DJ Sumbody was shot and killed in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on November 20, 2022, in a drive-by shooting.
The Sefoka family released a heartfelt statement through the Be A Sumbody Foundation, addressing the painful developments and thanking those who've supported them since 2022.
'The arrest is a step toward justice, but we're reliving the trauma of his untimely passing,' said the family.
They stressed how painful this chapter remains for the Sefoka family and urged the public and media to respect their space.
The family commended the South African Police Service, especially Gauteng's Organised Crime Unit and Political Task Team, for their commitment.
'We extend our deepest gratitude to the South African Police Service, particularly the Gauteng organised crime unit and the political task team, for their relentless efforts in pursuing justice,' the family expressed in their statement.
'The dedication of law enforcement has been instrumental in this case, and we remain hopeful for a thorough legal process.
'We also wish to thank South Africans, patriots, and supporters of DJ Sumbody and the foundation for their unwavering love, prayers, and solidarity. Your continued support has been a source of strength for the family.'
The four suspects briefly appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The murder case was postponed for further investigation.
They are facing three murder charges related to the killing of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards in November 2022.

State opposes bail of 'dangerous criminal' DJ Sumbody murder accused

The state has described the Sandton businessman Katiso 'KT' Molefe, 61, as a dangerous criminal with no regard for human life. Molefe, who is accused of the murder of Pretoria club owner Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody, and is also charged with the murder of Soweto DJ Vintos, appeared at the Alexandra magistrate's court on Wednesday. The state is opposing his bail application. An affidavit by the investigating officer read in court described Molefe as a flight risk. DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were shot dead in Woodmead, Johannesburg, in November 2022. Molefe is also charged with the murder of DJ Vintos, real name Hector Buthelezi, in March 2022 outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto. 'The crimes that he is charged with are at this stage four counts of conspiracy to commit murder and four counts of murder, and if he is convicted, he will face long-term imprisonment,' read the affidavit. The court heard that the information indicates that Molefe is allegedly active in the illicit drug trade and that the killing of the DJs was connected to the trade. Investigators approached Sars using section 73 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca) notification. The preliminary investigation by Sars revealed that the business entities to which he attests in his affidavit during the bail application in February, on the matter of Armand Swart, in support of his bail application, didn't identify the source of the funds. 'The analysis of the bank statements obtained through the section 205 subpoena shows that the applicant predominantly receives cash deposits, with no identifiable source of these funds. 'This raises a strong suspicion that he has unidentified sources of income. What further needs to be brought to the court's attention is that there was a huge outcry on social media against the applicant's release on bail recently,' read the affidavit. The investigating officer's affidavit indicated that Molefe will intimidate and influence the witnesses. 'Witnesses have indicated that they fear for their lives. There is an imminent danger that if the applicant is released on bail, more witnesses will go into hiding and will refuse to come to court.' It was stated that putting more witnesses in witness protection has its own challenges and it's extremely disruptive to the lives of the witnesses. 'There is a likelihood that the applicant will destroy evidence when released on bail. One of the AK-47s used in the shooting of DJ Sumbody is still missing, and we are still looking for it.' To further support the assertion that the applicant has destroyed evidence, the investigating officer attached the statement which illustrates that Molefe had been consistently using same cellphone number across different five phones since April 2016. 'However, on 8 October 2024, the applicant abruptly ceased using both this number and the device associated with it. 'The timing of this change is highly significant, as it occurred one day after crucial evidence was presented in the Vereening court on 7 October 2024, during proceedings related to the rearrest of accused 1, Michael Pule Tau, for contravening bail conditions,' read the affidavit. The investigating officer indicated that the evidence against Molefe was overwhelming, and if released on bail, he has a strong motive to evade justice. He has the means to leave the country at any time, as his movement across the border over the years from 2004 until 2024 was more than 100 times. Molefe's co-accused, who were not in court as they did not apply for bail and are in prison for the murder of Armand Swart, are Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Musa Kekana. The matter was postponed to August 14 for the continuation of the bail application.

