Phillies' Rob Thomson Reacts to Aaron Nola Injury Setback, 'I Have No Idea' originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt a dose of horrible news on Tuesday, June 10th, when it was announced that starting pitcher Aaron Nola suffered a setback in his recovery. What was extra surprising about the setback as his injury had nothing to do with his initial injury, which landed him on the injured list.

Nola reportedly suffered a stress fracture in his ribs, which only came to light after an MRI. He is now unlikely to pitch until after the All-Star break and will miss significantly more time than initially anticipated.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic shared Rob Thomson's reaction to the news, and he revealed what he knew about what happened to Nola amid this horrible and strange injury update.
"I have no idea," Thomson said. "Because he doesn't really remember the moment that it happened. He just woke up one day, and it was sore."
That comment from Thomson, that no one knows how the injury occurred, is concerning. While Nola should be able to recover, his fractured ribs aren't a minor injury. Not knowing its origin is another odd turn in the saga that's become Nola's 2025.

In the 2025 offseason, Nola signed a huge nine-year, $170 million contract extension to stay in Philadelphia. His first year in that new deal hasn't gone well. The 32-year-old is off to the worst start of his career, not including his injury, which will stop Nola from continuing his streak of 30-plus games started for the Phillies.

Through his first nine starts of the season, Nola has a 6.16 ERA and a 1-7 record. Nola, in his 11th season in the MLB, has been struggling on the mound. Across his 49.2 innings pitched, Nola has 52 strikeouts, 16 walks, and has allowed 11 home runs.
After leading the National League in home runs allowed in 2024, Nola once again has struggled to contain the long ball in 2025. While Nola has struggled on the mound, his off-the-field setback is the real concern.
Thomson's update on Nola, that the origin of the injury is unknown, is a strange twist in the ongoing Nola injury situation. While the origin of the injury is unknown, Nola is expected back after the All-Star break. In the meantime, Mick Abel and the rest of the Phillies staff have to step up in Nola's absence.

Caitlin Clark Bracing For Punishment After Fever-Liberty Game

Caitlin Clark Bracing For Punishment After Fever-Liberty Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark returned from injury on Saturday afternoon when Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty came to town. Advertisement Clark suffered her quad strain on May 24 against the Liberty, forcing her to miss the Fever's next five contests. Indiana dropped 3-of-5 games, falling to 4-5 heading into Saturday. In her return, it didn't take Clark long to show off her competitive spirit. With 4:37 left in the second quarter, Clark was arguing an out-of-bounds call with the officials, but she may have gone too far, picking up her first technical foul of the 2025 WNBA season. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin ClarkGrace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Fever wound up challenging the out-of-bounds call after Clark's technical, but it was upheld, and Indiana was charged with a timeout. Ionescu made the technical free throw. Advertisement Barring the league rescinding the technical foul, Clark likely has a $200 fine coming her way. In the WNBA, a player's first three technical fouls each result in a $200 fine. The next three (4-6) result in a $400 fine each. And seven or more technicals will end with a $800 charge. However, the WNBA changed the technical foul rules around this season, likely due to the increase in scheduled games from 40 to 44. In recent seasons, a seventh tech would also lead to a suspension. However, this year, they increased that number to eight. However, Clark may be used to paying some of these fines. During her rookie year, she picked up six technical fouls, which ended up being $1,800 in total fines. Diana Taurasi, Natasha Cloud and Teaira McCowan led the league with seven techs apiece. Woeful Rockies absorb 2 records for futility with 19 whiffs and worst 70-game mark in modern era

ATLANTA (AP) — Kyle Farmer just shrugged when asked about being part of a Colorado team that just made MLB history with the worst 70-game record in the modern era. 'We don't care,' Farmer said after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves left the Rockies with a 13-57 record. The Rockies surpassed the 1932 Boston Red Sox, who were 14-56, for the worst 70-game mark since 1901. 'I mean, there's nothing we can do about it,' Farmer said. 'It is what it is. We've just got to show up tomorrow and play. There's nothing you can really say about it except that if it happens, it happens.' The Rockies made more inglorious history by setting a franchise nine-inning record with 19 strikeouts. That's a lot of futility for one team to absorb in one day. The 19 strikeouts by Braves pitchers also set an Atlanta record for a nine-inning game. Spencer Strider recorded 13 strikeouts in six innings, followed by relievers Rafael Montero and Dylan Lee, who combined for six more whiffs. The only bright spot for the Rockies was the encouraging start by rookie right-hander Chase Dollander, a native of Evans, Georgia, who allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. Dollander said 'just having a neutral mindset' is the key to remaining positive through a season already filled with low points for the team. 'Don't ride the roller coaster,' Dollander said. 'You know, there's going to be lots of ups and downs in this game. This game is really hard. So it's just, you know, staying neutral and we just keep going.' Dollander was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 summer draft. Among other top young players on the team are catcher Hunter Goodman, who may return to Atlanta for the All-Star Game on July 15, and outfielders Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle. 'You know we're going to have our time,' Dollander said. 'I mean, it's just one of those things that you kind of learn as you go. I've been very fortunate to be here for a little bit now, and I can help us going forward.' 'For sure, keeping guys accountable and teaching them the right way to do stuff,' said Farmer, the first baseman whose double off Strider was one of only four hits for the Rockies. 'Keeping their heads up and they've got to show up each day and play, no matter our record. It's your job and you worked your whole life to get here. Enjoy it. This is a great opportunity for a young guy to show what they can do.' ___

WNBA Reacts to Caitlin Clark News on Saturday

WNBA Reacts to Caitlin Clark News on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star point guard Caitlin Clark will play on Saturday against the New York Liberty for the first time since May. Advertisement Clark injured her left quad on May 24 against the Liberty and missed five consecutive games. 'There was imaging done to tell that my leg is okay," Clark said on Friday. "So I can find confidence in that we know we weren't able to find anything or see anything and that was kind of my all clear. "Then honestly, just sprinting. As you know, change of direction and sprinting in the game of basketball, that's the biggest part of it. So feeling comfortable to be able to do those types of things and those types of movements. I've been doing that for a little bit now and I feel really confident in that.' Clark is one of the most popular WNBA players and the league seems to know it. Advertisement On Saturday, the WNBA's X account reacted to Clark making her return to the court for the Fever, who are 4-5 on the season. Clark averages 19 points, 6 rebounds and 9.3 assists this season for the Fever while shooting 40.3% from the field, 31.4% from beyond the arc and 75.0% from the free-throw line. The 23-year-old Clark won the 2024 Rookie of the Year Award. She's averaging 19.2 points and 8.5 assists in 44 WNBA games with Indiana. Clark's best game as a pro came last season against the Dallas Wings. She put up 35 points and eight assists on Sept. 15, 2024. She helped the Fever make the postseason last year and is hoping to do the same again this year. Advertisement "Ty [Tyrese Haliburton] and I would both tell you this is where we both hope to stay the rest of our careers," Clark told ESPN. "People are like, 'It's a small market.' But no, that's what makes it fun. These people, this is what means the world to them."
