TCU tops Notre Dame as Hailey Van Lith shines to reach fifth career Elite Eight

New York Times29-03-2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — TCU's historic season survived a nail-biting 71-62 win over No. 3 seed Notre Dame on Saturday.
The win sends the Horned Frogs to their first Elite Eight in program history and continues a remarkable turnaround season for coach Mark Campbell after finishing 21-12 and missing the NCAA Tournament last season.

In what was expected to be a back-and-forth game, TCU hung with the Irish even when they went down by nine points with 5:51 left in the third quarter. The Horned Frogs used the free throw line to cut into that third-quarter deficit, making 8-of-8 shots from the line and turning up the physicality.
Led by a wealth of experience from its transfer-heavy team, the Horned Frogs outscored the Irish 14-6 to end the third quarter and trailed by one point. Hailey Van Lith led TCU with 26 points and had a key steal and block to spark the third-quarter turnaround.
TCU will meet the winner of No. 1 seed Texas and No. 5 seed Tennessee in the Elite Eight with a trip to the first Final Four on the line.
When Campbell took over the program last season, he knew he had a rebuild coming. He took over a program that not only had never been to the Sweet 16 but hadn't made the NCAA Tournament in 14 straight seasons.
He decided to rely heavily on the transfer portal in hopes of jump-starting some success, and it paid off.
Van Lith took over in the second half, but center Sedona Prince was the catalyst inside on Saturday with 21 points and six rebounds. In fact, TCU got no points from its bench, all of its 71 points came from its starters, who were transfers.
All Van Lith has done in her career is win.
The graduate senior guard made the Elite Eight three times at Louisville, including one Final Four, an Elite Eight last year with LSU and is now the leading cog for the Horned Frogs this year.
Van Lith's offensive game was on full display, as she made 10-of-21 shots, but it was her defense that sparked a turnaround in the third quarter.
With TCU down nine points she made two straight baskets, forced a steal on Notre Dame's Sonia Citron and then had a block on the next defensive possession.

Van Lith is known for her competitiveness and has been TCU's leader all season and showed up again Saturday, in a big way. The Washington native scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half.
The Irish struggled on the boards against TCU, losing the rebounding battle 38-32 to the Horned Frogs, but they also struggled to score inside and out.
Notre Dame shot just 31 percent from the field in the game and made just 3-of-15 shots from 3.
The Irish battled inside with TCU, but the size seemed to be too much as the Irish couldn't convert contested layups and couldn't open things up from deep in key moments.
This is the fourth year in a row that Notre Dame has lost in the Sweet 16 under coach Niele Ivey.

2025 NBA Draft: Presumed No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, 12 others invited to green room at Barclays Center

The first wave of invitees to the 2025 NBA Draft is here. Thirteen players received formal invitations on Tuesday to attend the draft and sit in the green room later this month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, according to ESPN's Jonathan Givony. Among that group, obviously, is former Duke star and presumed No. 1 overall pick Copper Flagg. Advertisement Flagg was joined by Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, VJ Edgecombe, Tre Johnson, Khaman Maluach, Jeremiah Fears, Kon Knueppel, Kasparas Jakučionis, Egor Demin, Carter Bryant, Derik Queen and Asa Newell, per the report. Another 11 invitations are expected to be sent out in the near future. Players who attend the draft are allowed to invite six people to sit with them at their table, which will be located in front of the NBA Draft podium in the arena. While an invitation is no guarantee by any means, receiving one is generally considered a good sign for a player when it comes to their draft stock. Of the 13 players who have been invited, nine of them were projected to be lottery picks in the latest mock draft from Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor . All 13 were safely projected to go in the first round. Flagg has long been considered the favorite to go No. 1 overall in the draft later this month after his lone season with the Blue Devils, where he averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds while helping them reach the Final Four. The 18-year-old also earned consensus National Player of the Year honors. Advertisement The Dallas Mavericks, just months removed from the turmoil that came after trading away star Luka Dončić, won the NBA Draft lottery for the first time in franchise history. They had just a 1.8% chance to do so. The Mavericks and Flagg have a workout set for next week , and neither team has another workout on the books before the draft. All signs are pointing toward the Mavericks selecting Flagg first. The first round of the NBA Draft is set for June 25. This is the second year where the draft is split up into two days.