Murder-accused businessman Katiso 'KT' Molefe declares assets worth millions

JOHANNESBURG – Murder-accused Sandton businessman Katiso Molefe has declared assets worth millions, revealing a lavish lifestyle before the Alexandra Magistrates Court, where he is applying for bail. Molefe faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the killing of musicians Oupa Sefoka knowns as DJ Sumbody and DJ Vinto, whose real name is Hector Buthelezi. Sefoka and Buthelezi were both killed in a hail of bullets in the 2022, in separate incidents which the State believes Mofele orchestrated He has also been charged with the murders of Sefoka's bodyguards, who he was travelling with when he was shot in November 2022. ' In my personal capacity I'm the owner of a Mercedes Benz SL600 worth approximately R400, 000 and through my company I also owned a V Class Mercedes valued at R1.8 million and a Range Rover worth R1.2 million. I actually sold my V Class Mercedes to pay for legal fees and bail.' INVESTIGATORS ARGUE AGAINST MOLEFE'S BAIL BID At the same time, investigators have argued against the release of Molefe, saying he is a dangerous criminal with no regard for human life. Molefe is also on trial for another hit on Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. On Wednesday, the police officers leading the investigation into Molefe sat in the Alexandra Magistrates Court surrounded by heavily armed guards. While Molefe was out on R100,000 bail for another murder case against him, the lead investigating officer in the current matter before court said there is an imminent danger should Molefe be released on bail. 'Witnesses have indicated that they fear for their lives since his release on bail. There is an imminent danger that if Molefe is released on bail once more, witnesses will go in hiding and will refuse to come to court.' Police also believe that if Molefe is granted bail, there is a likelihood that he will destroy evidence as one of the AK47 rifles used in the shooting of DJ Sumbody remains missing. Molefe's bail application was postponed to next Friday, and he will remain behind bars.

DJ Sumbody murder case: Evidence of contract killing scheme emerged in court

Accused mastermind Katiso Molefe appears in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court amid claims linking him to the murders of DJs and drug-related killings across Gauteng. Image: Simon Majadibodu / IOL Katiso Molefe, the murder-accused and alleged key figure in the killings of popular musicians, Oupa 'DJ Sumbody' Sefoka, his two bodyguards, and Hector 'DJ Vintos' Buthelezi, was in constant communication with his co-accused and transferred huge sums of money shortly after the murder of DJ Sumbody in November 2022. This was according to an affidavit deposed by the chief investigating officer in the alleged spate of contract killings orchestrated by Molefe, who was described as a dangerous criminal who was not afraid to kill. Molefe, who was arrested last month by the SAP's Political Killings Task Team in Gauteng, appeared alone for his bail application yesterday, where he revealed that in a separate matter involving Armand Swart, he had not attempted to flee, which was why he should be considered for bail. Molefe's involvement in the murder of DJ Sumbody, his two bodyguards, and DJ Vintos has been linked through ballistics tests, WhatsApp messages, detailed bank statements, including the AK-47, which was found at the home of Michael Pule Tau (accused one). As a result, he faces four counts of conspiracy to commit murder, four counts of murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition linked to the murders of the two DJs and DJ Sumbody's two bodyguards, while the murder matter of Swart was still pending. His three co-accused, Musa Kekana, Tau, and Floyd Mabusela, have opted not to apply for bail and did not appear in court on yesterday. "The incidents leading to the investigation are described as contract killings, characterised by assassination-style shootings with the sole motive of eliminating the victims... It is important to bear in mind that this type of murder is meticulously planned and executed with precision. "This invariably involves intimate knowledge regarding the movements of the victim on the day of the planned killing, and the perpetrators of this crime are extremely dangerous and unscrupulous," the investigating officer said. On the proof that the investigating officer had gathered, the State, which had opposed bail for Molefe, indicated that Molefe, acted as the mastermind, ordered and paid for the hit against the two musicians, with bank transactions and cellphone records being at the centre of the investigation. "The middleman's role is to arrange for payment after the job is done. In this regard, it is important to note that according to the cellphone records of accused one, he was in constant cellphone contact with the applicant, shortly after the killing of DJ Sumbody, and made several attempts to call the applicant, without success. "WhatsApp communications on 21 November 2022 (the day after the shooting) between accused 2 (Mabusela) and 3 (Kekana) revealed a conversation between the two, where it is stated that accused 1 should call accused 4 (referred to as K) to arrange for payment," the officer added. The investigating officer also claimed that after the murder of the musicians in March and November 2022, Molefe's co-accused, the alleged hitmen, made large cash deposits into their bank accounts. However, Molefe, speaking through his legal counsel, Michael Hellens SC, denied that he was the person being referred to in these electronic conversations as K.
