Syrian, Lebanese Armies Clash Over Three Killed Syrian Soldiers

Morocco World17-03-2025

Rabat – The Lebanese army said it is in communication with Syrian authorities, after the two countries exchanged fire along their borders. The new round of clashes was triggered by the kidnapping and killing of three Syrian soldiers, for which the country's defense ministry accused Hezbollah.
The Lebanese defense ministry said in a statement that Hezbollah allegedly kidnapped the three in Zeita Dam along the Lebanese-Syrian border, took them to Lebanese territory, and then executed them.
It added that 'this blatant aggression will not go unanswered,' continuing it 'will take all the necessary measures after this dangerous escalation from the Hezbollah militia.'
Hezbollah rejects the accusation, saying in a statement that it 'categorically denies any connection to the events taking place today on the Lebanese-Syrian border.'
Lebanese security sources informed that the Syrian soldiers were shot at by tribe members after they crossed the border into their town. Two Syrians died once shot, while the third was severely injured and transferred to the hospital before succumbing to his wounds, the statement added.
In response, Syria retaliated by launching artillery shelling from the Qusayr countryside onto the town of Al-Qasr, pushing residents to flee and escape the bombardment.
A statement from the Lebanese army indicated that it had handed over the bodies of the three killed soldiers to Syrian authorities and sent reinforcements to the border area in response to the firing.
It noted that contacts between the Lebanese army leadership and Syrian authorities are ongoing to maintain security and stability along the border, which have been subject to recurrent clashes since the rebellion ousted Bashar al-Assad – Hezbollah's ally – and established their institutions.
The borders between Lebanon and Syria span over 375 kilometers and feature rugged terrain with no clear demarcation in many areas. With only six official border crossings, the region remains leaky, leaving room for more frequent activity at unauthorized routes. Tags: Hezbollah and SyriaLebanon and Syria

Morocco Launches Repartition Process for Women Held in Syria

Moroccan authorities have reportedly initiated an administrative process requiring families to complete repatriation forms for their relatives held in northeastern Syrian camps. These include the infamous Al-Roj and Al-Hol camps, which are under Kurdish control and currently host around 8,000 people from 55 different countries—mostly families of former ISIS fighters. Currently, at least 476 Moroccans remain stranded in Syria, including 103 women and 285 children. This long-neglected issue is resurfacing in the wake of a major diplomatic shift between Morocco and Syria following the ousting of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December. This development offers long-awaited hope for women and children who have been trapped in these camps under dire humanitarian conditions. Families and human rights advocates have lamented Moroccan authorities for years of inaction with many calling for a phased repatriation process that prioritizes the most vulnerable. While some activists urged for a security-focused, case-by-case assessment—citing concerns about extremist affiliations—others argued that women and children should be approached differently, recognizing that many were coerced or manipulated into joining ISIS or living in exile. Signs of deepening Morocco-Syria normalization The renewed ties between Morocco and Syria have been marked by significant diplomatic gestures, including the closure of the Polisario Front's office in Damascus and King Mohammed VI's decision to reopen Morocco's embassy there after nearly 13 years. The embassy's reopening was officially announced in May, signaling a major foreign policy realignment. Mohammed VI conveyed the decision in a letter to Syria's interim President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, which was read by Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita during the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad. The letter reaffirmed Morocco's solidarity with Syria's territorial integrity and national sovereignty, while expressing support for the Syrian people's aspirations for freedom, security and stability. This diplomatic thaw has brought renewed attention to unresolved humanitarian concerns—chief among them, the repatriation of Moroccan nationals held in Syrian camps and prisons. According to a report by the Tetouan-based North Observatory of Human Rights, 38% of Moroccan jihadists who joined ISIS in 2015 were women. The report also emphasized how ISIS often targeted Moroccan women with emotionally manipulative messages, aiming to recruit them alongside their husbands and children, seizing the strategic role women have played in persuading entire families to join the group.

