15 Best Ways to Experience LGBTQ+ Berlin, From Gay Bars to Bookstores

Few cities feel as unapologetically queer as Berlin. A hundred years ago, this was the heart of the world's first LGBTQ+ rights movement. Weimar cabarets, cross-dressing revues, and radical thinkers made space for gender and sexual freedom, decades before most places dared to do so. This momentum was violently interrupted by the rise of Nazism, but never entirely halted. Today, Berlin ranks among the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities on Earth, not just in attitude, but in action. The city's queer identity runs deep in its neighborhoods and districts, from Schöneberg's rainbow-draped bars and bookstores to Kreuzberg's energetic activism, Neukölln's trendy pop-up venues, and Prenzlauer Berg's brunch spots, which attract diverse weekend crowds.
Even the tourism infrastructure reflects this: The Pink Pillow initiative by Visit Berlin connects travelers with LGBTQ-friendly hotels, while the Queer City Pass grants discounts for queer-friendly museums, clubs, and shops, alongside a public transport pass. Whether you're here for Christopher Street Day (a.k.a. Berlin Pride), a weekend escape, or finding the stories that inspired Cabaret, Berlin is one of the world's greatest cities for LGBTQ+ visitors.

Berlin by day
A Berlin institution for nearly 50 years, Prinz Eisenherz sits among Motzstraße's historic gay bars. Shelves are stocked with books on queer theory, graphic novels, and a solid range of English-language titles. The events space hosts exhibitions and talks, and the staff offer some of the city's best insider tips.
Address: Motzstr. 23, 10777 Berlin
Part gallery, part concept store, Keller Kreuzberg showcases over 100 queer-owned local and international brands, covering everything from prints to homeware. The space is proudly inclusive and sex-positive, with products reflecting a wide range of queer identities. It also supports local artists with exhibition space and regular pop-up events. Note that this place is open only on weekdays.
Address: Reichenbergerstr. 48, 10999 Berlin
Queer walking tours
In recent years, a wave of queer walking tours has sprung up across Berlin, tracing LGBTQ+ history from the Weimar era to today. Expect stories of Magnus Hirschfeld, Marlene Dietrich, and Christopher Isherwood woven through the Schöneberg district, the heart of Berlin's queer past and present. Some, like the drag-led Kieztour, infuse flair and local gossip, while others, such as Queer Berlin, offer a more reflective look at city-wide sites that shaped contemporary queer life in this city.
Address: Meeting points vary
Inaugurated in 2008 on the edge of Tiergaten, this understated gray concrete monument is one of the most moving sites in Berlin's queer landscape. Viewed through a peephole, a rolling video installation honors LGBTQ+ lives lost under the Third Reich. The inscription 'A Simple Kiss Could Land You In Trouble' is a chilling reminder of how a flourishing queer culture can be brutally silenced.

Doechii Cancels Appearances at Three Music Festivals

Doechii won't be performing at three music festivals she was scheduled to play at this weekend. On Monday, All Points East, Rock en Seine, and Forwards Festival announced that the rap star would no longer be performing, although no reason was given for the cancellations. 'Unfortunately, Doechii will no longer be able to perform at All Points East on Saturday, August 23rd,' High Points East wrote on its Instagram. 'We'd like to apologise to any disappointed fans and hope to welcome Doechii to All Points East in the future.' More from Rolling Stone A Fashion Editor's Guide to Burning Man 2025: What to Wear, Where to Shop Doechii Is Coming to You Live From the Swamp on Upcoming Tour: See the Dates Twice and Doechii Take Over Lollapalooza Day Three In its statement's caption, the festival added that Doechii would 'no longer be performing at her upcoming shows,' seemingly referring to her cancellations at France's Rock en Seine on Aug. 21 and Bristol's Forwards on Aug. 24. A rep for Doechii did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone's request for comment. The three festivals have yet to announce replacement performers ahead of the shows this weekend, although Forwards and All Points East alluded to the rest of their lineup in the caption. Forwards features 'three amazing female headliners' with Jorja Smith, the Last Dinner Party, and Olivia Dean. Doechii was most recently in Belgium for the Pukkelpop festival on Sunday, Aug. 17, and she played San Francisco's Outside Lands and Chicago's Lollapalooza earlier this month. She's set to bring her Live From the Swamp tour to North America in October, and is scheduled for All Things Go fests in New York City and Columbia, Maryland in September. 'This project turned one and before I disappear to create the next world, I'm going back on tour,' the rap queen wrote on Instagram earlier this month, referring to her Alligator Bites Never Heal album. 'The final chapter of this era. Thank you for the memories, the magic, the love — let's close it out together.' GRAMMY, BRIT AND IVOR AWARD-WINNING PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER FRASER T. SMITH TO BE HONOURED WITH THE BMI PRESIDENT'S AWARD AT THE 2025 BMI LONDON AWARDS

