Chris Ballard: Colts missed Samson Ebukam's physicality, energy, toughness

USA Today02-04-2025

Chris Ballard: Colts missed Samson Ebukam's physicality, energy, toughness Chris Ballard acknowledged uknowns with Samson Ebukam's return from injury, but the defense greatly missed his presence in 2024.
On the outside, it was thought that Indianapolis Colts' defensive end Samson Ebukam could have been a cut candidate this offseason.
Moving on from Ebukam, who missed the 2024 season with an Achilles injury, would have saved the Colts $6.49 million in cap savings for the 2025 season.
But with Dayo Odeyingbo leaving for Chicago in free agency, GM Chris Ballard didn't want to lose another potential key contributor in the defensive end room. In 2023 with the Colts, Ebukam tallied 48 pressures, according to PFF, and 9.5 sacks, which led the team.
As Ballard acknowledged recently, however, there is an unknown when it comes to what to expect from Ebukam this season. Achilles injuries can often take a full year from the point a player returns to action for them to regain their previous form.
"It's a concern, absolutely," Ballard said of Ebukam coming off the Achilles' injury via the team site. "But when you know who the kid is and what he stands for and the effort he puts into everything, I'm willing to make that bet. We missed his physicality. Undeniably, we missed what Samson brought a year ago."
That physicality that Ebukam brings goes beyond impacting the game as a pass rusher, but at defensive end that play style helps to set edges in the running game, which can then funnel the ball carrier back towards the middle.
Odeyingbo led the Colts in pressures last season and played 745 defensive snaps. That's a lot of production and playing time to replace. Likely, no one player is going to make up for that, but it'll be a group effort.
Also helping the Colts' defensive front out from a production standpoint should be the addition of Lou Anarumo and his defensive scheme.
One of the reasons that the Colts ranked in the bottom third in sacks and pressure rate in 2024 was that opposing offenses picked the defense apart with the quick passing game, making it difficult for the front to get home. Anarumo's more aggressive defense would create more opportunities to get home.
"Whether he's a 10-sack guy again or not, I can't judge that," added Ballard about Ebukam. "But in terms of energy, toughness and what he brings every day, absolutely I think he could be that."

Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream

Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things have not quite gone the way the Chicago Sky had hoped here in the 2025 WNBA season, as the team entered Friday's matchup in Atlanta at 2-6, facing the reaminder of their schedule without point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who is out with a torn ACL. Advertisement But playing against a very good Atlanta squad that has come together quickly after some major offseason upheaval--including bringing in star Brittney Griner--the Sky accomplished something in the second quarter that qualifies as a milestone for the team: For the first time in three games, Chicago held a lead. The play came with 6:32 to go in the second period and the Sky down, 23-22. Rachel Banham took a pass from Ariel Atkins and stepped into a 3-point try near the left break. It was true, and Chicago held the lead, 25-23. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) brings the ball up court in the first quarter against the New York Liberty at Barclays Center. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images It was a big moment considering the way the Sky's previous two games had started. On Saturday against the Fever, the Sky were tied at 2-2 with 8:59 to play but were down by 10 less than five minutes later on their way to a 79-52 blowout. Advertisement It was worse against the Liberty in the Sky's next game, an 85-66 romp. Chicago trailed, 12-0, with 5:49 to go in the first period before the team even managed a point. The Sky's last lead came when they beat Dallas, 94-83, on May 31. The good news for Chicago was that, heading into halftime in Atlanta, despite a late push from the Dream, the Sky still held the lead, 39-38, behind eight points each from frontcourt sophomores Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Chicago Sky Announce Change After Two Straight Losses

Chicago Sky Announce Change After Two Straight Losses originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky now own a 2-6 record during the 2025 WNBA season after Tuesday's 85 to 66 loss to the New York Liberty. Advertisement Tuesday's defeat marked the second consecutive game that the Sky lost by 19 points or more, and the fifth time they have lost by 13 or more points this season. In last Saturday's defeat against the Indiana Fever, the Sky lost 15-year veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot for the season. She suffered a torn ACL just under five minutes into the contest. On Tuesday, new Sky head coach Tyler Marsh replaced Vandersloot in the starting lineup with Rachel Banham, a nine-year veteran who played a season-high 27 minutes in the loss. Chicago Sky guard Kia Nurse (11).Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Banham mustered just three points and five assists on 1-for-6 shooting in the defeat. Backup guard Kia Nurse played 20 minutes off the bench and scored eight points on 3-for-6 shooting. Advertisement Before Friday's game against the 6-3 Atlanta Dream, the Sky announced that they had made a change to their starting lineup. Instead of starting Banham, Marsh opted for Nurse. "our starting 5️⃣ tonight," the Sky announced. Nurse is a seven-year veteran who has made stops with the Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks. This season for the Sky, she is contributing 7.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. After starting the first seven games of the 2025 campaign, Nurse came off the bench for one game against the Liberty. However, she is back in the starting lineup for Friday's Commissioner's Cup contest against the Dream. Advertisement Chicago will look to move up in the Eastern Conference standings with a win against Atlanta on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.
