
Bristol graduates helping city fight mounting e-waste
A Bristol businessman who employs recent graduates from the city's universities to fix electronics is urging people to thing twice before throwing away their broken items in an effort to fight e-waste. Casey Sather, 27, fixed his first iPhone as a teenager - bringing the skills he learned from YouTube to the University of Bristol, where he repaired friends' devices in lecture theatres, student halls and pubs. More than a decade later his business, which employs seven people full-time, repairs hundreds of electronic items each month and helps run free repair cafes."The stuff that people bring in [to get fixed] is amazing," he said. "But the stuff that people throw out is even more amazing."
Mr Sather realised there was a need for reliable, affordable technology repairs during his astrophysics degree, where he saw fellow students taken advantage of by repair shops or simply throwing away their broken phones or laptops. "The thing with repair is, it's not that hard," he told the BBC. "You can find the parts online, you can find a YouTube video, and you can get a screwdriver." With many students looking for a quick fix on their expensive devices, the word around Mr Sather's interest in repairing broken tech spread fast. Before he had even finished his degree, he was employing fellow students to help.
After graduating, Mr Sather formalised the business into Fix My Crack, setting up two repair shops at the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, employing students part-time."The last thing we want to do is charge a student," Mr Sather said. "Some shops will charge you just for cleaning charging ports, and it's ridiculous - we've been collecting all the charging port dust for years into a very gross jar. "So there's a lot of ways we help students, and our goal really is to educate and also reduce the amount of stuff going to e-waste, and if we can do that for free it's all the better."
The Fix My Crack name flew on campus, with both shops still repairing hundreds of devices each month, but as the business grew the decision was made to rebrand to FixMyTek.The team, made up of seven full-time employees, all of whom have recently graduated from Bristol's universities, still fix phones and laptops, but now also help businesses in the city tackle the mounting e-waste problem. The work investigates "how businesses handle their e-waste and what their current processes are", Mr Sather explained. "We've been working with researchers from the university to investigate this, and we do pop-up repair days and donation drives where the company and any employees are able to bring any old tech and learn repair skills."
'Confidence'
The profits from events with businesses are then used to keep costs down for student repairs, and allow the FixMyTek team to get involved with local repair cafes where anyone can bring in broken items and learn to fix them up for free. This does not just cover phones and laptops - Mr Sather explained he had a room at home full of toasters and coffee machines, and had even seen broken glasses and shoes. While events take place all over the city and are organised by many different organisations, the FixMyTek team are set to host their next session at Sparks in Broadmead on 23 March.
"The whole goal is to both give people these skills and the confidence that they need to go and fix stuff," Mr Sather said. "It's not that hard - companies have been making it so hard for years, so that no one is allowed to fix their stuff and you have to buy new things."He added: "If you can fix it yourself then it saves you money, helps the environment and gives you a real sense of kind of fulfilment - having all this stuff that you know inside and out."

'My AirPods were stolen in UK and they just showed up in unfathomable place'
A man from Maidstone, Kent expressed his disbelief after his missing Apple AirPod earphones bizarrely resurfaced in one of the last places in the world he suspected Apple's 'Find My' app is a very useful tool when it comes to helping to locate our mislaid devices - not just our mobile phones, but other gadgets made by the tech giant including iPads, MacBooks and AirPods earphones. Using the app, the iCloud service allows owners to view on a map where such devices are located at present - or where their last location before running out of battery. That has proven useful for one X user in Kent who had been struggling to find his AirPods - only for them to finally emerge thousands of miles away. In a post shared to the social media platform, user JB revealed the wireless earphones were in fact now in war-torn Iran - some 2,704 miles from his native Maidstone. "Hope the bod who nicked my AirPods on Maidstone high street and fled to Tehran is doing okay," JB added saractically in a caption. The tweet quickly gathered projection, viewed more than one million times over the weekend with hundreds of X users offering their thoughts in response. "If Apple were truly innovative they would enable a feature where you can talk or relay nuisance noise into one's stolen AirPods anywhere in the world," one person