NHL releases the 2025-26 schedule, the last 82-game season before new CBA increases it to 84
The league's 32 teams will combine to play 1,312 games between Oct. 7 and April 16 with the playoffs to run from the following weekend through much of June. Beginning in 2026-27, there will be 1,344 games — the most in NHL history.
Alex Ovechkin begins his 21st season on Oct. 8 when he and the Washington Capitals host Boston. Ovechkin is at 897 career goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky's record and can add to his total at age 40.
It's even plausible Ovechkin gets No. 900 in the same arena on Long Island in which he scored his 895th to pass Gretzky. The Capitals visit the New York Islanders in their second game on Oct. 11, before playing the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 12.
After raising their second consecutive Stanley Cup banner on opening night Oct. 7 against Chicago, the back-to-back defending champion Florida Panthers continue their threepeat bid two days later when they host Philadelphia.
Utah plays its first game as the Mammoth on Oct. 9 at Colorado. They were known as the Utah Hockey Club during the first year in Salt Lake City after relocating from Arizona.
For the first time in more than a decade, the league is pausing in the winter to send players to the Olympics. The Milan break runs from Feb. 6-24, with play resuming Feb. 25.
The NHL's last participation in the Games was 2014 in Sochi, though the new CBA provides for players to also go in 2030, pending another deal with the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

In what may have been the best race of her career, Katie Ledecky won an 800m freestyle that lived up to the hype, becoming the first swimmer to win a seventh world title in one event. Ledecky swam 8:05.62 to beat Australian Lani Pallister (8:05.98) and Canadian Summer McIntosh (8:07.29) in a showdown among the three fastest women in history in the event. Ledecky rallied from second place at 700 meters -- just .14 behind McIntosh -- then held off the charging Pallister in a championship record time. It's her 23 world title (second to Michael Phelps' 26) and 30th world medal (second to Phelps' 33). Of the 42 women's and men's events on the world championships program, the women's 50m fly was the only one the U.S. had never won. The U.S. has won at least one medal in all 16 women's events held so far at these worlds. There are four women's finals left on Sunday. Katie Ledecky wins seventh consecutive world title in 800 freestyle
Katie Ledecky stubbornly refused to give up her 800-meter freestyle crown Saturday at the world championships in Singapore, winning that race for a seventh consecutive time and fending off Canada's Summer McIntosh who led a field of talented young, would-be usurpers. When the Maryland native triumphantly touched the wall first, she earned her seventh consecutive 800 free title in world meets dating back to 2013. The niece of New York Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky has also been dominating the 800 free at the Olympics, having won gold in this race at the 2012 games in London, 2016 in Rio, 2021 in Tokyo and last summer near Paris. She's the only woman to win the same individual event at four Olympics, in any sport. The only other swimmer to pull off such a four-peat was American legend Michael Phelps, who took the 200 individual medley in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. At age 28, Ledecky was the field's oldest swimmer and she outdueled her youngest and most fierce competitor, the 18-year-old Toronto native McIntosh. Ledecky's air of 800 invincibility was dented last year when a 17-year-old McIntosh beat the American at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 8. The Canadian prodigy opted against swimming in the 800 in France to concentrate on other events. She took gold in the 200 butterfly, 200 Individual Medley and 400 Individual Medley to become one of the breakout stars of last summer. If McIntosh takes on the 800 free in Los Angeles, Saturday's race was a tantalizing preview of what could be in store for 2028.

When Red Sox ‘really felt like' they were ‘going to win' in walkoff victory
BOSTON — Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story fired a perfect strike to catcher Carlos Narváez to cut down Astros' Chas McCormick at the plate for the second out of the 10th inning and keep the game tied. Roman Anthony then delivered a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the inning to lead the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over Houston at Fenway Park on Friday. Anthony's hit won it but Story preventing McCormick, the automatic extra-inning runner, from scoring proved to be the most pivotal moment in Boston's victory. 'It's never done until you get the job done, right?' Story said. 'But you definitely feel like, 'All right. Momentum's on our side.' Then you have to lock in for that last out. Once we retired the side there, it really felt like we were going to win the game.' The Red Sox played the infield in with a runner at third and one out. Story ranged to his left, fielded Mauricio Dubón's 79.9 mph ground ball cleanly and made a three-quarter throw to the exact spot where Narváez could easily apply the tag on McCormick. 'The ball took a nice hop for me even though I was kind of going to my left,' Story said. 'Those are plays that we practice a lot. And we throw it like that a lot just for times like that. So using my athleticism and trusting that, trusting the work we do pregame.' Manager Alex Cora added, 'Great jump and great throw to the plate. ... He's been amazing. He's been really good. Moving better. His arm is playing again. So he's a good defender.' Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert completed the scoreless top of the 10th inning by getting Jeremy Peña to fly out to left field. 'When they didn't score, I was like, 'We better win this one,' Cora said. 'Especially where they were in the lineup. Ceddanne (Rafaela) bunted him over and Roman put a good swing.'
