Azam: MACC investigation into illegal durian farms in Raub first opened in 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is already investigating the issue of illegal durian farms in Raub, Pahang.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission had first opened an investigation into the matter four years ago.
"I was asked whether the MACC has opened an investigation paper regarding the issue in Raub, and the answer is yes — we had previously opened a similar investigation in 2021. This is a continuation of that.
"Regarding the recent developments, I have instructed the Pahang MACC to proceed with the investigation," he told reporters after attending the 11th Certified Integrity Officer Convocation Ceremony 2025, held at the World Trade Centre, here.

Sukuk fund misuse probe to wrap up soon

Top of the class: Azam (second from right) with top graduates (from left) Nor Hazira Mohamad Hasri, Nurarina Yuslynda Usuf and Tengku Nur Diyana Syamimi Tengku Zolnurin at the MACC Law Enforcement Accredited Programme convocation ceremony in Bangi. — Bernama BANGI: The investigation regarding alleged misuse of sukuk funds in a highway project in the Klang Valley is expected to be completed within a month or two, says Tan Sri Azam Baki. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said the length of time is needed to enable the investigation team to obtain complete information. 'We need to analyse several documents including financial statements. 'So far, we have recorded the statements of 53 witnesses to assist with the investigation,' he said after attending the MACC Law Enforcement Accredited Programme convocation yesterday. Azam said more witnesses will be called up to assist with the investigation. Azam had said the highway concessionaire is a key witness in the investigation. Earlier reports stated that 45 people who had given statements were recalled to provide more information. On June 3, the MACC disclosed that it had seized assets worth around RM143mil concerning the case. Investigators are also tracing luxury vehicles and properties linked to the Tan Sri, including assets in London and Switzerland. On another matter, Azam said at least two people are expected to be charged in connection with a video clip of an alleged corruption scandal involving a Sabah assemblyman. He said he will make the announcement of the prosecution soon. It was reported that the MACC has completed the investigation paper regarding the case. According to a source, the investigation paper was sent to the prosecution for review two weeks ago. Several video recordings have gone viral, allegedly showing conversations between certain people and several Sabah lawmakers regarding the issue of mineral licensing in the state. Meanwhile, the statement recording of a Tan Sri had resumed yesterday at his residence following a six-hour session on Wednesday, he added. A white Toyota Vios carrying MACC officers was seen entering the individual's residence at 8.45am in Bandar Tasik Selatan here while the MACC's Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) arrived at the premises at 10.50am yesterday. The ACTS officers were seen armed with firearms. Four vehicles were seen entering the property, including two white vans, a Nissan Grand Livina and a Honda City. One of the entrances to the property was also sealed by auxiliary police from a private company, with cones and barriers placed at the gate. Media personnel were prevented from approaching the area.

RM3.5bil in assets and funds seized by MACC since 2020

BANGI: Some RM3.5bil in assets and funds were seized by graft busters since 2020, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He said there had been 34,819 reports from 2020 to April this year. 'From the reports received, 5,145 investigation papers were opened while 5,703 individuals were detained. 'Of those detained, 2,479 have been charged and 1,274 were found guilty by the courts. 'We also seized some RM3.5bil in assets and funds and performed forfeiture of RM27.8bil of assets and properties during the five-year period,' he said during the MACC Law Enforcement Accreditation Programme convocation ceremony yesterday. In his speech, Azam stressed on the importance of the role played by the graduates in anti-corruption enforcement. 'You are not only expected to be corruption-free but you have the responsibility to create more awareness and understanding towards the importance of combating corruption,' he said. Azam said the MACC will not compromise in taking action against any individual, including its own officers, if they are involved in corrupt activities. 'Be the unsung hero who is firm in holding on to your principle. Integrity is priceless and must be preserved,' he said. Later at a press conference, Azam said the length of investigations for high profile graft cases had been shortened by enhancing the skills of officers and adoption of new technology. 'In the past, a high-profile case could take us up to one-and-a-half years to complete the investigation paper but now, we can do so within six months,' he said. 'This is a credit to our approach, which focusses on equipping our officers with skills and the use of latest technology.' Despite MACC having to deal with more than 30,000 reports since 2020, Azam pointed out that increasing the MACC workforce is not an answer to dealing with the situation. 'I don't see how adding a large number of MACC officers is the solution to effectively combat corruption in this country. 'The most important thing is our approach. 'For example, about 10 years ago, we would need to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. 'But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses,' he said. Azam also said the MACC would collaborate with various parties, especially in technical and forensic accounting. 'For example, we worked with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants to assist in asset tracing and forensic accounting. 'We also form international cooperation to assist with our investigations,' he added. Azam said the public could expect announcements soon of several high-profile cases being brought to court, which is proof of how quickly MACC is now able to conclude its investigations.
