NYC Officially Recognizes 'Cecilia Gentili Day' on the Birthday of the Legendary Trans Rights Activist

New York City has passed a resolution designating January 31 as Cecilia Gentili Day, in honor of the legendary late activist's impact on her birthday.
The City Council held a vote to pass Resolution 678 on January 23, with members of the committee voting 3-1 in favor of the resolution, according to video of the meeting posted to citymeetings.nyc.
Prior to the vote, Council Member Tiffany Cabán offered remarks on the resolution and what Gentili meant to New Yorkers. In a video posted to citymeetings.nyc, Cabán shared that she was 'feeling a lot of feelings this morning,' and that she was 'super, super proud' to be honoring Gentili. The Councilmember called her 'a fearless leader, a trans icon, an author, an actress, a pioneering advocate for the dignity and freedom of sex workers and so much more.'
In a separate testimony in front of the city council, Río Sofia, Gentili's daughter and the co-executive director of the arts organization QUEER|ART, expanded on her mother's tireless advocacy. Sofia herself met Gentili at Apicha Community Health Center, which she grew 'from a program that served 27 trans people in the city to over 500.' Gentili also founded the sex worker rights organization Decrim NY, and was instrumental in the repeal of the 'Walking While Trans' law. Her legislative legacy also includes advocating for the passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), which amended New York state's civil rights law to add gender identity/expression as a protected category. Sofia also noted that Gentili founded the COIN Clinic at the LGBTQ+ health organization Callen-Lorde, a first-of-its-kind clinic providing free healthcare for sex workers in the city.
Sofia's summary of Cecilia's impact was just a selection of ways Gentili has shaped the livelihood of the city's trans and sex workers population in the city and beyond. Sofia described that Gentili had received so many accolades 'that she just kept them in a cardboard box in her closet.'
The Legacy of Cecilia Gentili: Artist, Mother, and Saint of Trans Liberation
Gentili lived a life dedicated to our collective liberation. The legendary artist and organizer is the posthumous recipient of our 2024 Vanguard Award.
'At one point, she was like, 'If there aren't material things that come with these accolades, these recognitions, I don't want them,'' she said. 'So I want us to remember every January 31st that what Cecilia was fighting for was not about recognition. It was about trans liberation, liberation for immigrants, for sex workers, and I want us to carry forth that legacy.'
To honor the inaugural Cecilia Gentili Day, the organizations G.L.I.T.S., Cecilia's organization Trans Equity Consulting, and Queer|Art will be holding a celebration at La MaMa Experimental Theatre this afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

NYC's flaccid free-condom program needs to grow again, critics say

City Health Department officials should get on the stick and start providing randy New Yorkers with free condoms again, critics say. The department's rubber shortage has existed for about a year — reportedly because of high demand — prompting its flaccid performance to become the butt of jokes and condemnation, including on a new Instagram account called Hack NY. While the site had been positively plugging free government programs as a public service, it recently posted a video skit featuring Big Apple comedian Ayanna Dookie and Aaron Cohen, an actor with OldJewishMen, targeting the rubberless Department of Health. Advertisement The video shows Dookie waking up startled when she sees the older Cohen sleeping next to her, with her character ending up pregnant. 'This could have been avoided,' the clip's narrator says. 'New York City is supposed to be giving out free condoms, but they're in short supply. Advertisement 'Comment to tell them that we need more [condoms] before you make your next mistake.' New York City residents who currently go to the DOH's web site for free condoms are greeted with this message: 'Due to an overwhelming initial response we have exhausted our inventory far sooner than anticipated. 'We hope to be back up and running shortly – stay tuned and we will see you soon!' the department promises. 3 A new comedy sketch from the Instagram page 'Hack NY' pokes fun at the shortage of free condoms that are supposed to be provided by the city's Department of Health. Instagram/Hack New York Advertisement The DOH includes a 'free condom' map showing the groups and businesses it claims to have distributed free condoms to. But Hack NY said it made random calls to the groups and found that only 33% of the organizations listed on the site had free condoms. Hack NY also asked the Health Department when condoms would be back in full supply, and the agency didn't provide a timeline or answer about the accuracy of its free-condom supply map. 3 The video features actors Ayanna Dookie and Aaron Cohen having an unexpected pregnancy because of the condom shortage. Instagram/Hack New York 3 The video urges viewers to call on city officials to fix the free condom shortage. Instagram/Hack New York Advertisement Matt Wing, a co-founder of Hack NY, said the site decided to pivot to criticizing a city agency 'given that our vet of this one came up short. 'We decided to pivot to encouraging viewers to call out DOH for the shortage in hopes they will feel motivated to increase supply,' Wing told The Post. But the mayor's preliminary management report released in January said 'safer-sex products' including condom distribution, plummeted 21 percent for the first four months of fiscal year 2025 compared to 2024. 'This is due to delays in registering the purchase order (PO) for the NYC Condom Availability Program's new safer-sex product vendor,' the report said. 'Regular monthly distribution resumed at higher levels at the end of September 2024, when the PO was registered.' Advertisement The Health Department told Hack_NY it's in the process of securing a new vendor for the purchase and distribution of condoms and other safer-sex products and is limiting orders to 300 condoms and lubricant packets combined per order per month. The city unveiled its own 'NYC' brand of free condoms in 2007 under then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg – in packets with a variety of colors representing the different subway lines. The Big Apple first started providing male condoms in the city's sexually transmitted disease health clinics in 1971 and were distributed in public high schools in 1991.

Madonna Lookalike Daughter Lourdes' Best Photos

Madonna and her oldest daughter, Lourdes Leon, are a dynamic duo with a shared love of art, dance and fashion. Madonna welcomed Lourdes, also known by those close to her as 'Lola,' with former partner Carlos Leon in October 1996, the first of the legendary pop star's six children. Madonna later had her son, Rocco, with then-husband Guy Ritchie before the couple adopted a baby boy, David, together. After their divorce, Madonna adopted her daughter, Mercy, and twin girls, Stella and Estere, as a single mom. But there's definitely a special bond between the superstar and her edgy oldest daughter. As Lourdes has come into her own, she's shown the world that she's ready to introduce herself and pave her own path separate from her iconic mom's towering career. And while Lourdes has already cultivated a rich, eclectic career in modeling, there are still moments where we can't help but see the spitting image of her mother. We love seeing these two women together, and looking back on photos of the pair from when Lourdes was a preteen and teenager makes us feel super nostalgic. New "Can I Paint That Dog?" mural unveiled in Northern Liberties

A newly finished mural in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia showcases the neighborhood's dogs, big and small. Pet owners flocked to 3rd and Poplar streets, near the Liberty Lands park, on Friday for the unveiling of the mural "Can I Paint That Dog?" The mural by artist Emily White is on a wall next to the park at Kaplan's New Model Bakery. It features 10 dogs who live in the neighborhood and or the nearby Orianna Hill dog park. Dog owners sent in several reference photos for White to work with, and you can follow along with her progress over the past several weeks on her Instagram @gggreatwhite. The mural's title also has a striking similarity to a viral video where a little boy holding a stuffed animal asks, "Can I pet that dog?"