The Ceremony Also Celebrates the Top British and European Songwriters, Composers and Music Publishers of the Previous Year LONDON, Aug. 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- BMI today announced that Fraser T. Smith will be presented with the BMI President's Award at the 2025 BMI London Awards held on 29 September at The Dorchester. The multi-award-winning producer, songwriter and musician will be honoured for the remarkable breadth of his career-defining work and collaborations with some of the biggest artists in the world such as Adele, Drake, Sam Smith, Snow Patrol and more. The private event will be hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O'Neill and EVP, Chief Revenue & Creative Officer Mike Steinberg. The ceremony also pays tribute to the British and European songwriters and publishers of the previous year's most-performed songs on US streaming, radio, film, television and visual media from BMI's repertoire of over 22.4 million musical works. The BMI London Song of the Year, Million-Air Awards, and awards for Pop, Film, Television and Cable Television Music will also be presented throughout the evening. "Fraser T. Smith is widely recognized as one of the UK's most influential and sought-after producers and songwriters, whose musical contributions and ability to span genres created some of the most impactful songs of our generation," said O'Neill. "We're thrilled to commemorate his illustrious career as an acclaimed collaborator and a solo artist with the BMI President's Award. We're also excited to celebrate our BMI family of award-winning songwriters and composers and recognize their musical achievements over the last year." Smith has spent much of his career spanning over three decades, producing and songwriting for some of the most prominent artists in the world, including Adele, Craig David, Drake, Florence and the Machine, Gorillaz, Kano, Stormzy, Sam Smith, Snow Patrol and many more. Before becoming one of the UK's most in-demand creators of contemporary music, Smith was a session guitarist in the 1990s, performing on more than 200 records. In 1999, he met a then-unknown Craig David, and was his guitarist for five years before collaborating on three of David's albums, Born to Do It, Slicker Than Your Average and Trust Me. Over the years, Smith has co-written, mixed and produced seven No. 1 singles in the UK, two Billboard No. 1 singles in the US, contributed to 18 No. 1 albums, and has received multiple awards, accolades, and praise from his peers and the media alike. In 2011, Fraser won a GRAMMY for his work on Adele's massively successful album 21 and received his first Ivor Novello nomination for "Broken Strings" by James Morrison the following year. In 2015, Fraser received a GRAMMY nomination for his contributions to Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour and was honored with a Latin GRAMMY for his collaboration with Mexican duo Jesse & Joy on Un Besito Más. Smith was shortlisted for the 2016 Mercury Prize, nominated for a 2017 Brit Award, and won Best Album at the MOBO Awards for his work on Kano's album, Made in the Manor, and was also honored for Stormzy's Brit and Ivor Novello-winning debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer. Most recently, he produced Snow Patrol's album, The Forest Is The Path, the band's first No. 1 album in 18 years, and produced Kae Tempest's critically acclaimed 2025 album, Self-Titled. Smith has received critical acclaim as a solo artist as well. His 2020 debut 12 Questions was recorded under the moniker Future Utopia and featured an incredible roster of artists, including Stormzy, Dave, Kano, Ghetts, Bastille, Es Devlin, Simon Armitage and Idris Elba. Returning earlier this year, Future Utopia released two brand new singles in 2025, kicking the year off with the hypnotic disco inspired "Don't Try This At Home" and teamed up with Lava La Rue on the mesmeric psyche banger "The Pleasure Trap." Smith won an Ivor Novello Award in 2021 for his collaboration with Dave on one of the album's singles "Children of the Internet," marking the second Ivor for the pair, with the first in 2018 for Dave's "Question Time." As a BMI President's Award honouree, Smith joins an elite group of previous recipients including benny blanco, Luis Fonsi, Noel Gallagher, Ellie Goulding, Imagine Dragons, Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, Ludacris, P!nk, Willie Nelson, Pitbull, T-Pain, Taylor Swift, Brian Wilson, and Dwight Yoakam, to name a few.
