A local early-stage venture capital firm has added a new venture partner with ties to Chicago's tech scene as it aims to find the Midwest's next unicorn.

Coon's most recent venture, Avail, a Chicago startup he co-founded in 2012 and for which he served as CEO, was acquired by Realtor.com in 2020 after it raised $10 million and served more than a million landlords and renters. The platform provided tools and resources to improve the landlord-tenant relationship.
Coon thinks his experience launching and scaling a startup and raising capital will add a fresh perspective to an early-stage venture firm focused on finding startups headquartered in the Midwest.
M25 launched a $31.8 million fund in 2021 and has become one of the most active investors in the Chicago market, backing more than 50 startups in Chicagoland including Kin Insurance, Chowly and Continuum. M25 first launched nearly 10 years ago with a mission to support Midwest-headquartered startups.
Coon spoke with the Chicago Business Journal about why he decided to join the Midwest-focused firm.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
What made you want to switch to the other side of the table?
Now is the right time for me, both personally and professionally. I think on the personal front, have a couple of young kids, and so I see this as a way to be still be involved in the venture ecosystem but outside the founder/CEO chair.
And professionally it just seems like a really good match between the experience of going through all the different stages of growing a company, from literally writing the first line of code to selling and and sharing that news with our team and investors. Along that journey, I made a ton of mistakes, and so I really view this as an opportunity to help others in the M25 portfolio to avoid a lot of those mistakes and things we screwed up.
How do you think your experience in launching a startup in Chicago will serve you in evaluating where M25 should invest?
As a investor, there's three things that you've got to do really well: You've got to be able to raise capital from the limited partners. You've got to deploy and invest that capital. And you've got to support your portfolio companies.
With each of those three things, my experience growing and selling a company in Chicago will be helpful. I know firsthand: I had a number of advisors and investors who were former operators and those were my favorite and best investors as founder.
How do you think it will help when advising and talking to startups?
When we raised our last round, I got 168 no's before finally getting a yes. I think it will be helpful to have a former operator around to say and be able to identify holes in pitches and identify things that maybe even founders haven't thought about.

SPRINGFIELD — The city took an acre-sized parking lot at 90-120 Tapley St. by eminent domain in 2023, so it would have more parking for its public works headquarters next door. The city paid the property's owners $450,000. But that was inadequate compensation, according to a suit against the city filed this week in Hampden Superior Court by New Valley Bank & Trust Co. The bank says the city's eminent domain taking to expand the Richard Neal Municipal Operations Center at 70 Tapley St. made the loading docks at the warehouse for 90-120 Tapley inaccessible, costing its New York City-based owners a tenant and knocking $1.6 million from the property's estimated value. The land and warehouse at 90-120 Tapley was estimated to be worth $4.4 million to $4.7 million, according to the suit. The owners, New York City-headquartered Top Rock Holdings, have been unable to find a new tenant after a business — L & W Supply Co., which needed a showroom and warehouse for building supplies — backed out of its lease. The warehouse remains unrented, according to the suit. It is offered for sale or lease, according to signs posted out front and in an online listing. The prices are not disclosed. Springfield-based New Valley Bank & Trust Co. lent the owners a $3.3 million mortgage on the property in March 2023, according to documents on file at the Hampden County Registry of Deeds. That's about six months before the city filed an order of taking on Sept. 18, 2023. In that document, the city explains its need for more space for vehicles, supplies and its operations center, as well as to maneuver vehicles used in snow removal, trash pickup and other municipal operations. Lawyers for the city and for the bank did not return calls and emails Wednesday. In eminent domain cases, property owners have the opportunity to accept payment under protest, reserving their right to go to court and seek more money. Allworth Financial, a registered investment advisor based in Folsom, Calif., with over $30 billion in client assets, has acquired Indianapolis-based sister firms Salzinger Sheaff Brock and Sheaff Brock Investment Advisors. The two firms manage more than $1.5 billion in combined assets, working with high-net-worth individuals. The investment arm focuses on active investment management, which Allworth noted as an added capability for its advisors. The firm is also expanding its footprint in the Midwest. 