David Healy backs Linfield to turn tie around against Shelbourne

Linfield manager David Healy believes that his side can find an extra gear to turn the tie around when they take on Shelbourne in Wednesday's second-leg of their Champions League first-round qualifier. Shelbourne take a narrow 1-0 lead going into the game at Windsor Park, thanks to Mipo Odubeko's 58th-minute goal at Tolka Park a week ago. Shels dominated possession in Dublin but were unable to put the tie beyond Linfield and the tie remains very much in the balance. With Shelbourne already midway through the League of Ireland Premier Division campaign and the NIFL Premiership not getting underway until August, Shels looked the sharper of the two side but Healy is hoping that home advantage can be a leveller this time around. "With the way the draw worked out, and the fitness levels Shels had, we had to give up something last week," Healy said. "We worked on that. We had to give up a little on the wide areas. There are things we can improve on, certainly in possession. We can't be sloppy in possession when we do have the ball. At times last week we did all the hard work off the ball, and when we got it, we gave it away cheapy and didn't create opportunities. "You can improve in a week. We'll probably change one or two things, the players will be aware of that. "All teams have strengths. Shels have good players and are neat and tidy on the ball. I don't think our strengths were shown last week on the ball. "Shelbourne will be excited by the playing surface. We didn't have enough possession last week to go and hurt Shels. Hopefully tomorrow, with the energy, another week's training, and strong support behind us, I can see a much-improved performance in us. "We have a strong record at Windsor Park and the players believe there is an opportunity." Healy can welcome back former Dundalk midfielder Chris Shields who missed the first game through suspension. Shields has a wealth of experience when it comes to European ties and he could offer Linfield an extra dimension in midfield, but Healy is being coy as to whether or not he will start. "We underperformed with the ball last week," the Linfield boss said. "Our work ethic and organisation was there, but if we are better on the ball tomorrow night with the players that we have, Chris being back and involved – I've not decided if he is starting or not – we will be better. "I have no doubt we will be better in possession. "A second goal for Shels would have made it really difficult, but with the performance levels, the attitude, and most importantly speaking to the players after the game, and over the last few days, there is huge belief that we can build on that performance. "It would be brilliant if we did score in the first 10, 15 minutes and the tie is level, but we don't need to. The most important thing is we build into the game. "I have no doubt, if and when we do take the lead tomorrow night, the electricity and energy around this place becomes important as the players will be fuelled by the belief they can win the tie."

Henderson on roles Keith Andrews and Caoimhin Kelleher played in Brentford move

Jordan Henderson has hailed new Brentford boss Keith Andrews for making his decision to the Premier League side an 'easy' one. The former Liverpool midfielder is also looking forward to linking up once again with his ex-Anfield pal Caoimhin Kelleher, who completed his switch earlier this summer. Henderson signed on the dotted line after Ajax Amsterdam agreed to terminate his contract a year early. And he told the club's official website: 'I'm delighted that I'm here; I'm very excited to get started and get going. 'I've always had huge admiration for the club and what they've achieved over the last few years, in particular, how they've grown as a club. 'I've been told how organised and well-run the club is, it's very family-oriented, which I think is very important.' Henderson won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup among a dazzling array of honours at Liverpool, before his controversial move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq two years ago. He spent just six months there before signing for Ajax. As for the role Andrews and Kelleher played in his decision to move to Brentford, the 84-time capped England midfielder said: 'When I spoke to Phil Giles (director of football), Lee Dykes (technical director) and Keith, I just had a really good feeling about everything. 'As soon as I had that conversation, it was clear for me that I wanted to come here and it was an easy decision in the end. 'When I spoke to Keith a few times, he was very good and very honest, and he's excited to get started as well. 'He was another big reason why I wanted to come and try to help the club keep moving forward.' Kelleher is one of three former Liverpool teammates at Brentford, along with Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho. The Corkman's return to training has been delayed after his season extended into June with Ireland. Henderson said: 'Caoimhín isn't in yet, but I've spoken to Sepp and Fáb a bit, along with the rest of the lads. It's nice to have a few familiar faces, for sure. 'They're great lads that I got on really well with at Liverpool, so that's been nice for us to settle in.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Shelbourne poised to keep Champions League ambitions on track but Linfield quietly confident

Champions League first-round qualifier, second-leg: Linfield v Shelbourne, Windsor Park, Wednesday, 7.45pm (Shelbourne lead 1-0 on aggregate) For anyone presuming they can watch the return meeting of this absorbing all-Ireland Champions League qualifier on RTÉ2, after the national broadcaster showed the first-leg from Tolka Park last Wednesday, they will instead be welcomed by coverage of Italy v Norway in the women's Euros quarter-final. What a pity. Surely, a rare European meeting between the League of Ireland and NIFL champions deserves to be platformed by RTÉ. Linfield escaped Dublin last week with a respectable 1-0 loss, having curtailed Shelbourne to Mipo Odubeko's 58th-minute strike despite 18 attempts on goal. It was the relaxed, post-match demeanour of Linfield manager David Healy that should concern the 1,800 Shelbourne fans making their way north for this lucrative European game. Both clubs will turn a profit from Uefa prize money this season but an additional €750,000 goes to the team that progresses to the second round. Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ await, with the losers redirected to a Conference League qualifier, most likely against Malta's Hamrun Spartans. Considering the missed opportunities by Evan Caffrey and Sean Boyd in particular last week, Healy sounded quietly confident in turning over their Dublin counterparts. There is a number of reasons why Linfield will believe they can slow the one-way traffic on their return to Windsor Park. One being the return of former Dundalk midfielder Chris Shields from suspension. Linfield manager David Healy with Matthew Orr after their first-leg loss at Tolka Park last week. Photograph: Damien Eagers/PA 'We will be sensible in our set up and aim to press them,' said Healy. It is a special occasion for Healy as he takes charge of his local club for a 500th time. 'On a personal level, to manage 500 games is a milestone – certainly at this football club,' he said. 'I grew up in Killyleagh, no one knows it well, but I managed to have a career in football. I grew up supporting Northern Ireland, Man United and Rangers with Linfield being my local club. 'Although I never got the opportunity to play for Linfield, I had the privilege and pleasure to manage the football club. It has been an incredible journey.' If Shelbourne can shut out all the external noise, they are better equipped to engineer a comfortable victory with their British midfield duo Harry Wood and Kerr McInroy set to dominate possession. Any concerns about O'Brien stepping into the manager seat, having served as Damien Duff 's number two for three and a half seasons, were allayed by his inspirational triple substitution last week. Boyd arrived to instantly combine with Odubeko for the winner. That may convince O'Brien to start his two tall forwards from the off.
