Syrian, Lebanese Armies Clash Over Three Killed Syrian Soldiers

Morocco World17-03-2025
Rabat – The Lebanese army said it is in communication with Syrian authorities, after the two countries exchanged fire along their borders. The new round of clashes was triggered by the kidnapping and killing of three Syrian soldiers, for which the country's defense ministry accused Hezbollah.
The Lebanese defense ministry said in a statement that Hezbollah allegedly kidnapped the three in Zeita Dam along the Lebanese-Syrian border, took them to Lebanese territory, and then executed them.
It added that 'this blatant aggression will not go unanswered,' continuing it 'will take all the necessary measures after this dangerous escalation from the Hezbollah militia.'
Hezbollah rejects the accusation, saying in a statement that it 'categorically denies any connection to the events taking place today on the Lebanese-Syrian border.'
Lebanese security sources informed that the Syrian soldiers were shot at by tribe members after they crossed the border into their town. Two Syrians died once shot, while the third was severely injured and transferred to the hospital before succumbing to his wounds, the statement added.
In response, Syria retaliated by launching artillery shelling from the Qusayr countryside onto the town of Al-Qasr, pushing residents to flee and escape the bombardment.
A statement from the Lebanese army indicated that it had handed over the bodies of the three killed soldiers to Syrian authorities and sent reinforcements to the border area in response to the firing.
It noted that contacts between the Lebanese army leadership and Syrian authorities are ongoing to maintain security and stability along the border, which have been subject to recurrent clashes since the rebellion ousted Bashar al-Assad – Hezbollah's ally – and established their institutions.
The borders between Lebanon and Syria span over 375 kilometers and feature rugged terrain with no clear demarcation in many areas. With only six official border crossings, the region remains leaky, leaving room for more frequent activity at unauthorized routes. Tags: Hezbollah and SyriaLebanon and Syria

Violence Returns to Southern Syria as Ceasefire Breaks Down

Rabat — Clashes between Druze and the government have returned to Syria's southern Sweida province. Four people died in fresh fighting on Sunday, according to monitoring groups, as the interim government blamed Druze local groups for violating the ceasefire agreement reached last month. The Syrian government accuses these groups of starting the new round of fighting by breaking the ceasefire terms. However, the situation remains fluid as different factions continue to clash in the province. The government said in a statement that 'the media and sectarian mobilisation campaigns led by the rebel gangs in the city have not ceased over the past period.' In July, the Sweida area saw deadly battles between Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin groups, supported by government troops and tribal fighters. Last month's deadly clashes lasted a week and killed at least 260 people before both sides agreed to a ceasefire. Tensions escalated further when Israel launched attacks on Damascus, claiming it aimed to protect the Druze community in Syria. US President Donald Trump brokered a deal between Syria and Israel in tandem, After which Syria's president Ahmed Al Sharaa declared a ceasefire. Following the previous ceasefire, Sharaa said on state television that 'the Druze people are an integral part of the fabric of this homeland.' Sunday's clashes show the ceasefire has failed to bring lasting peace to the region, as tensions between the different groups never fully disappeared, and violence has now erupted again. Sweida province has experienced periodic violence between its various ethnic and religious communities throughout Syria's long civil war. The latest fighting reveals how fragile peace agreements remain in the country's complex conflict zones. Syria is rebounding from over a decade-long civil war and trying to reconstruct, but the reality is that the country has many internal and external challenges. Israel Conducts Ground Raids in Southern Syria

Rabat — The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) announced Sunday that they carried out ground raids in southern Syria. IOF claims that raids are targeting arms trafficking operations near the annexed Golan Heights. The operation marks IOF's latest ground operation since the overthrow of Syria's previous president in December 2024. During the night, IOF troops 'completed a mission that included on-site interrogation of several suspects involved in arms trafficking in the Hader region of southern Syria,' near the Golan Heights that Israel annexed, the IOF said in a statement. The IOF claimed that following gathering intelligence and conducting field interrogations, its 'troops simultaneously entered four locations and found numerous weapons that the suspects had trafficked.' The military released footage showing IOF soldiers in uniform, operating in armored vehicles and on foot during nighttime operations in the area. The IOF said one of its troops 'remains deployed in the region, continuing to operate and prevent any terrorist elements from taking root in Syria,' and claimed this is 'to protect Israeli civilians, particularly residents of the Golan Heights.' The ground operation represents the latest action Israel has taken in Syria, as the IOF has deployed forces in the UN-controlled buffer zone on the Golan Heights after the rebel coalition toppled Bashar Al Assad in December 2024. Since Assad's fall, Israel has launched hundreds of strikes on Syrian military sites. Israeli officials claim they want to prevent Assad's weapons arsenal from falling into the hands of the new authorities, whom they view with suspicion. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also demanded the demilitarization of southern Syria. Israel's recent interference in Syria took place on July 16, when the IOF launched strikes on Damascus, claiming it was to protect the Druze. The July Damascus strikes targeted Syrian army headquarters as Israel escalated its campaign against Syrian forces in the southern city of Sweida, where fighting erupted between Druze communities and Syrian security forces. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun highlights Morocco's role during Algeria visit

At the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun embarked on an official visit to Algeria on Tuesday. The visit focused on discussions surrounding the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure in southern Lebanon. During a joint press conference with President Tebboune, the Lebanese leader expressed his gratitude for Algeria's unwavering support for Lebanon. He also highlighted Morocco's significant role in Arab efforts aimed at resolving the Lebanese crisis. In the presence of several Algerian officials, he remarked, «Lebanon remembers Algeria's steadfast support. Algeria has consistently been a key player in Arab initiatives to help Lebanon overcome its internal and external crises. Notably, Algeria's involvement in the Arab High Committee, alongside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Morocco, was instrumental in the efforts that culminated in the approval of the Taif Agreement in Taif City». Continuing in a diplomatic tone, the Lebanese president underscored the importance of Arab unity, stating, «The primary requirement for Arab support is for Arab nations to stand together in brotherhood for truth, goodness, and peace. This is our hope, and with this motivation, we aim to engage with every Arab country and household with love and fraternity, without interfering in each other's affairs». Although Algerian officials refrained from commenting on the Lebanese president's remarks, his mention of Morocco was likely awkward for them, given their usual reluctance to acknowledge the Kingdom.
