Even 24 hours after publication of Bihar draft rolls no political party has filed objections: ECI

NEW DELHI: Amid a major political storm over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls, the poll panel on Saturday said that despite 24 hours having passed since the draft rolls were published, none of the political parties have filed even a single case of claims and objections.
Meanwhile, the Commission has approved a substantial hike in the honorarium for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Supervisors, along with newly introduced payouts for senior officials overseeing electoral roll management.
In an official statement, the poll panel said, the draft Electoral Rolls of all the 90,712 polling booths of all 243 assembly constituencies have been shared with all the political parties by all 38 DEOs of Bihar on 1 August 2025.
It, however, said, 'From 1 August 2025 (3 PM) till 2 August (3 PM), all political parties put together, have filed 'Zero' Claims and Objections for the addition of the names of eligible electors and deletion of the names of ineligible electors.'

ECI suspends four West Bengal electoral officers for voter list tamperings, orders probe

NEW DELHI: Election Commission of India on Tuesday suspended four West Bengal government officers for allegedly including wrongful names in the voters list and compromising data security, officials said. The poll panel also asked the West Bengal Chief Secretary to lodge FIRs against the four officers under provisions of the election laws. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated action against four West Bengal election officials following a Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) report exposing unauthorized inclusions in electoral rolls of Baruipur Purba and Moyna constituencies. In its letter to the Chief Secretary - a copy obtained by this newspaper - the ECI cited the CEO's findings of irregularities committed by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant EROs. The officers - Debottam Dutta Choudhury (ERO), Tathagata Mondal (AERO), Biplab Sarkar (ERO), and Sudipta Das (AERO) were responsible for preparing, revising, and correcting electoral rolls. The ECI directed that "suitable disciplinary proceedings" be initiated against them and FIRs lodged for actions amounting to "criminal misconduct." An FIR was also recommended against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. The discrepancies surfaced during a sample check of voter application forms (Form 6) by the West Bengal Election Commission. The ECI noted that the officers violated due procedure, warranting penalties under Section 32(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Following the CEO's orders, the District Election Officer (DEO) must form a senior officials' team to scrutinice all voter forms processed in the past year and submit a report by August 14, 2025. The ECI instructed the Chief Secretary to ensure strict compliance and submit an action-taken report "at the earliest." The move comes amid Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's opposition to the ECI's push for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's electoral rolls.

Bihar voters will show mirror to Rahul Gandhi: Giriraj

Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Bihar voters will show mirror to 'poster boy of Pakikstan' Rahul Gandhi in the coming elections for spreading lies about the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said on Tuesday. 'The SIR is taking place as part of an electoral process yet Rahul Gandhi and Tejaswi Yadav jhooth ki kheti karte hain (they cultivate lies)," he told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of an event organised by the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC). The minister said if RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav possesses two voter cards, he should die of shame (usse toh chullu bhar paani mein doob ke mar jana chahiye). Singh also lashed out on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi saying he believes in US President Donald Trump and likes what Pakistan says, but does not agree with the Supreme Court. He referred to recent observations by the Supreme Court against Rahul Gandhi in relation to his remarks on Indian army. 'He (Gandhi) has become the poster boy of Pakistan. He is going to Bihar from the 9th to the 14th. The people of Bihar will show them a mirror in the elections," said Singh, who is MP from Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. Referring to the over 35 lakh weavers associated with handlooms, the minister said in the near future their designs will be linked to blockchain technology so that the designs do not get stolen by any foreign company again. 'I don't want to take any names, foreign companies are stealing our designs and projecting as their own. India does not need anyone else's design," Singh told reporters. Abhishek Banerjee Meets Trinamool MPs For Groundwork Ahead Of Bengal Polls

Kolkata: A day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee elevated her nephew Abhishek Banerjee as the parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, the Trinamool MP held a virtual meeting of all party leaders from district to the organisational fronts. Trinamool sources have told NDTV this meeting is crucial to prepare a roadmap for the next few months before elections are announced in Bengal. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah frequently visiting the state, the ruling party does not want to give any space to the opposition to register a political fight. While the Special Intensive Revision or SIR held by the Election Commission dominated the meeting's agenda, Abhishek Banerjee also instructed party cadres to fight tooth and nail against the BJP to portray them as anti-Bengal. As an example, he highlighted the Delhi Police communique seeking Bengali translation but instead called it "Bangladeshi Language". Slamming the BJP's IT cell chief, Abhishek Banerjee even mentioned how no BJP MLA stood up against the contentious letter. Mr Banerjee also raised the issue of NRC letters being sent to Bengal residents by the Assam government. A source privy to the meeting said he cited SIR and mentioned how a dog and tractor had fake residential certificates in Bihar. Speaking on Central fund blockade, Mr Banerjee told his leaders that more than 1.75 lakh crore rupees has been withheld by the BJP-led government but the West Bengal government is no longer dependent on it. As an example, he added, how the first two installments of the housing scheme undertaken by Mamata Banerjee has been disbursed to the beneficiaries. In the coming days, the Trinamool Congress leadership plans to raise the party's voice against SIR and linking it to NRC to downsize BJP in the state and also highlight the various schemes that the state government has funded despite the lack of Central funds.
