Crystal Palace to play in Conference League after CAS appeal dismissed
The decision means Palace will play in the Conference League next season while Nottingham Forest will compete in the Europa League.
Palace chairman Steve Parish and the club's lawyers had their appeal heard by a three-person panel at CAS on Friday after the south London side were demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League for breaching UEFA's multi-club ownership (MCO) rules.

A CAS statement released on Monday read: 'After considering the evidence, the Panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, had shares in CPFC and OL and was a board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA's assessment date. The Panel also dismissed the argument by CPFC that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and OL. The Panel considered that the UEFA Regulations are clear and do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date, as CPFC claimed.'
Palace initially qualified for the Europa League by winning the 2024-25 FA Cup – Eberechi Eze scored the only goal in the Wembley final against Manchester City.
UEFA, however, ruled that Eagle Football's 43 per cent stake in Palace — via its chairman John Textor — was in conflict with its majority stake in French side Lyon after both clubs qualified for the second-tier European competition.
Lyon took precedence over Palace, who finished 12th in the Premier League last term, owing to the higher domestic finish of sixth in Ligue 1.
Forest, meanwhile, finished seventh in the Premier League last season, with UEFA's rules stating the next-best-placed club in the top domestic league of the same association will replace any team who drop out of its continental competitions.
The hearing took place over the course of a single day, and among Palace's arguments put to the Lausanne court was that they had been treated unfairly, which is anti-competitive given that UEFA regulations state that all clubs should be treated fairly.
Palace also believed MCO rules had been applied inconsistently, claiming the March 1 deadline for ensuring compliance with MCO rules had not been evenly applied.
Palace further challenged what they felt was inconsistencies in the rules, by arguing that Textor, who has since sold his 42.92 per cent stake to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, did not have decisive influence at the club and that putting shares into a blind trust while actively trying to sell them would not have been possible.

The second strand of the inconsistency argument was Palace's belief that emails show that clubs which belonged to the European Club Association (ECA) were able to be walked through the process of avoiding a breach of MCO rules.
Palace had requested readmission to the Europa League with Forest's admission rejected, and Forest's situation also came into their argument. Palace made the claim that their fellow Premier League side are effectively in an MCO with Eagle Football's clubs, given their transfer dealings this summer in particular.
Lyon's financial difficulties had thrown their European participation into doubt, with the French football authorities relegating them to Ligue 2, which would have seen them surrender their place in the Europa League, at the end of the season, only for the club to successfully appeal that decision.
Last week, Palace were drawn against either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Danish side Midtjylland in the Conference League play-offs. The first leg is scheduled to take place at Selhurst Park on August 21. The competition's league phase draw is on August 29 before the league phase commences on October 2.
The draw for the league phase of the Europa League, meanwhile, also takes place on August 29 and the league phase begins on September 24.

A tech entrepreneur has acquired Fabergé, the historic luxury brand famous for its ornate jeweled eggs, in a $50 million deal. Technology investor Sergei Mosunov, a Russian national, purchased the company through his U.S.-based investment firm, SMG Capital, more than 10 years after UK-based miner Gemfields acquired Fabergé. Under the agreement, Gemfields will receive $45 million when the sale closes later this month and the remaining $5 million through quarterly royalty payments. Founded by jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé in St. Petersburg, the company created gem-encrusted eggs for Russian emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II between 1885 and 1916. The surviving eggs continue to sell for millions at auctions when they do pop up. The record-holder is the Rothschild Clock Egg, which in 2007 sold for £8.9 million (approximately $18.5 million at the exchange rate at the time). In 2004, Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg bought nine imperial eggs from the Forbes family for more than $90 million, endowing him with one of the largest private collections of Fabergé eggs. Today, Fabergé also makes more modern luxury products like jewelry, including engagement rings and wedding bands, and high-end watches. But continuing to make Fabergé eggs are still the cash cows. A Guilloché enamel strawberry surprise egg, for example, retails for approximately $74,000. Mosunov told the Financial Times that it is 'a great honor for me to become the custodian of such an outstanding and globally recognized brand.' 'Closest thing to Jimmy' - young quick Baker shines for Originals

Table Captain Phil Salt compared 22-year-old fast bowler Sonny Baker to England great James Anderson after he shone in Manchester Originals' 10-run win over London Spirit at Old Trafford. Baker began Spirit's chase of 164 with five dots and conceded only four runs when asked to bowl the first 10 deliveries. He troubled two international greats in David Warner and Kane Williamson, who have a combined 38,000 international runs to their name, with swing and lively pace. That helped limit the Spirit's scoring and, despite Australian Warner hitting 71, the hosts, who left out Anderson after defeats in their opening two games, were always in control. Though others have higher top-end pace, Baker has the second-highest average speed in this year's Hundred at 85.6mph. He was around and above that mark to Warner early on, while also finding significant movement to beat the left-hander with each of his opening three deliveries. After conceding 10 from his first 15 balls, all that was missing from his spell was a wicket. That came when he bowled quickly into the pitch, Turner was hurried and the right-hander skewed a catch into the leg side. While England international Tongue finished with 3-29, it was Baker who was awarded player of the match. "In the first game, opening the bowling with Jimmy Anderson from the Jimmy Anderson end was surreal," Baker said. "I loved every part of it." He described his plans with the new ball as "just trying to bowl fast and swing the new ball". "Especially against the left-handers, my preference is to go away from them," he added. "I was nervous to go too wide [to Warner]. He is a really tough competitor and has been one of the best in the world for a long time. "He picks up really well if you get too straight and cuts well if you are too wide so you have a small margin for error. I really enjoyed the challenge." How big is Baker's future? Baker was awarded his national development contract after a successful winter with the England Lions. He took eight wickets in two red-ball matches in Australia where he impressed the England hierarchy, including Lions coach Andrew Flintoff. That he was given an England contract so early - he had not played a County Championship match before this summer - shows how highly England rate him. Having moved to Hampshire from Somerset at the end of last season, he then took his first County Championship five-wicket haul against champions Surrey in his second match in April. While a call-up for the Ashes this winter appears fanciful, he will likely be part of the Lions group which will shadow the full side in Australia before Christmas. Should injuries hit, a call-up is not impossible. Before then, England's white-ball teams play South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ireland and New Zealand when the current Test bowlers' workloads will be closely managed.