Texas A&M star OF selected 10th overall in latest USA TODAY 2025 MLB mock draft

Texas A&M star OF selected 10th overall in latest USA TODAY 2025 MLB mock draft Texas A&M's 2025 baseball season fell short of its lofty preseason expectations, finishing 30-26 with just 11 wins in SEC play and missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2006 season. This led to Texas A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts deciding to keep head coach Michael Earley, which split the fan base 50/50. However, Earley doesn't deserve all the blame for what went down last season. However, despite his midseason struggles at the plate, junior outfielder Jace LaViolette sealed his legendary status in College Station after playing with a broken hand against LSU in the SEC Tournament, producing two of the Aggies' three runs in the 4-3 loss, eliminating A&M's playoff hopes. Still, LaViolette is now Texas A&M's career home run leader and is more than likely departing the program this summer ahead of the 2025 MLB Draft. While returning for a final season is not out of the question, especially to help fix his strikeout issues, it's assumed that LaViolette will forego his collegiate eligibility due to his standing in the latest USA TODAY MLB mock draft, predicted to be selected 10th overall by the Chicago White Sox. "From 1/1 favorite to who knows, LaViolette's slide stops with the White Sox, whose revamped hitting program could be the panacea for a slugger whose platform junior year fizzled. LaViolette regressed from .305, 29 homers, 1.175 OPS to .257, 18 and 1.003, and his K rate nudged upward, to 25.2." This is not out of the realm of realistic possibility, and would be somewhat comical given that former Texas A&M star outfielder Braden Montgomery is currently a rising star in the White Sox organization. LaViolette's 6'6" frame and elite power are the primary reasons that he won't slide past the Top 10 or 15 in the draft. Cowboys learn tourney schedule

Last November, the Cowboys used a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to help build the camaraderie that led to a historic season. McNeese State hopes to do that again this year. The Cowboys will be the headline act at the four-team field for the 2025 Cayman Islands Classic, which runs November 23-25. 'We're thrilled to participate in such a prestigious event, set in one of the most beautiful locations in the world,' said McNeese head coach Bill Armstrong. 'Competing against three programs with strong traditions of postseason success will be a significant early test for our team. Each matchup will present unique challenges and provide a valuable gauge of our current standing. 'It's a great opportunity to learn, grow, and identify the areas we need to improve as we prepare for conference play.' McNeese is coming off a 28-7 campaign that saw the Cowboys win their second straight Southland Conference championship, marking the first time in program history. The Cowboys also won their first NCAA Tournament game ever, upsetting Clemson 69-67 in the opening round of the Midwest Regional in Providence, Rhode Island. McNeese would lose its second-round match against Big Ten powerhouse Purdue. Armstrong takes over the Cowboys following Will Wade's departure for North Carolina State last March. He was able to retain four key members from last year's team, including starters Javohn Garcia and sharpshooter DJ Richards. Garcia was the Southland Conference's Player of the Year last season. With eight or nine new players on the roster, Armstrong will use this trip to continue building the Cowboys' team unity. 'It is important that we use trips like this to come together as a team,' Armstrong said. 'It will be great for an educational experience and a chance for us to bond as a group. 'We will also get a chance to play some good teams at a time when we are still trying to figure things out. I would rather play a tournament setting because there is a prize, but getting these three games against like competition will be big for us.' McNeese will be joined by George Washington, Murray State and Middle Tennessee State in the round-robin event. 'We're excited to welcome these outstanding programs to this year's Cayman Islands Classic,' said Joe Wright, owner and chief executive officer of Caymax Sports Ltd. 'They're in for a first-class experience — both on the court and in the beautiful Cayman Islands. It's going to be a special week of competition, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories for teams and fans alike.' The Cowboys will open the tourney, which is in its seventh year, against George Washington on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m., Lake Charles time. Middle Tennessee State and Murray State will play the night's second game. The following night, the Cowboys will play Murray State in the late game, roughly 6:30 p.m., with Middle Tennessee and GW in the opener. McNeese will open the final night with a 4 p.m. game against Middle Tennessee in John Gray Gymnasium in George Town, Grand Cayman. Middle Tennessee State went 22–12 in 2024-25, advancing to the National Invitation Tournament under head coach Nick McDevitt. Chris Caputo returns for his third year as head coach at George Washington, which plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Ryan Miller enters his first year as head coach at the Missouri Valley Conference's Murray State, looking to improve on the team's 16–17 record from last year. The Cowboys are still looking to fill the final two games of their schedule in hopes of finding a pair of Power 4 opponents. Tournament Schedule (all times central) Sunday, Nov. 23 McNeese vs. George Washington, 4 p.m. Middle Tennessee vs. Murray State, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24 Middle Tennessee vs. George Washington, 4 p.m. McNeese vs. Murray State, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25 Murray State vs. George Washington, 4 p.m. McNeese vs. Middle Tennessee, 6:30 p.m.
