Chopper's coffers boosted

Mark Campbell (right), from the Broken Pistons Motorcycle Club, hands over $500 to Westpac's Andy Bradley. The club held a poker run to raise money for the Otago rescue chopper. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED Westpac Bank staff in Oamaru were busy raising money for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter service last week. The service visits the Waitaki area roughly every second day and Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust chairman Martin Dippie said the public's generosity was essential to keep its choppers and specialised crews operating. Westpac Oamaru staff Andy Bradley, Colleen Newberry, Jo Mallinson, Tara Martin, Anita Mavor, and Nicki Johnston, at last Sunday's fundraising barbecue. "We take great pride in providing the Otago-Southland communities with first-class medical care in some of their greatest times of need, and we rely on the generosity of our community to keep our choppers in the air," Mr Dippie said. "The money raised goes towards things like new equipment, maintenance and staff training, which cost more every year, making public support that much more valuable." All the money raised will go to the regional rescue helicopter in Otago. — APL

Top seeds South Carolina, UCLA women reach Final Four

At least two No. 1 seeds will be in the Final Four of women's NCAA Tournament. Two more could book trips to Tampa, Florida, on Monday. South Carolina kept its repeat championship hopes alive and reached its fifth straight Final Four with a grinding 54-50 win over Duke on Sunday. The Gamecocks will face the winner between top-seeded Texas and TCU on Monday in their bid to become the first repeat NCAA champion since UConn's run of four straight from 2013-16. UCLA followed that up with an impressive performance, knocking off third-seeded LSU 72-65 behind another big game by Lauren Betts. The 6-foot-7 All-American had 17 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots despite sitting out the second quarter. UCLA will face the winner of Monday's Elite Eight game between No. 1 seed Southern California and No. 2 seed UConn. Texas (34-3) vs. TCU (34-3), Birmingham, Alabama. Former Big 12 rivals will play for a spot in the Final Four. The Frogs are in the Elite Eight for the first time. Coach Mark Campbell's 'Under Frogs' went from having to hold open tryouts to find enough healthy players to the cusp of a Final Four behind the trio of Sedona Prince, Haley Van Lith and Madison Conner. Prince has been nearly unstoppable inside, the well-traveled Van Lith scored 26 points in a Sweet 16 win over Notre Dame, and Conner is shooting 45% from 3. The Frogs will need to click on all cylinders if they're going to beat the top-seeded Longhorns. Texas has one of the nation's best defenses and is holding NCAA Tournament opponents to 56 points per game. The Longhorns also have All-American Madison Booker. The 6-foot-1 forward was the Southeastern Conference player of the year and is averaging 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds. She's part of a dominating front line that includes 6-4 Taylor Jones and 6-6 center Kyla Oldacre, so the Frogs will have their hands full inside. USC (31-3) vs. UConn (34-3), Spokane, Washington. UConn All-American Paige Bueckers has been one of college basketball's best players during her time in Storrs, with the only missing part of her resume a national championship. The 6-foot guard has done her best to get that title, dominating throughout her final March Madness. She scored 34 points against South Dakota State in the second round and topped that with a career-high 40 in a Sweet 16 win over Oklahoma. USC will be without its best player, All-American JuJu Watkins. She suffered a season-ending knee injury against Mississippi State in the second round, but it didn't slow the Trojans in a Sweet 16 win over Kansas State. Freshman Kennedy Smith stepped into the void left by Watkins, scoring 19 points in the 67-61 victory. Every game of the women's tournament will be aired — here is a schedule — on ESPN's networks and streaming services with select games on ABC. The top four betting favorites at the start Sweet 16 week were (in order): UConn, South Carolina, UCLA and Texas, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. There were 31 automatic bids that went to conference champions and they were combined with 37 at-large picks by the NCAA selection committee. Selection Sunday unveiled the bracket matchups. First- and second-round games concluded Monday on campuses across the country. Sweet 16 weekend (March 28-31) put games at two sites once again: Birmingham, Alabama, and Spokane, Washington. The Final Four is in Tampa on Friday, with the championship game next Sunday. A year ago, the championship game drew a bigger television audience than the men's title game for the first time, with an average of 18.9 million viewers watching undefeated South Carolina beat Iowa and superstar Caitlin Clark. TCU tops Notre Dame as Hailey Van Lith shines to reach fifth career Elite Eight

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — TCU's historic season survived a nail-biting 71-62 win over No. 3 seed Notre Dame on Saturday. The win sends the Horned Frogs to their first Elite Eight in program history and continues a remarkable turnaround season for coach Mark Campbell after finishing 21-12 and missing the NCAA Tournament last season. Advertisement In what was expected to be a back-and-forth game, TCU hung with the Irish even when they went down by nine points with 5:51 left in the third quarter. The Horned Frogs used the free throw line to cut into that third-quarter deficit, making 8-of-8 shots from the line and turning up the physicality. Led by a wealth of experience from its transfer-heavy team, the Horned Frogs outscored the Irish 14-6 to end the third quarter and trailed by one point. Hailey Van Lith led TCU with 26 points and had a key steal and block to spark the third-quarter turnaround. TCU will meet the winner of No. 1 seed Texas and No. 5 seed Tennessee in the Elite Eight with a trip to the first Final Four on the line. When Campbell took over the program last season, he knew he had a rebuild coming. He took over a program that not only had never been to the Sweet 16 but hadn't made the NCAA Tournament in 14 straight seasons. He decided to rely heavily on the transfer portal in hopes of jump-starting some success, and it paid off. Van Lith took over in the second half, but center Sedona Prince was the catalyst inside on Saturday with 21 points and six rebounds. In fact, TCU got no points from its bench, all of its 71 points came from its starters, who were transfers. All Van Lith has done in her career is win. The graduate senior guard made the Elite Eight three times at Louisville, including one Final Four, an Elite Eight last year with LSU and is now the leading cog for the Horned Frogs this year. Van Lith's offensive game was on full display, as she made 10-of-21 shots, but it was her defense that sparked a turnaround in the third quarter. With TCU down nine points she made two straight baskets, forced a steal on Notre Dame's Sonia Citron and then had a block on the next defensive possession. Advertisement Van Lith is known for her competitiveness and has been TCU's leader all season and showed up again Saturday, in a big way. The Washington native scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half. The Irish struggled on the boards against TCU, losing the rebounding battle 38-32 to the Horned Frogs, but they also struggled to score inside and out. Notre Dame shot just 31 percent from the field in the game and made just 3-of-15 shots from 3. The Irish battled inside with TCU, but the size seemed to be too much as the Irish couldn't convert contested layups and couldn't open things up from deep in key moments. This is the fourth year in a row that Notre Dame has lost in the Sweet 16 under coach Niele Ivey.
