Gautam Gambhir's lengthy animated chats with Yashasvi Jaiswal after India A flop grab attention at training

Hindustan Times21 hours ago

Yashasvi Jaiswal was among the seven senior team players who were sent early to England in preparations for the five-match Test series. Having never batted in England before, it was a great call by the BCCI selectors to include the youngster, who impressed in the recent Australia tour, in the India A series against the England Lions. But it turned out to be an unfavourable outing for the left-handed opener.
In four innings against the Lions, Jaiswal scored 24, 64, 17 and 5, thus capping off a poor campaign in the tour games. What added to his woes was that India A captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is also part of the senior squad, albeit as a backup opener, scored successive fifties in the two matches, while fellow regular opener KL Rahul scored a century and a fifty in the only India A match he played.
According to a report in RevSportz, on Wednesday, India head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having animated chats with Jaiswal during the team's training session in Kent, where they will play an intra-squad game against India A, starting Friday.
Not just one, but twice was Gambhir seen having lengthy discussions with Jaiswal, who also spent considerable time at the nets facing every variety of delivery. While the report did not confirm the exact discussions, it hinted that the chat was largely around his batting and where he could improve and thus adjust to the conditions in England.
Jaiswal has made a stellar start to his Test career thus far, scoring 1798 runs in 19 matches, since his debut in 2023. It comprised four centuries and 10 fifties with an average of 52.88. His best performance thus far came against England at home, where he smashed 712 runs in nine innings, with two tons and three half-centuries.
Jaiswal will be the player to watch in the intra-squad match, which will be India's only practice game before the England series.
According to a report in the PTI, Gambhir has pushed for a "closed door" intra-squad match "to prevent the opposition from getting any ideas on the tactical front, emulating a long-established practice among European football clubs."
The Indian team management had done the same during the tour of Australia last November, with BCCI having instructed the WACA officials in Perth to bat fans and media from entering the venue during the practice game.

Indian Women's Hockey team gears up for crucial FIH Pro League matches in Europe

London, June 13 (UNI) The Indian Women's Hockey Team is set to kick off the second and final leg of the FIH Pro League 2024-25, facing Australia, Argentina, Belgium and China in the European leg. Currently ranked 6th with 9 points, the team will play Australia on June 14 and 15, and Argentina on June 17 and 18, at London's Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre. Talking about the upcoming matches, Indian Captain Salima Tete said, "Our aim is to play well and defeat the teams that are ranked above us in this leg of the FIH Pro League. To prepare for our matches, we have been recording our performances and reviewing them so we can not only improve upon our weaknesses but also know where we are doing well to continue upon those areas during our matches." After their London matches, the Indian team will head to Antwerp to face Belgium on June 21 and 22, followed by their final two FIH Pro League (Women) matches against China in Berlin on June 28 and 29. Meanwhile, the Indian Men's Hockey Team will face Australia in Antwerp on June 14 and 15. Ranked 5th with 15 points, the team is looking to bounce back against Australia and gain crucial points to stay in contention for the top three positions. Indian Men's Hockey Team Captain Harmanpreet Singh emphasized the importance of winning against Australia, saying, "A win against Australia will be very critical for us, as it will not only help us gain crucial points but also give the team a winning momentum. We've had a few close games in the last four matches, and while we have been on the losing end, we want to change that and get some wins under our belts." UNI BM

Hoping for the best but not losing sleep over Pro League results: Harendra

As the Indian women's hockey team gets ready for the European leg of the FIH Pro League, coach Harendra Singh hopes to finish high up on the table by the end of the month to have a shot at qualifying for the 2026 World Cup but is not losing sleep over it. 'Honestly, there are a lot of possible outcomes. With two host teams, Germany already qualified as last Pro League winner and teams like Argentina and Australia expected to get through the continental route, finishing among the top-five in the Pro League can give us a realistic chance. But there will be two more chances, the Asia Cup and the World Cup qualifier. 'We do not want to leave it till the end, but we are not taking any pressure on this tour either because then we don't do well. I want them to play free, play attacking and not bother with the result, there will be other competitions for that,' Harendra said in a pre-match interaction from London. India will face off against Australia in the first of its eight matches on Saturday, and Harendra is confident of his girls making good use of the learnings from their tour Down Under last month. India lost four of its five games on the tour, winning the final match by a solitary goal. 'The biggest learning from the Australia tour was seeing them play full press and how to handle it, stretching the opponent with counter control, resilience on the pitch specially in one-on-one situations and playing stick-to-stick hockey. 'But we need to be more alert in the Pro League and with more peripheral vision and fast hockey, I am sure we are capable of good results in the next four games,' he added. He also insisted that there were no fixed roles any more. 'Modern hockey is one goalkeeper and 10 players, there is no longer any particular position or role for a player. 'It has become all the more clear after the Australia tour, but for now, our biggest focus is on two departments, mainly because they are vital for results — goalkeeping and drag-flicking. 'We have been working with Simon Zijp for the former, we sent Deepika and Manisha Chauhan 10 days ahead to train with Toon Siepman, one of the best drag-flicking coaches in the world, and we have Taeke Taekema with us. 'We are also working on the PC combinations, with more focus on the injector and the stopper. Earlier there were 5-6 girls rotating, now it's down to three girls for these roles, we are working on the combinations. Our fitness levels have improved drastically, and the team is now 70-80 percent fit — we don't need to peak right now, the target is Asia Cup in September,' he declared.

Gautam Gambhir Flies Back Home From England. Reports Reveals Concerning Factor

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is returning home from England as his mother is in ICU, according to news agency PTI. Gambhir travelled to England before the members of the senior team in order to monitor how the junior side (India A) fares against England Lions in the 2-match unofficial Test series. On Friday, when India was set to play an intra-squad match for the series, the news agency claimed that Gambhir was returning to India due to a family emergency. Another such family matter had earlier prompted Gambhir to fly back home from Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The report said Gambhir had to fly back to attend to his mother, who suffered a heart attack and is currently in ICU in a New Delhi hospital. "Gautam's mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday and they have reached Delhi," news agency PTI quoted sources as saying on Friday. "Gautam's mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday and they have reached Delhi," the BCCI source informed. He will have assistance from other coaching staff such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Gambhir is expected to return to England in a week's time if everything goes well at his home. "His mother is showing signs of recovery although she is still in the ICU. In all likelihood, he will be back in the UK before the start of the opening Test (starting June 20) if all goes well.'
