bombay House, also monitored developments, as several planned events were called off in the aftermath. The group was scheduled to unveil a new concept car from Jaguar Land Rover on Saturday at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The event will go ahead as planned, but without fanfare. A UK knighthood ceremony for Chandrasekaran, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed. For Tata Group, the tragedy is a double blow. Tata AIG General Insurance Company, part of the consortium that insured the aircraft, is expected to bear a portion of the financial liability. However, most of the risk is reinsured, limiting direct exposure. A source said the airline's insurance premiums are likely to rise next year when the policy comes up for renewal. The immediate focus remains on rescue operations and supporting the investigation, even as Tata executives assess the broader impact on the group's aviation strategy. The airline, founded by the Tatas, was nationalised in 1953 and reacquired in 2022 after the Narendra Modi government decided to privatise it.