'Combining our specialized investment strategies with Allworth's comprehensive wealth management approach creates a powerful platform that will benefit our clients for years to come,' Mark Salzinger, co-founder of Salzinger Sheaff Brock, said in a statement. Allworth offers investment management, tax strategy, estate planning, insurance and retirement plan services. The deal is the RIA's 42nd since 2018. In 2020, Allworth sold to private equity firm Lightyear Capital and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, Canada's largest single-profession pension plan. Parthenon Capital previously owned it. Compound Planning, a New York-based RIA with over $3 billion in client assets, has recruited eight advisors to grow its team to more than 50 advisors. The additions include a three-person team of owners at Moscow, Idaho-based Northstar Financial Management, who had previously managed $120 million in client assets. Firm founder Kaitlin Jones, sister Charlotte Jones and Mark Mooring will now be part of the rebranded Northstar Group at Compound Planning, which offers financial planning, portfolio management, tax services, and trust and estate administration. 'When we went looking for the perfect partner for our business, Compound Planning's integrated tax services immediately stood out,' Kaitlin Jones said in a statement. 'To us, tax preparation and planning should always be at the center of what we do, not some separate, disconnected experience.' Compound also added five advisors who had managed a combined $835 million in client assets. Denver-based Michelle Leichtner left Motley Fool Wealth Management to join Compound and has over 20 years of experience across RIAs, investment banks and hedge funds. Bethesda, Md.-based Hali London also left Motley Fool Wealth Management and has more than 30 years of experience in financial counseling and planning. Des Moines, Iowa-based Jan Shull joins after advising high-net-worth clients at Ameriprise and Edward Jones. Phoenix-based James Taylor came from Mercer Advisors, where he worked in insurance and planning for retirees, business owners and federal employees. Morrison, Colo.-based Brandon Wyand joined from Vanguard and had prior roles with Personal Capital and Empower Advisory Group. Compound has added 17 advisors in 2025, after adding 30 total advisors and doubling its AUM in 2024. Focus Financial Partners has acquired a Fairfax, Va.-based RIA with $239 million in client assets in a deal expected to close in the third quarter of 2025. The mega-RIA's Focus Partner Wealth division, which was rebranded in January 2025, will add David Wealth Management. It's the second deal for the unit since announcing that The Colony Group and Buckingham Strategic Wealth would start operating under the unified Focus Partners Wealth brand. David Wealth, which will now operate as Focus Partners Wealth, was founded by Jim David in 2012 and is focused on Washington D.C.-area clients. New York-based Focus Partners Wealth CEO Adam Birenbaum said in a statement that 'M&A remains a key strategic priority' for the firm. Focus Partners Wealth acquired Churchill Management Corporation in May. In addition to rebranding its RIA groups, Focus rebranded Buckingham Strategic Partners, its turnkey asset management platform, to Focus Partners Advisor Solutions. Apella Wealth, a West Hartford, Conn.-based RIA with over $6 billion in assets under management, has acquired Johnston, Iowa-based Iron Horse Wealth Management. Iron Horse founder and President Dennis Markway will join Apella as regional director in the Midwest, along with his team of five, which manages $574 million in client assets. 'This partnership represents a significant milestone in Apella's geographic expansion as we establish our first Midwest-based team,' Jim Scanlan, president of Apella, said in a statement. The deal is Apella's 22nd overall, and 11th since getting investment from Wealth Partners Capital Group in September 2021. Four financial advisors who had previously overseen a combined $220 million in advisory, brokerage and retirement plan assets have left Thrivent Investment Management to join LPL's RIA affiliate Strategic Wealth Group. As part of Strategic Wealth, the four advisors are now on LPL's broker/dealer, RIA and custodial platforms. Mike Trudeau, Matt Merrick, Ben Ollila and Ben Prchal will be based in Lino Lakes, Minn., near Minneapolis. Trudeau, Merrick and Ollila have worked together since 2009; Prchal started in the financial industry in 2021. The left Thrivent to join LPL's RIA affiliate group to be 'free from corporate mandates and proprietary investments,' according to an announcement. 'By going independent with Strategic Wealth Group and LPL, we will be able to provide a holistic and tailored experience for each client, using products and services that make sense for their long- and short-term goals,' Trudeau said.
