Madibaz miss Cup promotion by barest of margins
A pick-and-go by Orange Army utility forward Josh du Toit in the 74th minute ultimately proved to be the difference between the sides as the men from the City of Gold regained the lead for the last time to seal a 24-21 victory.
It was heartbreaking stuff for the Nelson Mandela University students, who rallied back from a 12-0 deficit to go into the halftime break two points ahead.
Tries by wing Jaden Witbooi and centre Lwande Davane in the final 10 minutes of the first stanza gave them just the momentum they needed on a blisteringly hot day on the highveld.
Fullback Layron Milborrow was on song all morning, converting each of his side's three five-pointers.
The lead changed hands repeatedly in the second half, a sure indication that the match was going to go down to the wire.
A penalty-try in the 54th minute, resulting from immense forward pressure by UJ, could easily have put Madibaz on the back foot, but the Gqeberha students hit back almost immediately.
Madibaz skipper Leon van der Merwe, playing his last season of Varsity Rugby, crossed the whitewash after some muscle-flexing of their own in the UJ red zone.
That put them 21-19 ahead with just over 10 minutes to play.
They managed to withstand the UJ assault until Du Toit got on the back of a rolling maul to give his side the win that kept them in the Varsity Cup.
While Madibaz will be disappointed that they will not be returning to student rugby's premier competition in 2026, they have enjoyed an excellent season.
They reached the Shield final where they gave a powerful Varsity College unit a real run for their money and have now gone toe-to-toe with an experienced Cup team.
This, despite losing 10 senior players at the end of 2024.
Van der Merwe said it was a tough game for his charges.

Former Grey College star and National Football League (NFL) hopeful Paschal Ekeji will make his Sharks debut in their round four Currie Cup match against Griquas in Kimberley on Friday afternoon (3pm). Another player who'll be in action for the team from Durban and who'll have many watching him is Junior Springboks U20 flank star Bathobele Hlekani. The Sharks are hunting a first win in this year's competition after so far going down to the Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs. Hlekani, who will join the Lions at the end of the season, was one of the big stars of the Junior Boks team that won the recent World Championship in Italy. He played Varsity Cup rugby and also ran out for Western Province. In June 2022 the Lesotho-born Ekeji, of Nigerian descent, attended an NFL Africa camp in Ghana with the hope of playing American gridiron, having been selected to be a part of the International Player Pathways scheme. He however failed to secure a contract and is now back in South Africa and set to turn out for the Sharks. Coach JP Pietersen, buoyed by his team's brave effort against the Cheetahs last weekend in going down 5-7, has stuck with his young blood and has handed Junior Springbok heavyweight Bathobele Hlekani his first start this season. The 20-year-old will be playing in his familiar role at flank, although he made his debut for the Sharks XV last year, also in week four, but selected at lock. Another change in the pack sees Bryce Calvert returning at hooker for Jacques Marais. Deon Slabbert is in for Corne Rahl at lock, and Matt Romao takes over at flank from Tino Mavesere. SA Under-20 star Ceano Everson replaces Bradley Davids at scrumhalf in the first of the backline changes, while fans get to see wing Paschal Ekeji for the first time. UJ celebrates Women's Day with 7th Imbokodo Rugby Sevens tournament
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly hosted the 7th edition of the Imbokodo Rugby Sevens Tournament on August 9 and 10, 2025, in celebration of Women's Day. This year's tournament featured an impressive lineup of 38 teams competing across four categories, including six schools and eight rugby clubs. Lesego Malebadi, head of women's rugby at UJ, expressed the university's commitment to showcasing women's rugby and the talent present at all age levels. 'UJ values this tournament because it highlights the growth of women's rugby. A few years ago, we did not have U14 or U16 teams participating, but now we want to demonstrate that the sport has expanded,' Malebadi stated. She emphasised the importance of grassroots development, noting that the tournament now includes U14, U16, U18, and senior teams. 'When we started this event, we only had seniors playing, but now we have all age groups across all fields participating. This growth means a lot to us at UJ,' she added. Malebadi also reflected on the tournament's longevity, revealing that it began with just four participating teams. 'The whole idea behind this tournament is to celebrate women in rugby because we felt that we were not celebrated enough. There was talent, but we were not out there. Now, with 38 teams participating, it shows significant growth in the sport,' she explained. She highlighted the increasing support for women in sports and rugby, noting that the involvement of sponsors has contributed to the tournament's success. 'The longevity of this event is exciting, and we are thrilled to host the largest tournament we have ever had,' Malebadi concluded.
