Colombia denounces mass deportation of citizens from Ecuador
Colombia's Foreign Ministry criticized Ecuador for deporting large numbers of Colombian citizens without a formal protocol, describing it as a "unfriendly gesture," while Quito said the removals followed legal procedures and upheld human rights standards. On Thursday, the Colombian government reported that authorities in the neighboring country had announced plans to deport Colombians currently imprisoned in various Ecuadorian penitentiaries. "Through diplomatic channels, Colombia has formally lodged its strongest protest against the Ecuadorian government for this unfriendly act, and is currently evaluating appropriate measures in response," the Foreign Ministry said Friday night. The ministry emphasized that Ecuador had taken this action "without implementing any protocol to guarantee the safe, orderly, and respectful transfer of detainees, in line with their human rights." Ecuador's Foreign Ministry said in a statement it had notified Colombia via diplomatic channels of individual deportation proceedings starting July 8, and that the process followed the country's legal framework. Authorities underscored their commitment to due process, citing the issuance of individual rulings and judicial release orders. "Ecuador therefore rejects claims of mass deportations," the ministry said. Meanwhile, Radio Caracol reported that Amilcar Pantoja, mayor of the Colombian border town of Ipiales, confirmed that around 700 Colombian detainees were being sent across the binational bridge without prior official notice.

Syrian delegation met with Israeli officials in Paris
A Syrian delegation, composed of officials from the Foreign Ministry and Intelligence Services, met with Israeli officials in Paris during a U.S.-mediated meeting to discuss recent security developments and efforts to contain the escalation in southern Syria, Reuters reported Saturday, citing a diplomatic source interviewed by Syria's state-run Ekhbariya TV. According to Reuters, the Syrian delegation rejected any 'illegitimate' foreign presence on Syrian territory. While the meeting did not result in any final agreement, the parties agreed to hold further discussions in the coming days to evaluate steps for maintaining stability in southern Syria. French and Syrian foreign ministers Jean-Noel Barrot and Assaad al-Chibani, along with U.S. envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, also met Friday in Paris to discuss the situation in the country. Syria, now governed by the transitional authorities led by Islamist Ahmad al-Sharaa — who took power following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 — continues to experience frequent intercommunal violence. The most recent clashes between Druze and Sunni Bedouin communities left more than 1,300 people dead between July 13 and 20 in the south. Relations between the transitional government and various minority groups remain a concern for parts of the international community.

Brazil 'welcomes' France's announcement recognizing the State of Palestine
Brazil 'welcomes the announcement' of France's recognition of the State of Palestine and 'urges all other nations that have not yet done so' to follow suit, the Foreign Ministry said Friday. 'The recognition of the Palestinian state by a growing number of countries [...] helps address the aspirations for peace in the region, as well as the freedom and self-determination of the Palestinian people,' the ministry added in a statement. President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday France's official recognition of the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York. Brazil has recognized the State of Palestine since 2010 and supports a 'two-state solution' to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Brazil's left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has accused Israel of 'genocide' in the Gaza Strip, a besieged, starving, and devastated Palestinian territory following 21 months of war triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Islamist Hamas movement on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The Brazilian government announced this week its intention to join a legal action before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) initiated by South Africa, accusing Israel of committing 'genocide' in Gaza. At least 142 countries already recognize or plan to recognize the State of Palestine, according to a count by AFP. Several states have made this decision following the outbreak of the current war in the Gaza Strip.