declared, before joking: " Rachel Reeves speeches on repeat for example." A second pondered: "Real question is how they ended up all the way in Iran of all b**ody places." A third claimed: "Tehran is one of the few places in the world where you can send/sell stolen Apple gear - they will gut an iPhone and replace enough of it so it can be used normally again without the iCloud lockout." A fourth joked: "You're better than me - I would be playing sounds at 3am their time and during the day so they loose their hearing." Whilst a fifth X user shared a similar unfortunate scenario alongside a screenshot: "Just like my phone got stolen one day, next day was in South Africa." Back in 2019, British student Lainey Fricker-Harrison was left shocked when her lost iPhone ended up 6,000 miles away in Hong Kong. Lainey lost the iPhone 6S during a shopping trip and said it had her entire 'life' on it. After a fruitless search, she was resigned to never getting the phone back. "I went home and got a new phone the next day. It's not as though it's a valuable phone, it's quite old," she said at the time. Lainey put her phone on 'lost' mode on Find My iPhone, so no one could access her data. A month later, after purchasing a new device, she received a message from a 'random email address' on Monday, more than a month later, saying her lost phone had been activated with a new sim card. She then received some suspicious messages that she thinks were a scam, saying her photo stream had been 'restored' into the phone of 'Mr Jack'. She didn't click on the link as a precaution, and changed her phone from lost mode to 'erase my iPhone'. Lainey logged on to Find My iPhone and discovered the device was in Hong Kong, near the border with China. Apple says of the technology online: "If you've lost or misplaced an Apple device or a personal item with an AirTag attached, use Find My to locate your device or item on a map. You can get directions to its location and, when you're nearby, play a sound or even get help finding its exact location." The company further advises users to mark their device as lost if unable to locate. "While you look for your device or item, you should mark it as lost," Apple says online. "This puts your device in Lost Mode – locking it with a passcode or your Apple Account password, and for devices compatible with Apple Pay, suspending any payment cards and passes that you use with Apple Pay. "You can also display a message that allows others to get in touch with you if they find your device or item."

I will miss O2 Priority, especially the ability to get concert tickets early. But Vodafone VeryMe has a lot of great offers on rotation. I was able to get hold of Disney+ for free for three months. And you can get Amazon Prime for £1 for three months as well, so it all helps save money. The other perk from O2 that I'll miss is the free roaming across Europe whenever I'm on holiday. Vodafone does have an eight day roaming pass for £15 or 15 day pass for £20 but I managed to find separate eSIM providers online that were much cheaper. Argos shoppers grab Apple's iPhone at 'lowest ever' price using very simple tip
If you are in need of a new iPhone, Argos has a very good deal worth checking out. It's pretty rare to find a genuinely decent deal on Apple's popular iPhones, but that's exactly what Argos is dishing out right now. The UK retailer is currently offering its 'lowest ever' price on one of these devices, and the deal is clearly proving popular, with Argos confirming that it is 'in demand' and 'selling fast'. The deal is available on the iPhone 13, which first launched back in 2021 and costs a whopping £679. Thanks to being superseded by the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, this call maker has been reduced at most stores with prices starting from £425. That's a decent deal, but there's a simple tip which makes things even cheaper. If you head to the Argos website and find the iPhone 13 product page, you'll see that three colours are available, including Starlight, Midnight and Green. Starlight and Midnight models both get that £425 price but click on Green and things are slashed to just £385 that's the 'lowest ever' Argos price and also beats others stores including Amazon and Currys. Of course, Green might not be your favourite colour, but most people pop a case on their devices, which means the design is rarely seen. The iPhone 13 might be a few years old but it still has plenty going for it. For the low £385 price you get a device that features a speedy A15 Bionic processor, 6.1-inch screen, dual-lens camera and Ceramic Shield design that helps prevent cracks and smashed screens when dropped. It's also fully 5G ready, gets decent battery life, wireless charging and 128GB of storage. As we mentioned earlier, the iPhone 13 has now been superseded by newer iPhones from Apple, which get bonus extras such as Crash Detection, USB-C charging, improved cameras and Apple Intelligence (iPhone 16 only). That said, some of those call makers cost hundreds of pounds extra and if they are out of your price range then the iPhone 13 is still a perfectly decent device.
