Akali-AAP-Congress face-off: Punjab Assembly descends into chaos
Participating in a debate on the concluding day of the special session of the Punjab Assembly here, Cheema lashed out at the previous SAD-BJP and Congress governments, accusing them of failing to wipe out the scourge of drugs.
Cheema credited the Bhagwant Mann government with taking such efforts as 55,000 government jobs and sports event 'khedan watan Punjab diyan' to wean away the youth from drugs.
He also lauded the state government's anti-drug drive, 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh.'
After Cheema sought permission from Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rori to play old videos of some Congress leaders in which they had criticised Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Bajwa took an exception to it.
'Under what rules of the Vidhan Sabha, can it be allowed. Are you sitting in a picture hall? Talk some sense,' Bajwa said.
He said it was on his complaint that Cheema and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora were booked in Chandigarh for allegedly circulating a 'doctored video' he had posted in Majithia's case.
Bajwa said he also had criticised the action of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for being in 'utter violation' of the law when they went to Akali MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia's house.
Last month, Bikram Singh Majithia was booked in a disproportionate assets case.
Cheema said that when the Punjab Vigilance took action against Majithia, the Congress leaders came out in support of the Akali leader.
Later, noisy scenes were again witnessed when Akali MLA Manwinder Singh Giaspura accused Congress MLA Avtar Singh Junior of abusing him, leading to more heated arguments in the House.
The deputy speaker asked Junior if he used abusive language, to which the Congress MLA assented. 'Have you come here to abuse?' the deputy speaker then said to Junior. The AAP MLAs rose from their seats and sought action against Junior for using cuss word.
The deputy speaker assured everyone that he would take strict notice of it.
Later, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan got the records checked and found Junior guilty of using an objectionable word and said a resolution can be moved against Junior.
Sandhwan said Junior can seek an apology.
When Junior did not stand up to seek an apology, Congress leader Bajwa sought forgiveness on his behalf.
Earlier, Bajwa, while participating in the debate, emphasised that the nexus between police and drug smugglers must be shattered to wipe out the drug menace.
He alleged that there was no impact of the anti-drug drive on the ground, and that drugs could still be bought in the streets.

Revenue and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has lamented that the State government could not take the spree of welfare and developmental programmes introduced and implemented since the Congress took over the reins effectively to the people. The BRS indulged in hoodwinking the people through false propaganda during its 10-year rule and was continuing the same as the main Opposition party in the State. 'Our government is unable to explain to the people about the host of welfare schemes launched in the interests of poor and lower classes,' he said. The Minister made the remarks during a video conference with the district public relations officers on Tuesday. He recalled how the Indiramma government headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy took several initiatives to fulfil the promises ahead of the previous elections as well as schemes that did not find a mention in the party's election manifesto, but was not able to communicate the achievements effectively to the people. In addition to a slew of welfare schemes like free bus travel to women, LPG cylinder at subsidised price of ₹500, farm loan waiver, Rythu Bharosa and others, the government successfully filled 60,000 vacancies in different departments making Telangana the first State to make such massive recruitments. 'Unlike the previous government which mislead the people through Goebbels' propaganda in its 10-year rule, the Congress government implemented spree of welfare schemes in one-and-a-half years of its rule,' he said. He cited the distribution of new ration cards to seven lakh families in addition to including names of 15 lakh members in ration cards. The Bhu Bharati Act was enacted to mitigate the hardships faced by farmers in securing rights on their lands. The government had implemented these schemes in spite of the financial constraints it faced ever since it took over the reins. Mr. Srinivas Reddy directed the I&PR officials to take the schemes to the people as it was their responsibility to effectively communicate the government's welfare-centric schemes.

"There is banking trail which indicates that during the relevant period of transactions, Trilok Singh Dhillon received payments from the liquor syndicate in his bank accounts," the ED said. The agency said that the alleged scam has paved way to a "massive loss" to the state exchequer and filled the pockets of the beneficiaries of a liquor syndicate with over Rs 2,100 crore. According to ED, the alleged scam was done between 2019 and 2022 when Chhattisgarh was governed by the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government. The ED in January arrested former minister and Congress leader Kawasi Lakhma, besides Anwar Dhebar, former IAS officer Anil Tuteja, Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer Arunpati Tripathi and some others as part of their investigations in the case. An FIR was registered by the EOW/ACB on January 17 last year, about a month after the BJP defeated the incumbent Congress government in the 2023 assembly polls, and named 70 individuals and companies, including former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma and former chief secretary Vivek Dhand. According to the ED, the alleged commission generated through the illegal sale of liquor was shared "as per the directions from the highest political executives of the state".

When India's Vice-President quit mid-term and CJI had to fill in as President
Fifty-six years before Jagdeep Dhankhar's surprising resignation from the post of Vice-President on Monday, India witnessed the first resignation of a Vice-President in 1969. But far from the intrigue in the Dhankhar case, the 1969 resignation was forced by circumstances and eventually resulted in the Chief Justice of India (CJI) taking charge of the Republic as the President of the sudden death of President Zakir Husain in May 1969, Vice-President VV Giri stepped down from his post to run for the President's led to the young Republic facing a unique situation, where Giri's resignation to run for the President's post resulted in the CJI, Mohammad Hidayatullah, taking charge as the President.