Sahara: Peruvian Congress Exhorts Government to Support Morocco, Warns of Polisario Terrorist Threats

Doha – The Peruvian Congress has forcefully demanded its government to back Morocco's complete sovereignty over the Sahara, while exposing the dangerous terrorist connections and criminal operations of the Polisario Front – a puppet organization manipulated by the Algerian regime. In a motion adopted by an overwhelming majority on Monday, the Peruvian legislative body commanded the executive branch to 'adopt a position of support to the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over the Western Sahara,' as stated in the text presented by Congresswoman Carmen Patricia Juarez Gallegos, First Vice-President of the Congress. The motion hailed ties with Rabat since 1964 and declared Morocco's autonomy proposal as a 'serious solution in conformity with international law.' Peruvian lawmakers asserted that Morocco's 2007 initiative 'has received the support of numerous countries, among which the United States of America, the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of France, which have recognized said proposal as the most realistic and viable basis for a lasting solution to the conflict.' The Congress blasted the Polisario Front for its treacherous alliances with terrorist networks. The motion exposes to the international community 'the Polisario's links with terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah, as well as with networks trafficking arms and persons, and the exploitation of minors in the Tindouf camps.' It demands international bodies to 'investigate these crimes and sanction them.' The motion slams the Polisario Front, which exists solely in the Tindouf camps on Algerian soil where it imprisons hostages under the watchful eye of its Algerian masters. The fraudulent 'SADR' remains nothing more than a phantom entity, a fictional creation sustained by the hostile Algerian regime in its desperate campaign against Morocco's territorial integrity. 'The Polisario is implicated in serious violations of human rights that constitute threats to regional and international security,' the motion thunders, adding that 'various reports from international think tanks have warned against attempts by the Tehran-Hezbollah-Polisario axis to destabilize North Africa and the Maghreb through ideological infiltration, financing of radical activities, and proliferation of weapons in the region.' Last March, Peru's Congress passed another motion urging the country's Foreign Ministry to express clear support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan. The document, introduced by legislators Maria Del Carmen Alva Prieto and Ernesto Bustamante Donayre, referenced the plan's widespread international backing from over 120 countries and cited UN Security Council Resolution 2756 from October 2024. In April, Keiko Fujimori, leader of Peru's Popular Force party, voiced her party's absolute support for Morocco's sovereignty during a visit to Rabat, where she met with Rachid Talbi El Alami, President of the Moroccan House of Representatives. This diplomatic pivot follows Peru's decision in September 2023 to sever ties with the self-proclaimed 'SADR,' a bogus entity fabricated by the deceptive Polisario Front and its Algerian sponsors. Peru had briefly reestablished these misguided ties under former leftist President Pedro Castillo – a political outsider who presided over a government in disarray, struggling to return stability to Lima after years of public discontent and large-scale riots – before rectifying this error. The Congress reaffirmed Peru's dedication to defending human rights, combating terrorism, and building diplomatic relations with countries that advance peace, security, and development, while rejecting the destabilizing schemes of the Algerian-backed separatist faction that threatens regional stability. Morocco maintains full control of its Sahara territories, implementing an ambitious development plan while the Algeria-financed Polisario languishes in isolated camps, holding people against their will and engaging in criminal activities under the protection of the Algerian military. Technical Delegation from Morocco's Foreign Ministry Visits Syria to Operationalize Royal Decision to Reopen Embassy in Damascus

In line with the decision of HM King Mohammed VI to reopen the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Damascus, a technical delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates visited the Syrian capital to finalize the necessary arrangements for the embassy's reopening. During the visit, the Moroccan delegation held discussions with senior officials from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, focusing on the logistical, legal, and diplomatic components required to operationalize this decision. These talks form part of the implementation of the High Royal Instructions aimed at restoring full diplomatic relations between the two brotherly nations. It is worth recalling that HM King Mohammed VI announced the decision to reopen Morocco's embassy in Damascus during His speech to the 34th Arab Summit, held on May 17 in Baghdad. The embassy had remained closed since 2012. In His speech, the Sovereign emphasized that this step 'will contribute to opening up broader prospects for the historical bilateral relations between our countries and our peoples in the two sister nations.'
