Ten Takeaways from the Houston Texans' Preseason Game against Minnesota
Mills led Houston's first and only touchdown drive of the game and unveiled the new offense under Nick Caley for the first time. He went 4/5 for 50 yards and a touchdown to veteran, free agent receiver Braxton Berrios. While there is no competition at QB in Houston, fans can sleep soundly knowing that the team possesses two capable QBs.
2. The toughest cut will be at the wide receiver position
The receivers showed out in their first preseason game with John Metchie III's five catches on eight targets, Berrios' touchdown, and Xavier Hutchinson's two strong receptions.
The Texans tend to keep six receivers, but with Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins, and Jaylin Noel all locks, the three above receivers must compete for two spots.
3. Darrell Taylor will be a great addition to the defensive line
Taylor was the most dominant pass rusher on the team. His PFF grade of 66.9 led all defensive linemen. He generated a consistent pass rush throughout the first half and supported the run game by funnelling plays back into the teeth of the defense. He has been flourishing with Denico Autry and Derek Barnett out throughout training camp.
4. E.J. Speed brings the SWARM mentality
No defensive player stood out more in the preseason game than Speed. He tallied three tackles, a tackle for loss, and broke up a pass. His 92.0 PFF grade led the entire team. Speed had a huge hit in the first quarter to shut down a run play on the boundary. While he currently is the backup, Speed brings depth and tenacity to the linebacker group.
5. Mertz looks healthy, but not ready for the bright lights
Three interceptions in a row is a death knell for a rookie QB. Low passes, tipped balls, and errant throws due to miscommunication ruined Mertz's first game back since tearing his ACL last October at Florida. He looked distinctly worse than second-year QB Kedon Slovis. Mertz wasn't in the competition to make the roster, but he has a lot to prove to earn a spot on the Texans' practice squad at this point.
6. Texans' secondary depth isn't as talented as hoped
Injuries to C.J. Garner-Johnson and rookie Jaylen Reed zapped the depth out of this elite group. The Texans' second and third-string defensive backs struggled in protection and gave up multiple deep throws in the third and fourth quarters. Namely, Russ Yeast, M.J. Stewart, and rookie Jaylin Smith were targeted quite often in the passing game. Hopefully, Houston can get back either CJDJ or Reed soon to bolster the depth in this important positional group.
7. The offense trusts Dare Ogumbowale
All the hype this offseason has been around rookie fourth-rounder Woody Marks and 2024 sixth-rounder Jawhar Jordan, but it was Ogumbowale who had the most productive outing. With Nick Chubb, Joe Mixon, and Dameon Pierce not participating in this game, the healthy trio of Ogumbowale, Marks, and Jordan carried the backfield. Ogumbowale led with five carries for 29 yards, while Jordan only amassed 18 yards on six runs.
8. New faces on offense, still the same issues
Houston racked up multiple false starts and holding calls on offense, the bane of this team's existence. Zach Thomas and Blake Fisher each committed a false start, and neither looked particularly capable on Saturday either. Maybe there's something in the water at NRG, but nothing seems to kick the issues plaguing the offensive line.
9. The Gary Kubiak System is BACK
Bootlegs, play-action passes, and three-step drops under center… what is this, 2008? The first preseason game delivered a live-action demonstration of the Nick Caley offense. Caley comes from the Sean McVay and New England Patriots systems, which are predicated on play action and short passes. While I can't imagine the new offensive coordinator showed all (or any) of his cards on Saturday, it is intriguing to see the Texans run such a familiar system once again.
10. C.J. Stroud criticism for not participating is warranted
The Texans are trying to win a Super Bowl. They have a completely new offense, offensive line, rookie receivers, and a rookie running back. They all need reps together with the starting QB. Waiting until the season for those reps to occur is unprofessional and weak. It's one thing for them to practice together; it's another to test them in the preseason. While Stroud had a fantastic rookie campaign, that doesn't mean he should be exempt from improving through preseason games.

