NDA government in Andhra Pradesh aiding sand and liquor mafias, alleges CPI
Addressing a press conference on Friday, CPI National Executive member and district in-charge Akkineni Vanaja alleged that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who promised to build 'Swarna Andhra Pradesh,' had instead turned it into 'Madhyandhra Pradesh' due to the unchecked liquor trade. She said the free sand policy had turned into a farce, with the poor unable to access it while mafias reaped profits.
Ms. Vanaja criticised the steep hike in power tariffs and the reversal of the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) stand on smart meters. She recalled that HRD Minister Nara Lokesh had opposed smart meters while in the Opposition, but now supports their installation.
Announcing a mass protest on August 5 at electricity offices across the State, Ms. Vanaja said the CPI would demand a rollback of smart meters and recent power sector policies. The party would intensify its agitation if the government fails to respond, she warned.
She also mentioned that the CPI national conference in Chandigarh will deliberate on the Union government's 'destructive policies,' while the State conference, scheduled for August 23–25 in Ongole, will feature 2,000 Red Shirt volunteers and 1,000 women in red sarees.
CPI Eluru District Secretary Mannava Krishna Chaitanya, State Executive Member Dega Prabhakar, and others also spoke at the event. They demanded protection of Kolleru Lake, completion of the Chintalapudi Lift Scheme, compensation for Polavaram evacuees, and revival of the Pedavegi Palm Oil Factory.

Govt to redefine 2022-23 base year for GDP, IIP
New Delhi: The government has proposed 2022-23 as new base year for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Index of Industrial Production (IIP), and 2024 for Consumer Price Index (CPI), Parliament was informed on Wednesday. 'The Ministry is underway to revise the base year of GDP, IIP and CPI. The base year is revised periodically to better capture the structural changes happening in the economy by updating the methodology of compilation and incorporation of new data sources,' Minister of State for Statistics & Programme Implementation said in a written reply to Lok Sabha. For the CPI, list of items and their respective weights derived from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey of 2023-24 is used in the revised index. The Ministry has conducted its first Forward-Looking Survey on Private Corporate Sector CAPEX Investment Intentions from November 2024 to January 2025 and the findings of the survey have been published.

CPI demands hostel facility for girl students
Tirupati: The CPI has demanded the TTD management to provide hostel facility to all the girl students applied for hostel accommodation in SPW Junior College. Party activists, led by city secretary Viswanath staged a protest at the women junior college, when TTD chairman BR Naidu visited the college here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Viswanath said several parents have admitted their daughters in the TTD-run college keeping in view hostel facility for the safety and security of their daughters. Most of the girls studying in the college are from poor financial background from various districts and are not in a position to avail private hostel facility. But the TTD management dilly dallying on expanding hostel facility in tune with the demand, he criticised. Laterm Viswanath along with party activists submitted a memorandum to TTD Chairman Naidu on the hostel issue.

Brinda Karat voices concern against Chhattisgarh's approval for mining in Hasdeo region
In a letter to Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat has opposed a recent Chhattisgarh government's approval of diversion of a large forested land in the Hasdeo region of the State for mining purposes. In her letter, the former MP and Special Invitee, CPI(M) Central Committee, wrote there was no public interest involved in the project and it would only lead to exploitation of mineral resources for private gain. A recommendation letter dated June 26, in which the Forest department has approved the proposal for diversion of forest land for non-forestry purpose — coal excavation work in the Kete Extension Coal Block Open Mine Project of the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam or RNUVL, surfaced online on August 4. In the letter uploaded on government's PARIVESH website, Forest department official from Surguja district Abhishek Jogawat has based the recommendation on a survey done by him. The approval has also faced criticism from the Opposition Congress and environmentalists in the State. Demanding its cancellation, they have accused the ruling BJP of sacrificing the interests of the people of State as well as ecological concerns for the benefit of their capitalist friends, specifically the Adani conglomerate that is the mine developer and operator for RVUNL. Echoing similar concerns, Ms. Karat in her August 6 letter sought Mr. Yadav's intervention to 'reverse the destructive decision of the Chhattisgarh Forest department to give the green signal for the operationalisation of the Kente Extension Coal Project which requires the destruction of 1,742 hectares of dense forest land.' The approval follows the so-called inspection of the site by the Surguja District Forest Officer in June this year, she added. Ms. Karat further wrote that these projects were being taken up ignoring the opinions of the gram sabhas involved and the provisions of the Constitution and legal frameworks that made consent of the gram sabhas mandatory. 'Open cast mining affects a very large geographical area beyond the actual project. So even though human habitation in this specific area is negligible, many villages outside the area will be deeply affected. Earlier, more than 1,500 written objections from local communities were given to the government. But these have been ignored,' she wrote.
