PM Anwar: Imported fruits like apples, oranges to be exempt from SST hike
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision was made after taking into account concerns raised by the public, especially from lower-income groups.
'Since there are ongoing public concerns on the matter, we (the Cabinet) have agreed to provide some relaxations in that imported fruits are still taxed but exemptions given to apple and oranges,' he said in his speech at the Kota Madani groundbreaking ceremony here today.

Army hails revised incentive scheme as boost for personnel performance
KUALA TERENGGANU: The armed forces have welcomed the enhancement of the performance-based incentive payments (BIPs) system announced yesterday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Army deputy chief Lieutenant-General Datuk Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim said the incentive would serve as both encouragement and a benchmark for improving the performance of army personnel. "This is a positive step. The incentive can also act as a catalyst for personnel to progress to higher levels and to develop the social skills essential for military service in line with current needs," he told reporters after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Rapid Deployment Force Basic Course (APAC) Series 2/2025 at Dataran Drawbridge here today. Anwar had announced that the revised scheme would be extended to other ranks, namely Sergeant Equivalent (Grade Z4) and Staff Sergeant Equivalent (Grade Z5), while the qualifying period for BIP had been reduced from six years to four years. The revision is expected to benefit 3,789 personnel, with an estimated annual financial implication of RM6.47 million. Meanwhile, 131 participants, comprising male and female personnel of the 10th Parachute Brigade — including seven officers — successfully completed the six-week course, which began on July 13. Also present were 512 Territorial Army (Askar Wataniah) Commander Brigadier General Tengku Sri Temenggong Raja Tengku Baharuddin Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, 10th Parachute Brigade Commander Khairul Anwar Soib, and Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin.

Govt considers stronger laws to tackle bullying cases in Malaysia
KUCHING: The government is prepared to review existing laws to better address bullying cases, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She clarified that while amending laws falls outside her ministry's jurisdiction, she is ready to engage with relevant authorities. 'There may not be a need to enact a new law, but recent bullying cases could inspire improvements to current legislation,' she told reporters after attending the Gempak Inspirasi @ Sepagi Bersama PPWS 2025 Programme. Nancy confirmed the issue will be raised in the upcoming Cabinet meeting. Her remarks follow calls from the Anti-Bullying Act Movement (GAB) for a dedicated law to comprehensively tackle bullying. GAB Secretariat chairman Wan Azliana Wan Adnan previously stated that drafting for the proposed act began in 2022 but has seen little progress. Nancy noted that existing laws, including the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 and Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act 2025, already cover bullying. Justice will prevail in Zara Qairina case, reaffirms Anwar
LARUT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that those responsible for the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir will be brought to justice, stressing that no individual involved will be allowed to escape accountability. In this regard, Anwar advised certain parties not to manipulate the case in ways that create negative perceptions or resort to insulting specific individuals. "... the government has said the police are investigating, and I have made it clear that it doesn't matter who (is involved), they will be investigated," he said when officiating the Madani Dairy Entrepreneurs Carnival themed "Driving Modern Agricultural Revolution, Generating People's Economy" at the Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex here today. Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Meanwhile, Anwar said the government will continue efforts to protect the vulnerable, including fishermen and farmers. "That is why every Friday before prayers, I eat at small eateries, because I want to meet the people, I want to ask, is everything okay, do you have enough? "I don't want to wait until election campaigns to visit eateries … I do this every week," he said. After the event, Anwar also took time to inspect the construction of the new road from Kamunting to Anak Kurau, Larut Matang Selama Phase Two, implemented under the Rural Roads Programme (JALB) of Rural and Regional Development Ministry. The project, approved in 2016 with a total cost of RM91 million, is being carried out by the Public Works Department through conventional consultancy, involving the construction of a 6.6-kilometre new road. It is expected to benefit more than 5,000 residents in the surrounding areas and have a positive impact on agriculture and plantation enterprises along the route, besides improving accessibility and stimulating local economic growth. To date, the project, which is scheduled for full completion on Aug 15, 2026, has achieved 70.5 per cent progress compared to the original 62.6 per cent, ahead of schedule by 59 days.