LA 2028 to sell venue name rights in Olympic first
Organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will sell naming rights for some competition venues to "unlock an additional revenue stream" in a move that breaks with Games tradition of forbidding brand names on stadiums and arenas. In a statement released on Thursday, LA28 organizers said the "landmark change" will apply to featured venues in support of the "largest commercial revenue raise in sports". "From the moment we submitted our bid, LA28 committed to reimagining what's possible for the Games," LA28 chairperson and president Casey Wasserman said in a statement. "Today's historic announcement delivers on that promise, creating the first-ever venue naming rights program in Olympic and Paralympic history while advancing LA28's mission of a fully privately funded and no-new-build Games." Contracts are already in place with automaker Honda, an LA28 sponsor which already has the naming rights for the Anaheim, California, arena that will host volleyball, and with media and technology company Comcast -- which will have its name on the temporary squash venue. As previously announced, Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles will host boxing and weightlifting. Wasserman said the "groundbreaking partnerships" will generate revenue beyond what is already budgeted and "will introduce a new commercial model to benefit the entire (Olympic) movement". "We're grateful to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for making this transformation possible," he added. Naming rights for up to 19 temporary venues will be available, with the IOC's sponsorship partners and LA28 partners having a chance to put their names on Games venues. Companies that already have their names on such Olympic venues as SoFi Stadium and Arena "will have the opportunity to keep existing venue naming rights during Games time", Wasserman indicated. Atletico Madrid and Juventus open surprise talks over double deal
Atletico Madrid were expected to do little more business in the transfer market, but with the La Liga kick-off a little over 24 hours away, Los Colchoneros are now involved in talks with Juventus over two players. The word coming from the Metropolitano was that Los Rojiblancos would not be doing any more business this summer unless there were exits, beyond that of forward Carlos Martin. However two reports have emerged out of the blue. Discussions for Nicolas Gonzalez Matteo Moretto has reported that Atletico Madrid have opened talks for Juventus winger Nicolas Gonzalez, in a move that could be a permanent deal. The Argentina international is not a key part of Juventus' plans, just a season after arriving at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. The Biaconeri spent €36.5m on Gonzalez over the course of his loan and permanent move from Fiorentina. The 27-year-old is open to the move. Juventus interested in Nahuel Molina Image viaMeanwhile less than an hour apart, German Garcia Grova of TyC Sports has assured that La Vecchia Signora have also opened talks with Atletico for right-back Nahuel Molina. He was linked with an exit earlier in the window, and has a deal until 2027. Garcia explains that Gonzalez is an option that has been discussed as a result of Juve not meeting Atletico's asking price. Surprise moves for Atletico Madrid Last month it seemed as if Molina would be on his way out, but more recently it had been reported that Los Rojiblancos were happy to hold onto him. Similarly, in the final third, Giacomo Raspadori's signing from Napoli was thought to be their last bit of business excepting a departure. It may well be that Diego Simeone sees both Molina and Gonzalez as right wing-backs or midfielders, rather than right-backs, which from a squad planning perspective could make more sense.

NCAA informs Michigan ruling on sign-stealing investigation will be released Friday, AP source says
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The NCAA has informed Michigan that the organization will announce the results of its sign-stealing investigation on Friday, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share the details. The NCAA alleged last year in a notice that current coach Sherrone Moore violated rules as an assistant under former coach Jim Harbaugh, who served a three-game suspension in exchange for the Big Ten dropping its investigation into the allegations after the two ended up in court. Moore also was accused of deleting text messages with sign-stealer Connor Stalions before they were recovered and provided to the NCAA. Moore has previously said he has and will continue to cooperate with the NCAA's investigation, but recently declined to say much about the issue looming over the college football program with the most victories. 'Today, not tomorrow, that's all I'm worried about,' he said on Monday. The NCAA investigation surfaced early in the 2023 season amid allegations that Michigan used a robust in-person scouting and sign-stealing operation conducted by Stalions, a former a low-level staffer. He was suspended by the school and later resigned. Stalions, who did not participate in the NCAA investigation, recently said he knew almost every signal opponents used in seven games over two seasons. Michigan has been prepared to suspend Moore for two games during the coming season as part of self-imposed sanctions. The NCAA will announce soon whether that punishment is enough to address allegations that Moore failed to cooperate in an investigation. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti sent a letter to the NCAA Committee on Infractions last month, suggesting that Michigan's football program should not face more sanctions related to the sign-stealing saga. After winning the 2023 national championship, Harbaugh left to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. The Wolverines open the season on Aug. 30 at home against New Mexico State and then play at Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman, on Sept. 6. Harbaugh was suspended by the Big Ten, three weeks after an investigation by the NCAA into the allegations began. Hours later, Michigan asked a court for an injunction and temporary restraining order and the two sides narrowly avoided a court hearing. Harbaugh has repeatedly denied any involvement in Stalions' apparent scheme. The NCAA does not have rules against stealing signs, but does prohibit schools from sending scouts to the games of future opponents and using electronic equipment to record another team's signals. Multiple Big Ten schools had records showing ticket purchases under Stalions' name and video surveillance footage of people in those seats with cell phones pointed toward the field. Big Ten coaches and athletic directors previously pushed Petitti to punish Harbaugh before the NCAA concluded its investigation. When the Big Ten did suspend Harbaugh, Michigan claimed the commissioner overstepped his authority and acted outside the conference's bylaws. Athletic director Warde Manuel released a scathing statement just before Michigan kicked off at Penn State and won 24-15 without Harbaugh on the sideline.
